Last summer you may remember I slammed the car together for a little show/Party called the Hard Core Happening in Leroy, NY. Here is a picture of the car at the show with the HAMBs’ own supermodel Tony.

Since then progress has been really stalled until today. In the manufacturing world there is a saying “Time to shoot the engineer”, well today I shot him. And made the decision to get my *** in gear.
A little while back I recessed my new firewall to fit the Caddy motor. But yet I didn’t want to cut the firewall to make it obvious, wanted to retain the “VV” look of the stock firewall. So here is what I did, I apologize I didn’t take pictures so I will try to explain. I separated the spot welds that held the firewall to the cowl sides. Scribing vertical lines from the cowl side to the top of the firewall on the tray portion to the crotch where it makes the bend to the vertical. Now I scribed a line in the crotch connecting the previous lines. Cut along those lines and separated the firewall from the cowl. Now measure from the top cut down 1” and remove that material. Save the 1” strip that was just removed. Cut it in half and attach to the vertical sides where the cowl side spot welds were removed, extending the legs. You have just recessed the cowl 1”, return the firewall back to the cowl. Here are some after the fact pictures, hope you can understand what I did. Here is a shot, this firewall has been recessed about 1 1/4". following pictures show details of how to do.

The body has been removed from the frame for some time now with no progress at all. The frame was in very bad shape from being an old drag car. There was ****, coble welded everywhere on this frame. The X member had been hacked out, a model T rear cross member mounted upside down as a cross member tying the remains of the X to the main rails. A C-channel was added as a transmission cross member. Some nasty *** steel plates that, kind of completed the X member on the front legs. There was a very badly installed 4 link installed on a GM 10 bolt rear, the links were rigid , no adjustment. I cut everything out leaving only the rear legs of the original X member. Removed the rear 34 member and added an “A” rear member with an “A” spring on the 36 rear axle. With the purchase of 2 more 34 frames I am now putting the X member back in place except, I cannot use the trans saddle on account of the 5 speed going in there. Today I tacked everything in place and mounted the motor and trans to determine my new transmission cross member. Also to compensate for the firewall that was moved back 1” the entire X has been moved back the same 1” to maintain stock pedal geometry.
Here in this shot you can see some of the nastyness that was my frame. The 1” x 1” structure that is seen here is actually the subfloor that was welded to the frame and the floor was just more flat sheet metal, talk about oil-canning.

Here is the new X in mock up.

I did some quick tacks to hold it all together, Later it will be placed on my budies frame table and final welded when I get to that point. Now I got to drop my motor and ****** in place to determine the location of the new transmission cross member.

Well that is where I left it for tonight, back to it tomorrow. I am kind of stuck waiting for my new axle from OKIE Joe until I can proceed much further. Need the axle to determine the final rake before I place the transmission cross member.

Where did you get the adaptor from the closed driveline to 5 spd trans and what is the trans out of?

Trans is out of a S-10 4WD. Guess I am gonna find out if a T5 can hold up to a 331 Cadillac.
