Why are car guys so arrogant ?

  1. I guess it's a pet peeve of mine but when reading threads on here there are always a bunch of guys who throw out answers to questions that are exactly the same as 10 previous answers and act like they were the first ones to ever think of that. It's obvious they never read the whole thread and sometimes even didn't bother to read the original question completely. What brought this on was a recent post where a guy is asking how to get BOLTS out of a blind hole with no access to the nuts and 5 guys have told him to split the nuts.. It's like they think the rest of us are all *****s and the only opinion that matters is theirs even if 20 guys have posted before they did with exactly the same advice. Lots of times the original guys question has been answered 5 pages ago & he's already moved on meanwhile there's still guys telling him how to fix it... Being a mechanic all my life I guess it goes back to the way of thinking that when there's a problem it's up to me and only me to figure it out. But if these guys would just take a minute to read the responses they would realize the problem has been solved. Just ranting & it will probably get deleted but maybe I'll at least get a few answers before that happens.

    I don't think that it's car-guy arrogance that's really bothering you, I think it's message-board laziness.

That being said, if ten guys say "I think your doohicky is loose," and only one guy says "your canoodler valve is too tight," that lets me know what to check first. I, for one, appreciate multiple responses, even if several are redundant.

I was gonna say the say thing as Bigcheese, but wasn't sure I should post - lest I tick you off with my "arrogance". ;-)

  6. Home built road racer. Called a Jomar and built by a bunch of guys in Manchester NH in the 50s in the upstairs of a car dealership that's still in business. There were several versions built and they were later bought out by TVR in England. The pic was taken in 1959 at Daytona and the guy on the far right is my dad.

Well if some tech gotta as much attentions as the "spreader girl" that would be a vast improvement :D

I think in some cases its legit, you open a thread read the first post and if you know you answer..just what ya do.

Though yes sometimes ,there are those replies that come across ad "this way" is the only 'correct' way to do something..

Old guy in a Truck Garage way back when told me,," Theres 15 ways to change that starter, ya know which one is the right way ? " "the one that works for you "

  10. Perhaps because these people believe they are capable of "original thought" while in reality none of us are.

  11. Rant away.
I don't always bother reading the entire post but I don't care my answer is always the best one. :D
Far better to get it off your chest that to stew on it.

As has been posted btw LSR or Road Racer?

Majority rule. If 15 feels this is the way to go, and one says do it this way, you feel safer going with the 15. It gets outta hand sometimes. It's best when someone can expand on tech. issue rather than say, "me too".

  13. Scroll up... I already answered that question.. :p Check it out here http://www.jomar-cars.com/

As I already explained to Mr. selfrightousness, sometimes we don't work on 70's thru 80's vans and are not self proclamied junkyardmen, but we do try to help. And think if you can while posting there could be 10 posts being written at the same time, so all ten would pop up at the same time...

I know around here I refer to it as "Big Fish, little pond syndrome" There's always the guys that have to look in the know, even though you know they're in the know!!!! So ya just keep your mouth shut and let them be the cool one!!

Personally I would rather see 12 guys saying the same thing to (esp when asking for advice) then everybody saying something completely different.

The multiple response in the same light is just a bit more affirmation.

Often it is because some guy is repeating old wives tales with no first hand knowledge. It's not a vote but if you get 3 people with one solution and 1 with a different opinion, you know where to start.

Yeah ..BUT there is one slight issue there

In this day and age and the (mis )information Hiway,,there are so many who don't REALLY know. They read an inaccurate post ,that then makes its way around and before long ,,,,( get the picture )

If I need to know something and ask,,and get different answers I then have to sit and look ,,then if what was said makes sense,,and I can see "ok,yeah that works " then I can move forward..

There are many who are very new to the whole car thing,,yet in there overkill effort to be the cool car guy, just repeat whatever they have heard taking it as gospel without even knowing for sure if it is correct. You learn from doing and from mistakes

Arrogant ,You some type of cry baby .You must have maternal issues .Now all kidding aside ,Id feel better if I got the answer to my questions even if there are 15 of everybody saying the same thing .These people take the time to sit in front of there computer and reply .Which I appreciate .Sometimes even bad constructive even if its negative can be good ,I just figure instead of complaining about people's arrogance ,I thank them for taking the time to reply. Now go somewhere and cry.

Some of us are old hung over wore out *******s that can't type like the wind, and have to put our thought down before we loose the reason we are typing in the first place. LOL ****, I dunno why people are different. Some of this may be folks wanting to be able to be apart of this site. They get in a hurry, relax .......it's all good ....OMM, OMM,OMM

From a different prospective I see redundant answers as eagerness to help with a problem each of the duplicate posters have experienced first hand.

Why even worry about it?,, with 96,369 members it's going to continue. HRP

  27. Haha.. You got me. I guess my post did come across a little whiny. Here's what I meant.. Someone starts a post with the ***le "Elvis is dead" in big huge flashing neon letters. 12 pages later sure enough some ***** will pop in and say "sorry to interrupt but I just had to tell ya, Elvis is dead"..... :p

I worry less about redundant posts and folks not reading the entire thread, than I worry about the dude with the scary Oprah fetish who posts...

As long as a response is given, it's fine by me. If 15 guys say the same thing(whether or not previous solutions have been read) , this will usually be the correct answer. All input is appreciated by me. My 2c.
