We are going to retire soon and might relocate to a nice friendly area where I can drive most months and be in a street rod culture. We are rural people and prefer small towns. Looking for ideas and thinking Utah or NC ?

Any free advice on which State works best?

My earlier thread today got deleted because it got "political" so let's try harder.

Another thread about this popped up this morning. Check it out!!!

Southern Cali is the best but you'll spend your retirement savings in now time there.

You are pretty close to NC so don't be afraid to check out Charlotte area. We are all pretty nice guys that love old cars. Not the most or the best but it's growing and there are more race shops and speed shops anywhere in the country with the exception of Socal... maybe. We have Maxton for ECTA speed trials and pretty awesome weather. Cheap homes and nice people.

AZ has a climate to suit most. You dont have to live down south near Phoenix. Prescott area is nice and only a couple hrs from Phoenix. Little cooler in summer and not a super harsh short winter. Could be in Las Vegas or Cali in a few hours

I thought the Phoenix area was great...cruise nights any night of the week and a great bunch of HAMBers out there.

East Tn you can cruise the Smoky Mountains about 9 months of the year in an open roadster. Lots of car shows and plenty of hot rodding going on in Pigeon Forge

TX and Austin in general is pretty cool. It's a different kind of car culture though. In So-Cal you just see people riding around in their old cars, and you can see a ton of them in normal day to day traffic. In Texas I feel like i'm the only person that drives his classic day in day out no matter the weather.

There's a big car culture here... you just have to find it. So-Cal... it finds you.

    Just my opinion.

    I have California-envy. Real bad.

  14. i'll try not to get this thread locked, but if you don't want an overpriced area, nosey neighbors and a capital that wants to condemn your old car stay away from califonia. i'm looking elsewhere when i retire (15+ years) and i was born and raised here. a few people on here moved to utah/texas/arizona and like it.

    Hahahaha!!! That's pretty funny.

What's even funnier is that I came up with two different responses for the same question.

If you can stand the winters Iowa Isn't so bad..........no hot rod sinifer laws cheap registration and no inspections. Plus most everyone is friendly and would help you alongside the road.

I visited Prescott AZ last fall and WOW! Nice climate year around, with just enough winter to remind you there are four seasons. Lots of transplanted hotrodders from CA. and other states. Housing that was built to be car person friendly. Nice guys to be around. Now, if I can only sell my 5 acre spread?

I like Kansas, but have run into some unsavory characters out there. They still have seasons and there is plenty of open space. From my understanding, the laws are favorable. Just watch for guys in overalls and wearing straw hats.

My parents are car peeps and they winter in Florida and normally take their classic car AND it's their only car down there for 4 months. After spending some time in AZ recently I do believe the winter car action is stronger in AZ and I think I would prefer that over Florida. PLUS it is a short drive to SoCal for long weekends. My plan is to seriously check out AZ when that times comes.

To rent a place in a couple of different locations that you are thinking about would be the way to go......a few months here, then a few months there, a few months somewhere else, then decide.

I've heard great things about NC, but after going to the geneva area of Ohio (north east of cleveland, near the lake) there are tons of hot rods there and the laws and regs on street rods are pretty acceptable. The winters are pretty rough there, but the springs are ok, summers are spectacular, and the autumn is great with a sweatshirt/jacket or the heater on just a little-very beautiful scenery.

I retired 3 yrs ago and came back to OK. Cost of living is fairly low and I kind of knew the area. Other choices were any state without income taxes. (OK has them but housing/land was SO much below others, this is where I landed)

Prescot, AZ is the self proclaimed hot rod capital of the southwest maybe the US. Lots of quality hot rods, classics, drag and salt flat cars. Small town living at it's best.

I moved here about seven years ago from Salt Lake City, Utah and love it. Much better than UT. cause there is no SNOW! the laws a relaxed and not so biased.
There are so many "rods" here and there is a show and cruise every thursday. you cant beat the weather, its feb now and it was mid 70's today, perfect day to build your ride or cruise the one you have already built!

I do like Florida and there is no sales tax. This winter has sucked with cold weather and rain. And the summers can be extremely humid. But I haven't seen snow, there is usually a car show every day, and the winters are normally in the 70's. Here you are never more than an hour and a half from the ocean or gulf.
