    There's a picture of one floating around somewhere. It was rod run pics or a parade, I've slept since I saw it so I cannot remember. Anyway, someone beat you to it. Cute idea, though.

  8. This guy was at the 08 Goodguys in DesMoines, I believe it was built out of a 56-57 Chev. Definately a big hit with the kids.

  14. I believe that Mater is based off a mid to late fiftys Dodge truck, not an International> But I could be wrong. Mike

  17. This old International is sitting on Main Street, Galena, Ks (near Joplin) at
    an old service station renovated as a coffee shop and tourist stop. The
    film people claim it was their "inspiration" truck. It was parked out in a
    field by the previous owner, then ended up with the present folks. It
    strikes me as more of a salvage yard boom truck than an actual tow truck...
    but what the heck. Maybe it was the thing they used.

    A group of writers and whoever came to this area, rented cars, and
    drove all around to get a feel for the real Route 66 and things found
    along it....to give a realistic feel to the movie.

  18. They ran the truck in a Rt 66 parade in 2007.....it doesn't run the best.
    Was either overheating or dying out on them.

    Here's the refurbished service station in Galena....operated by 4 women.

    Actually Mater is based on chevy 1 ton truck..early mid 70's. Well, that is what they started with, a 1 ton duallly. They stripped it, shortened, cut, welded, etc until the chassis was right. The body is some steel sheets to make the bed and the cab/front end is just molded ABS plastic!! It is based on Pixars concept of what they wanted the tow truck to look like. Eddie Paulk built the actual Mater truck that was used for display/promotion...a write up was done, including pics, in the #18 Nov 2006 issue of 'ol skool rods. pages 86--89

    heh. I bought a 64 Wildcat shell to sort out some possible interference issues. When the previous owner hauled it back away, the kids across the street saw it and were jumping up and down screaming "Mater! Mater!". yup, all rusty, wouldn't start - beat up to hell.

    Mater was IH. '57 was a model change year. They went to the A-series in 57. 58 was the same body, headlight and grill style and changed in 59 that ran to 60. So Mater was an A series IH. It had the single headlights in 59 it was changed to two per side.

    The A series had a very unique bonus load bed for 57 and not 58. Bonus Load was the IH version of the Fleetside bed of GM, however it's own design. 59 and 60 was a differnt bed that lasted until 68.

    Here is my 60 Travelette 3 door "Nacho";
