As many of you know I've been working on a trade for May Cause Dangerous. At one point this coupe was part of the possible trade deal, but is no longer in the mix. The owner is the same guy who owns the '60 Buick I posted before that spurred so many opinions.

Well, he may be a glutton for punishment because he wants to know what you guys think of this coupe. He's a HAMBer but doesn't know how to post pics.

To preface; I don't say he's a glutton for punishment because the car ****s, but because I know how brutal the HAMB can be on cars that don't fit "our specific collective taste." In fact, I see potential in it even though I would have just had to sell it to pay bills. No, it's not the ultimate "traditional" "period perfect" late '40s hot rod - it has more of a mid-sixties bent. In the big picture of hot rodding it's a pretty universally appealing car.

My opinions: If I'd have traded for it, and kept it, I'd lose the wood dash, tilt column and wheel, ratchet shifter and 4-link front. I'd change to bias plys with painted 16" Ford steelies, add split wishbones all around (or chrome hairpins to keep a '60s theme) and paint it solid navy or burgundy with a black motor. I'm on the fence about the So-Cal front discs.

Again, I am NOT trading for this car. He just wants to know what you guys think about it because he read the thread about the '60 Buick.

    Have at it...

I don't really see anything wrong with it, but I do prefer the more traditional style. There's just a few things that could be changed easily to remedy that though!!

That's really not a bad looking car other than the dash and it needs some bias plys.

Killer nailhead! And I agree with you about the tilt column, dash and wheels. Put on some bias plys on some '40 steeles and you'll have yourself a nice hot rod. This one does have more potential than the '60

Basically what you said Kirk. It would be cool with the mods you listed, and even cooler if the 4 bars got swapped out to hairpins. Everything it needs basically is cosmetic. The engine and body are cool. Stance is nice too.

Heck, just get rid of the flames and paint all the green things white or black, put in a metal dash and that would be a huge step forward.

  7. I too, am not a four-bar fan...But I dig the nailhead!!!

I also think that the radials hurt the look of this car very much...

Love the chop and stance, love the motor, not too big on the color choices/scheme, but that thing looks like a whole lot of fun to me.

wouldnt take much to make it more traditional. over all not a bad car. wheel and tires, some changes to the interior would make a big difference without alot of effort.

The nailhead is sweet, but the green Stromburgs are killing me. I liked it better with the stacks then the louvered aircleaners myself. The wheels and tires could be swapped out easily. Cant go wrong with 16s and bias-plys. Not feeling the 4-link, and Im guessing it probably has coil-overs.... The tube axle...... Lets move on. The interior, the wood dash, billet column drop, tilt column, steering wheel- Gotta go. I like the seat though. A few changes overall, and it wouldnt be a bad looking ride. Even a simple wheel and tire change would make a huge difference. You asked for opinions, that was mine.

Non metallic burgandy, black 40 wheels w/ Merc caps, ribbed rings and black wall bias big and littles, red engine, subtle red pin stripes, 32 ford truck dash, and hair pins. Other that that cosmetic ****, It's a pretty nice start to a trad. hot rod. Todd.

Typically cars like this aren't worthwhile. Here's my rationale:

The biggest issue with this car is that it doesn't suit our (ie traditional rod and kustom enthusiasts) taste. It's not an ugly car, it's just not our flavor. That doesn't mean it's not worth good money, in fact, quite the opposite. Someone who doesn't really know a lot about cars but wants a generally good looking car to take to cruise nights and impress people who are even more ignorant to cl***ic automotive styling would love a car like this. Little kids will see the flames and go "ooooooo". Like rac****s, people are attracted to shiny objects, so this one's a winner. But if you want to do better than that you'll need to do some work. This looks like a real high quality, well built automobile. No rat rod here. So what winds up happening is you get a car for essentially street rod value, then drop a load of money to take perfectly good components off the vehicle, reupholster perfectly good interior, and redo perfectly good paint to get the car to look the way you want. Now you're even further into the car money-wise, but the only thing that has really changed is the style. It's not worth much more than when you started.

Unless you're getting it at a bargain ba*****t price, I vote no.

It is what it is ! ! I think it is a really good looking car (as built).
Everyone has their own tastes and styles. Would I make changes ? Hell yes. I would bet that everyone that looks at the car would have different ideas. This is what makes the custom
world go 'round. Do your build your way and enjoy the ride.

De-Rod the interior and I would be proud to have it in my garage. Like I always say "We dont all drive Cadillacs for a reason."

looks like a nice car. I'd change the dash column and wheels to suit my taste. I like 5 spokes and blackwalls on my HOT RODs.

Damn...there are so many people on the HAMB now, that it's gotten to the point where we can't 'dis' cars anymore without finding out later on that they are on here watching...
Personally, I only like to bash people behind their backs :)

The dash, steering wheel and column seem out of place. Other than that, it's a nice car.

Ha ha! Actually his feelings weren't hurt by the other thread because he says he likes the car no matter what others think. To me that's real hot rodding.

Besides, opinions are like ***holes - we should share them whenever we get the opportunity. Wait. No.

It needs more swap meet charm and less mail order indifference.

  20. I like it!!...lose the radials....Tilt?? Might be needed to drive it comfortably? Overall, not bad at all..just a few minor changes.

    Murph:cool:

  21. Looks like a good driver to me. I'm not a fan of wood dashes but I don't see anything that looks like it wasn't well built.

I'd change the dash to something like a '32 dash with SW gauges, go with regular under-ch***is exhaust, make the carbs look "natural" again, take the flames off, add body colored full fenders to hide all the four-bar underpinnings, and swap the wheels and tires for something a little more cl***ic.... maybe chrome reverse with blackwall bias-plys....

As mentioned earlier, you could easily spend a bunch of money on that thing getting all the yuckiness out. I hate tilt columns and four bar suspensions, too...

  23. the rachet shifter is the ugliest piece on the car, id get rid of the paint job for something a little less gay.
hairpins would look nicer and ditch the radials.
i guess pretty much everthing thats already been said.
hehe, opinions are like ***holes, some just stink more than others. LOL.

  24. The dash and shifter have to go and I'm not crazy about the interior either. Trade out the 4 bar for hairpins or radius rods and chrome reverse and WWWs, with cheaters on the back and a solid color. The motor and stance is great. It's a good foundation to start with for sure. My 2 cents!

The only thing that I can't take is the "slime-green" engine and carbs.

  28. Do you plan on keeping it, or flipping it?
Keeping it will mean spending some green backs.
Flipping it as is might be the better path.
