potvin supercharged lincoln 430

I put this in my cl***ified ad as a joke but I just think it's bad***. Anybody ever run one of these Potvin 6-71 setups? I talked to the guys at Moon and they apparently still make em. One of the many cool things not in the catalog....

I thought Potvin setups were only available for Chrysler, Olds, and SBC...

 

I know of at least two lincolns with Potvins. I guess that doesn't mean there was a kit for it but at least guys could make them. I'm not sure that I see the advantage of a front mount blower unless you were looking for clearance in a streamliner or something?

Is the Lincoln 430 the same engine family as the Edsel E-400? Or, more specifically, will the Eddy manifold he has fit an Edsel?

True, thanks Bob K. This is the one from Metalshapes. It is getting an overhaul right now so maybe I'll repost it when it is done... it is a small block ford cross ram weber set up with dortello 40's and plumbed for nitrous. It really needs to be on a car!

 

I also found my meteor fuel injectors new in the box somewhere. So I'll let you know if I can make the injection work or not. They are pretty neat and hopefully streetable.

It is in it's own family:

'58 Merc 383
'58 Edsel 410 (not to be confused with the later Merc 410)
'58-60 T-bird 430
'58-65 Lincoln 430
'66-7 Lincoln 462

Some times called the MEL engine (Merc/Edsel/Linc).

A few parts interchange with other Ford engines, as do a few design characteristics, but it is it's own family.

 

I had a 58 Ranchero with a (Lincoln?) 430 "Super Marauder" with tri-carbs exactly like the one on this site...!

That thing was "Scarey Fast" and the damn rearend was always trying to p*** me...!

I saw an aircleaner for the "Super Marauder" sell over $6,000 on ebay about a year ago..., and I haven't seen another in real life since I sold mine in 1978...!

I could stare at that engine all day..., it was truely a piece of art...!!

 

scooby, Wowza! I know a guy who has one of those exact, damn thing is brand new in box and never ever used. Problem is, it would probably take more than $300 to pry it from his hands. He was looking for more info on them too. Got any more info about them to tell us?

 

51leadsled, Are ya talkin about the Meteor Injection? If so, I just found six new in the box that I'm supposed to get this week. You are right. They aren't cheap but they are kinda cool. I'm workin with Linder Injection on them right now. They were made by the SAATY company out of Rhode Island in the 1940's as an aftermarket piece. This model is called the 100. It's a pretty slick little design. Tom Culbertson found a three page write up and test in one of the little books that he is going to get to me this week. Can't wait to learn more. They were a universal design to replace any two barrel carb.

 

would anyone happen to have a diagram or something similar on the lay out and plumbing of the blower set up on a car like the first one shown. front mounted?

alot of them just look like a normal roots style blower with carbs on one side and some big piping coming into the other.

id asume you just take a roots blower, stick it in there side ways, through on some side drafts, fab a bottom blower manifold and motor side manifold and run the piping to each.

the only thing i cant realy ever see is how its driven, crank drivin from the rear?

Potvin had two different setups for their front-driven blowers. A chain setup and a gear setup. You would not be able to copy either design easily, it would be a lot of work.

FWIW, your blower drive ratio is VERY limited with a Potvin. You have NOTHING like the range enabled by the use of top and bottom drive pulleys.

 

Is it really true that Mooneyes still produce these setups??? I'm liking the idea of putting one on my bantam altered but i dont know if anyone still makes them or how they worked in enough detail to make my own setup.
Any further information will be much appreciated. Knowledge of such setups is extremely thin on thgorund here in the UK so any help will be greatly valued

Potvin's drive system was similar to that used on some pre-WWII cars, such as Mercedes race cars, which used crank driven superchargers. Initially chain driven at crank speed, they were eventually driven with gears, which allowed a limited amount of Boost adjustment.

Initially, they were designed for Chrysler, Dodge, and DeSoto hemis, all Oldsmobile V8s, and SB Chevrolet V8s. This was in 1957. The kits sold for $220.00, and included everything except the inlet side of the blower setup. It was up to the user to design an inlet mount for the induction of his choice - carbs or injection. Eventually other engines were brought into the fold.

The most difficult part of duplicating the Potvin drive would be the Gear housing and gears. Everything else is pretty basic, as shown in the kit picture below. I do believe that Moon is selling kits, but I have no idea how complete they are. All pictures are from HRM in the 50's and 60's.

The two guys in the one picture are Dode Martin and Jim Nelson of Dragmaster with a twin engine Potvin setup that shared a common plenum for the injection.

what the hell is that from??? SnoDawg, I just scored a complete Latham (intake, blower, carbs, linkage, air cleaners, belt, manuals, offset distributor, etc for an FE for the shoebox)

 

Dude you are the Latham King!! As far as the Vari Vent carb goes I havent a clue. I did a search and it was supposed to be one of those super efficent high mileage carbs from the 70s. I havent been able to find much more info tho. I am tempted to try it out on something.

Ya might try Hamber ****ster. He's a carb guru and I think he has something real similar to that if I'm remembering correctly. I've seen some stuff like that in the little books from the 50's too.

 

I will have to give him a PM. I see some holly influneces in the design. Was toying with pulling it apart to see how it works it has a variable venturi setup as far as I can tell. I figured it was worth 40 bucks just for the weirdness factor.
