    ok

me and a buddy of mine were talking about cars as investments/ liquidity
forget about ANY fiberglass re pops.........
I am talking real steel here and we will leave out Auburns, Lincoln Zephyr, Dusenberg, Cords, Rolls, etc

I told him that I thought the most coveted / easiest to move car would be the
    3 window '32 coupe
    '41 Willys
after that would be the 5 Window
after that would be the '40 Ford Deluxe Coupe
    then the
    '36 3 window
    '36 5 window
    '35 3 Window
    '35 5 window

then it just kinda breaks down.........

but I would be interested to see what the community thinks......

I am sure I left out a lot - I am just looking through my own little wish list

and we will exclude Cobras, Corvettes, T Birds, Tri Five Chevys - all these are gonna always be wanted but are not what I am talking about.......

I'm not sure I'm following you here.
You may say a deuce 3W is at the top, but you are going to pay X amount of dollars for one, and while it will hold it's value, it may not appreciate in any real dramatic way. It will creep up in value, but will not be anything you are going to retire on.
A few years ago a guy had a 3W deuce body for sale at Pomona and I think he wanted $35K for it. I'm not to sure it would be worth a whole lot more today. And, I'm not sure that it sold at all.
Now, if you're talking about a 3W that you bought for $400 in 1964, then, sure...you will do very well, but you aren't going to become filthy rich.

    A better question might be:
If I were purchase a certain car today for investment purposes, which car would it be?

Sounds like you set up your own list , thinking it would be similar to others. People like car's are as varied as the colors in the big box of crayons...

If I go buy a 32 will people bow down on the side's of the road and blow me kisses?...I hope not...

I don't think 3w's are good investments...I distinctly remember losing $40k when I sold it.

You don't lose money til you sell. :D

Where is that car anyway? I guess it's holed up in a warehouse somewhere?

There's a huge difference between my list of "desirables" and my list of "investments"... you are mixing "pecking order" with "investment potential"...two totally different animals.

  10. Now Larry. Don't say you lost 40 K on that 3 window. You know that you have got that much worth in praise and kudos here on the Hamb for a job well done. Let's keep things in perspective.

I'd like to see what statistical model you used. I can't believe '32 MOPARs aren't right at the top or at least second. this comes as a complete shock to me.

I think we could add toyota's to the list since they are the biggest car seller in the U.S. as of yesterday...

    Sad, Sad, Sad... I think I will go cry now.....excuse me...................:D

I think the 32 roadster would be near the top of the list. Things do change as the years go by however. Around 20 years ago I traded a 32 3 window body for 32 roadster body, both about the same condition. This was before you could buy steel reproductions. Back at that time I paid $500 for the 32 3 window body so I got into a 32 roadster body on the cheap.

I think the days of huge increases in values are ending. As someone allready said here most old cars are not good monetary investments anymore. Steve

I don't think that a list for investment/liquidity can be the same. Your list covers liquidity but I question investment.

I like Mozooma's spin on it. It would be interesting to get a list that people think would be the best investment for the future. I would doubt that anything from '32 to '34 would make the list. I would look for the ugly step-sisters, like the '37 and '38 Fords. '35's were there a few years back but don't see them much cheaper than '36's now.

I don't think that the orphans would make it. The masses seem to follow Fords and Chevys. 5 or 10 years back it would have been Mopars; hindsight it easier.

Thanks for letting me hi-jack your thread. ;)

Especially rusted-out hulls of cars/trucks. The way I see it general competency is waning with the succeeding generations and before you know it there won't be anybody around capable of utilizing this old tin. The the r@+ rod scene is a perfect example of this.

I guess I am confusing with that initial post....
desirability is total opinion........I would love to have a Cobra- but know I will NEVER have one......
I am not really concerned with what is going to go up in value either.......
    I am thinking of OK
I am gonna pay $10K for a car..............
then 3 years from now - OH MAN - I need to get some quick cash....

if I am stuck with a 1960 Comet and needed $$$ really quick - I am gonna not be able to move that car as fast as a 1932 Roadster

    am I confusing this further?

anyway - thanks for helping this thread along - so I am interested to hear others lists

These days the only way your going to move anything is you give it away.

Model A's. Relatively cheap to buy and easy to find a market for.

I have 2 on his list. But I would rather have a chopped 34 3 window more than the ones I have.

Since we are not millionaires, all this really doesn't apply to any of us.
We have what we can afford and that's our reality..........
