Won't need reverse unless you do burnouts across the starting line and need
to back up. That was not the usual procedure back in the '60s. Also, injectors
like Hilborns require a high pressure belt or cam driven pump. Moon tank with
hand pump was used for multiple carbs. Even their blown set-up had carbs.
Just freshen that puppy up and get it to the HAMB drags. New belts, tires &
other safety goodies would be understood. Also, I'm guessing the car was run
on alcohol and maybe a little pop if it had no radiator. Gas motors get hot in a
    hurry. Love it!!

Henry said that it had a 2gal. tank on the front of it, but didn't know what kind it was and looks like a moon w/3 bar cap w/moon mounts to me?

Question is, would that be to small for any reason?

Like you must drive these down and back from the end of the track?
Our track don't allow tow, chase cars or rtvs.

A 2 gal. Moon tank is what was on it, like the one pictured..That will be fine. Remember we talked, you may want to fit a starter to the car for self starts. You don't plan on running it for an hour so the small tank should be fine. Oh yeah, right on with finding the intake!!!! Call me about the injection part of it. Todd.

  12. I would talk to the track manager about allowing you to use a chase car. You really dont want to drive it back to the pits.
Modern bracket rails have radiators and electric pumps, but none of us would like to see your comp coupe "modernized" with that kind of crap.

HAMB and a thread like this is fantastic for someone like me who would like to be involved in nostalgia racing...but either:

    1. Don't have the money
    2. Don't have skills to build
    3. Don't have cojones to drive !!!

Am also interested in this thread since car (apparently) was from Austin MN and I am from Albert Lea.

Hope this thread continues until we can see a video clip of tires burning-up the asphalt.

    thanks
    Tom

Thanks For the break down sheets, big Help! Have the #s I want: 2-#8s, 2-#12s 1-#9 and 1-#11 for side shift type. Can you tell us what year this tranny is, in this car?

    (Rich Venza)
I'm sure It'll be ok at my home track (Sabin or Interstate Dragway) for hot rod drags. But I don't want to tow 1/2 way cross the county and be turned away! Not going to make modern changes to this car! I'll run outlaw first, before killing the history of this car to meet today rules! Cackelfest type or Nostalgia style racing only! If they want to see it run.

    Tom (TomJac)
Your all welcome to be on our team! This is a team (HAMB) built so far, until it gets STUPID! I like everyones input and its been great so far!
Our plans are to finish this car as is was raced back in the day.

    (holeshot)
29COUPE... He sold the car to me (trksmth) But he is still involved and will get to drive with us! We have a Hilborn injection 327 that we could run but only as a back up! I'm looking at a blown sbc, with a Keith Back magnesiun blowner, total old school and so cool, ready to go, but I'll only run this car the way it was! This is a historic car! I will not let the H.A.M.B. down on this. If I wanted to go fast I'd build something else! I'm not trying to be an ass. This car must be saved!

Like it or not, we (the HAMBers) have so far found all the right parts that they run! We are not going to go any other way, until its done! So far we have
    The right valve covers,
    the right intake w/after burner!
the right block and a line on the pistons, cam, cank and I'll check with Henry on the heads.
    Thanks everybody!
    Mike

This story just keeps getting better and better!

Would I be rude to ask how much a mid 60 dragster would sell for?

It looks like from the pics it was blown gas with carbs. If you don't want to run water, (which I wouldn't even on gas), I'd run blown alky with the carbs. Or injected alky. Easy and simple. Maybe not 100% original and correct but would be fast and cheap for now. Lippy

  19. Have fun with it. You have a jewel !

    Thanks for sharing.

Stop.........Think.........rethink and keep it as it was.

Have some 16" Halibrand magnesium wheels that would look really kool on it.

    Best to ya V

I knew this was going to come up, his reserve was $10,000.

The high bidder bid $5,000, trying to see where the reserve was.

But we'll never know on this one! The bid was ended at $3150.

I heard about this car before he listed it. A guy called for a tranny and said he knew of a old drag car with a '32 body on it, then he said three times that it was a piece of sh*t! so I past on asking anymore.

The next morning as always (road trip rod) sent me a link to this car and told me that this is the one, I was told about.
I fell in love with it and dropped everything and started to call everybody to try to swing this deal

Now, I knew from the pics, where it was and that I had met Jay before, just once.

So I drove over there, talked to Jay and we had a lot in common. He was a racer in the past. He had the love for it. He just wanted to run this thing down the track in Sabin!

As we talked, I offered to let him run it, if he sold it to me. He wanted to keep the car local, than he agreed.

I will not give out the price! Sorry, it does not matter! But now you know the rest of the story.

Ya, I'd like to run it blown and injected, but we just picked up the Man-a-fre intake w/carbs and after burner injection.

Thats the way it was raced and will be the way we'll race it!

The blower and six carbs was for show only, NEVER raced that way.

We want to preserve the race history of the car. I don't give a dam about show sh*t. thats just me and nothing will be painted on it!

    Lippy,
I'd love to run alcohol! But I hope we'll be able to keep it cool on gas? if we can find alky jets I'll switch.

    Mike

  22. I run my Fiat on race gas, and I don't run a water pump, just the block full of water. I can make a pass no problem. I gets about 220 degrees. We push it down the return road with an atv. I don't know if I could drive it back due to the heat. I may try it at the Hunnert Car Heads Up May 8th to see how hot it gets. It is a pain in the ass push starting it and not having a radiator, but it is worth the hassle. No one ever sees push start cars race anymore.

So true and thats the way they did it! No battery, no starter, just a magneto, push start and go like hell! Light weight too. Them guys ruled!
I'd like to have it ready by May 8th, so check with me, before you go!

  24. If you can find spindle mounts, I would use them, but only if they were originally used on the car. Rear brakes are fine, and if you are concerned, use a chute. I run rear disc brakes only and the chute is for show until I replace it with a usable one.
Ask Guffey if he has some spindle mounts.

Your right, I'll try and check to see what they ran for front rims.

The rear brakes still work and feel great sitting there. But they are drums.
It was said it had a chute, while racing and I have a couple old ones, so it will get one.

OK, talked to Henry today and he said they raced it with the 13" rims and tires that are on it!
So we are going to leave them on it.

He also said that they ran a motorcycle battery, witch we still have.

He thinks they ran a Mallory Ignition

Now help us with this, the heads they ran, he said had two points on them instead of the single point ones on the front castings (he said the big valved ones)?
And they were ported and polished.
So, I have not seen any like them and let me know if anybody has some!

Also said, they ran a Mickey Thompson crank kit w/rods and bal. assembly.
So we need to find these parts if we can!

    Thanks again Henry!

Mike, sounds like it had 2.02 intake (double-hump) heads. 300 hp 1.94 intake heads were double-hump also. Lippy
