Waterjet cut diamonds in my I-beam axle saturday!

  1. He could just stuff dryer sheets into each hole. That should relieve any stress caused by the acute angles in the diamond shaped holes. There, problem solved.

  2. lets do an FEA test on solidworks
who has a dropped i beam axle drawn up as a SLD PRT
i'll run it and give you the results with no hole, hole, diamond hole
that will settle the issue... maybe

I'm betting that even after all this, (8 pages) he's still going to run it. I have no opinion either way, although holes in things (well some things anyway) look cool, they aren't for me. I would be interested in how it fairs however.

You know Aircraft windows were not always rounded, and sometimes (thank God) we learn from our past mistakes

1954: 'Metal fatigue' caused Comet crashes
"In tests on another Comet aircraft, Sir Lionel added, the investigators had found that up to 70% of the aircraft's ultimate stress under pressure was concentrated on the corners of the aircraft's windows.
Sir Lionel said the findings of the investigation would lead to a general improvement in the safety of passenger air travel. "It will perhaps be some consolation to the relatives of those who lost their lives to feel that good may come out of evil in this way," he added."

Talk to an Engineer before you hang the thing on the wall. Could be just fine for all we know.
