Ok, I've been wanting to start this thread for a while, and did a search and came up short... Can you guys show me some odd or unusual suspension set ups? The three that stick in my head are the rear springs on my 18-22 Dodge Bros frame they're 3/4 eliptics... 1/4 eleptics on top attached to the rails, and semi eleptics attached to them (with a shackle and a solid mount) The other two are the spring set ups on early Willys Overlands (looks kind of like 2 1/4 eleptics on each end, angled like a triangle... And then the knee action set up on the Master Deluxe Chevies... Does anyone have any others they've seen? Pics?
Built it in 65 still running today rear end was 44'' four link bars >same as used on his Traveler B/Gas car>the front suspension was his ;i never saw it used except on show cars all the parts came from Chuck Finders shop installed per his instructions hooked hard
Wow, this is the only safe way to drive it, layed out/partially inflated with the bags like that they'll eat themselves up from the inside out. Very poor execution of a cantilever bag set up. Hope they keep thier hands off the Viper's suspension before they hurt someone.
Yah, I don't think this is the finished product, a work in progress. Just posted it because it's "odd and unusual", which is what the OP asked for.
using the track bar like this airbag setup does;the frame will be centered in only one position&will steer itself as frame travels up&down....... ask me how i know look at my suspension >it hooked hard but not straight until i used a chain to limit travel threir setup better with watts type linkage
This picture is not very good but if you look you can see a crossmember just behind the radiator and under that there is a plate that connects to the radius rods. Between the crossmember and the plate are airbags. This was at Paso in '07.
I don't have a picture (scan) with me (in Iraq) but there is a cover car from an early/mid 1960's Popular Hot Rodding Magazine of a sweet little yellow T-bucket, root beer metallic color frame that had a torsion bar front with the bars hidden inside the 2x4 fabbed frame, it was really well executed and the thing that grabs your eye is the nakedness of the front without the traverse front spring. If I remember right it is from 64 or 65 and I think it might of even had a torsion bar set-up for the rear? I'm subscribing and I'll be back in the world of the big PX late March I'll post it then! Stand by Over: Hooah!
Why is that little voice in my head saying 'we are going to see some real nightmares posted on this thread'???
Bingo - that thought was just going through my head - great minds.... but I had Dennis Varni's 1992? AMBR winning '29 hiboy in mind....not traditional but the front suspension is really clean with the torsion bars hidden inside the frame rails.
