Projects 59 El Camino.. Build Pics

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by J.Fishbeck, Jan 2, 2010.

  1. The driveline is together, and surprise.. I found more rust! Shocking.

I guess the drivers side needed to prove, its just as bad as the passengers side

  2. On todays episode of, "Weld, Grind & Repeat" ..

  3. Today was the last day of rust repair... on the floors! A fellow hamb'er is selling me, both lower frt qtr patch repair panels. Nice timing, I have been looking for those & the lower rear qtr halves. I am going to have to "make the rear Impala qtrs fit" since they are different than the Elco & Wgns. I just learned that!

I put SEM "Rust Seal" on the floors to contain the rest of the rust on the floorboard

I need the lower "rear" valances also.. the passenger right side & the center, too! If anybody knows someone w/ a couple spares, I'd appreciate it!

  5. Shhh.. it can hear you! HaHaha.. It looked good when I checked it out, but I don't know whats lurking underneath there.

  6. yea both the '59 i had and my '60 had some rust under there. the window channels was rock solid but the channel under the stainless strip had holes and went into the cab.

  7. Before the rain started today, I was looking & poking around under there. Nothing is standing out, but that's why they call it lurking.

Hi J. i suppose this is why you dont show up anymore on "the other" thread :D!
Nice project, i dont like 59 cars or wagons too much, but Elco's are just another story!
Tooooo nice a car not to like it. The Gold vs black plans makes my mouth water...honest!
Oh btw, i went for bags in the end as i found too little info on them cylinders.
But i know i can add them later to the bag set up for pullin standin 3s! :D :D
Sorry for the hijack, keep up the great work!
    Nick.

  10. A friend of mine 51 mercules, mentioned there was someone asking about the air cylinders. so thats what brought me to the HAMB. Started building the Elco, and been here ever since.

  11. Loving this.. I seen it on Bing images. I don't know whos it is!

  12. Today I was taking out the screws, that hold the top bed mldgs. The mldgs do need their share of attention. But, this is my new shop truck, so it will be used.. real good. So with that, I'm going to take the mldgs to Claremont to be straightened. Inexpensive, for decent work. I don't want to get upset when something happens. Now all the body mldgs, are going to Sihilling for a perfect finish.

I'm still looking for the center & passenger side lower valances for the rear, too..

  13. that my friend is computer generated i have seen this guys wrok before, preety cool.

  14. I agree..

  15. Earlier in the week, my Dad helped me get the door glass channels undone on the drivers side. Today I got the passenger side off. I cleaned them up, used some Rust-Seal & then painted em. I also put Rust-Seal on the pkg tray, which made the thin & badly pitted areas easier to see. It's easy enough to get to, it will be an easy fix on Sunday. GNRS tomorrow..

  16. I welded up where I had to make a relief cut on the floor board patch, so I made a mount I needed to make for one of the headlight buckets. It was one of those things, I just kept thinking of the way my Dad always says.. "it's just one less thing i have to do, now!"

  17. Removed all the brake lines & installed the new right rear E' brake cable. Scraping off the oil soaked dirt is always fun! I'm going to need new rear control arms bushings, I see. The Posi needs attention, also!

The danger that lurks from under... WwhhoooOO!

  18. Vintage44, Here's pictures of the tools. My Dad took the handles off. I wasn't paying attention when he was doing it. He had to use a screw driver, to keep the white plastic piece out of the way. The normal tool we use, wasn't pushing the clip out.

Taking the molding off the door, you have to remove the screws holding the felt piece. Do not destroy the felt, you'll need it for a pattern. My felt is actually gone, it's just the backing.
There's two screws to undo.. front & back
    [IMG]
the molding should lift fairly easy.. then undo these two screws
    [IMG]
    It should slip out now
    [IMG]
The felt backing was still attached to the molding, on the passenger side.

Then I carefully pried the backing off the molding.

I bought new switches for the head lights & 2spd wipers. Started on the dash. The wiring is a mess under the dash.. trailer brake systems usually spell trouble. And whoever was working on the brakes when this thing ran, was scary. They bubble gum welded the brake lines & rolled up an aux line they had going out back. Rolled like a tube of tooth paste! I won't even build a car w/ a single master cylinder. I don't know, that's just me!

  19. the energy suspension rear kit re uses the outer shells, so just burn out the rubber, clean and install......no pressing and you have urethane. i also did the front a arms in urethane also. the guy in whittier is Rene and his number is (562) 695-4848 for elco parts. also check the crossmember that the rear end torque arm bolts to, i've seen them crack around the arm or around the welds on the frame.

  20. Thanks again for the panels. Those bushings sound like they're going to smell lovely. I will check those mounts now, also! I appreciate that number, too!

is the aluminum on your dash stock or of an impala? billy

  22. It's actually '60 Impala dash trim.. Came w/ the vehicle, so I plan on keeping it on there. The piece to the right of the steering column is bent, I have a straight replacement piece on its way.

    That would be cool!

  29. No, the Enderle is waiting for me to find a 29 Roadster.. I'm looking to build a B/STR. Wouldn't that be cool though.. a Kinsler EFI would be righteous on the '59!
Here's the pump and all that.
