I found this '57 buried in a garage in 2007, but the owner didnt know any history. A year later while thumbing through a binder of drag pictures at the Sacramento Autorama I found the B/W photo of the car going thru the lights at the Bakersfield March Meet in 1970. The car was run in G/MP at the time and was later run in D/GS with an injected smallblock. The car was from Turlock, CA and the owner/engine builder was Ed George and his wife Pat did the driving. When I found the car it had a 5.86 geared Olds rear end and US Indy slots all around. Found out the hard way that the 15x4 front wheels are only .50" - .60" thick in the bead area...one cracked on the way to a show, not sure if I like the new E.T's or not.
In the IHRA Modified Eliminator video there is nothing better than the "dry hops" they do after the bleach box as they make their way up to the line.
Yeah, really cool! Unfortunately, that is a thing of the past. In the name of 'progress', 99.9% of the cars nowadays (and for years now) just roll up to the start line after the burnout. Fellas, when I clicked on this thread to view it, my dad called me on the phone and I told him about this thread! He asked me to ask some of you fellas if ya'll had ever heard of a 1955 chevrolet called "Trouble" and the car was blue in color and was driven by a fella by the name of Tom Hobbs? Here's another only in gold and maybe the second most recognized. I know the owner was Albert Clark and if I remember correctly, Don Koonce at the tiller.
Maybe somebody can give me a hand here. There was a Modified Eliminator racer in the 70's named Paul something who ran a Green 69 Camaro, and then a green Opel GT called "Brass Tacks". Might have even held a record with the Opel. He ran at Island a lot but also think he ran at Maple Grove. I know he was from Pennsylvania. Any guesses?
The gold Corvette was David Surles from NC. Mercure drove the car during the '77 season due to a bit of trouble that Surles had with Tony Christian and NHRA. The Albert Clark cars were driven by Don Coonce. Bob Rice
That great sound was because of small cubic inch engines backed by a heavy flywheel. Notice how when the engines were revved several times it would take a little while for the RPMs to come back down. The heavy flywheels were needed to keep the RPMs up on the launch. That was the only way to keep the engines from bogging off the starting line. I sure do miss the sound of a screaming small block racecar with a 4-speed.
Yeah, I really miss that era too. I knew those small-inch Modified cars had heavy flywheels but didn't know it contributed to the "cool" sound. Thanks for filling me in. Pete
