"Weed" Chevrolet. I bet more than a few people did a double take when they saw that sign on the quarter panel, thinking perhaps it was a bogus name and the driver making it known he was a member of the "in crowd." For example, I remember seeing this on the back of one race car back then: "If you're not a head, you're behind." A "head", get it? Pete
Thanks for the replies! I am from the Richmond,VA area and will be back in June after a three and a half year military vacation. When I was home in Richmond in December for a funeral there was a plenty o snow! and my father said they have had plenty more! Plenty of snow here in Stuttgart Germany also, it snows here every day.I miss the Richmond dragway used to see Ronnie Sox run his Comet there in the 80's against the Asti Spumante car. Love this sight because you guy's seem to have been there when it all went down and would be a wealth of knowledge. Growing up I always hung around people who were a bit older than myself as I am 39 so my interest in vehicles would parallel that of this sight.I hope I can find out the color of the car before it was painted as I see his 68 was burgundy and white but from the one color picture of the 69 I can't tell if it is burgundy or red? and any way it could have been painted over. If I can find the dealer who sold it afterward I could do a title search.Sorry for such a long post! THANKS AGAIN!
While we're still (for a few minutes) on page '289.' here's one for the Ford guys ... See more @ ---> http://www.midcomustang.com/mustanghipo.shtml PS: Here's a recent Chevrolet-related story you may have missed ---> http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/14/automobiles/collectibles/14corvette.html
Just got this photo from an old jr. stock racer. Looks to be very early 1969. Thats part owner/driver Ken Nelson standing at the rear, back "when he still had hair" as he says. No idea where it was taken. -Dean
here's another obscure one...Edd Twigg's F/SA 340 Dart Swinger from Garrett Dodge in Akron, Ohio...check your entry lists, he's there...sorry 'bout the poor quality pics again, but hey...that's my MO...lol...CB
Steve. I see you had posted this picture on another HAMB site. I think this is my buddy Dave Christie. Sent him an email to confirm. Gary
I can help you with some pics and a little history of Ron's 69 SB car. Post coupe bench seat. I was there! Not sure of original color, but your trim tag should tell.. If I had to guess I would say it was red and the SB lettering design was applied to the factory color? Its understandable that Chesrown would not have had any sales info on the car as it came to the team via Oldsmobile racing/Smothers who wholly owned the car. It was "returned" to them after the SB program was discontinued (for every team except for Berejik)and it was, indeed, sold as a used car but I dont(cant) remeber where? Runs in my mind that it may have been sold from the Chesrown Dealership lot in columbus, rather than in Newark, where the team was based. BTW - what was the name of that college teacher of yours that says he raced at the same local track? I probably know him too!! PM me for some more info.
It just dawned on me while I was thinking about the Ron Garey car for "Newbie"--698531-- the pics here are a 1969 car not a 1970. Also a question for 67W30-- How long did Chesrown run their SB program? I know my car (Anderson Olds '69 W31 F/S) ran for two (2) seasons. It was then made ready for sale and sold with a warranty! It had 499 miles. The pic on page 90 of this thread shows the car at Capitol Raceway in 1969. Until next time.....Dave. P.S. The car today is VERY original, in outstanding condition, and has 10730 documented miles---I had it re-lettered as it appeared in 1969.
The SB team program was for just the 69 season only with exception of the Woodland-Andresen Berejik Olds team. The Berejik guys continued a SB team deal for the 70 season with their 70 442. There are lots of pix of that car on here earlier. Ron Garey prepped his G/SA 70 car for the 70 season and the 69 SB car was returned to it owners and I also believed it was sold as a used car with balance of warranty from the dealers used car lot.(my recollection - not necessarily fact about how it was disposed of). maybe one of the other team cars team members can shed some light on how the cars were disposed of? Like Jim Waible, Willard Wright, Pete Kost. Also yes it was Garey's 68 car that was wrecked and re-bodied, not the 69. PM or email me some more pix of your Anderson car for my olds photo file, please. Thanks, T.
it was a plain-jane all white '67 SS/IA 350/295... I think he won an NHRA world championship the next year with the '69 Nova...tossed in a few pics of the cars in his pit area...Bob R remembers whos Nova SS's these are, George Duff is one I believe...CB
And Dianna responded by taking one of those "car length naps" in the Eliminator final against Garey's W-31 Olds. Gary covered him at the 3/4 mark and coasted to victory!!
cb - i was referring to your pics of what you posted as Remlingers 70 car? I think the car in your pics is a 69, so it couldnt be the 70 W31 car that ended up with Jim Kinney. Nice pic of Warren's 65 Nova in your next post.
oops, sorry T...brain fart on my end...it is a '69, pics dated Jan 70...found a few more here...these were all taken just after they rolled it out of the paint booth from their paint shop, a few mile from Remliner if I recall correctly. also an old Olds pic for Keith B. and all the other good Olds boys out there...from Dragway 42 1968. and a pic of what I think is an ex-Mark Y car...Mark, how many cars/combos have you raced thru the years...35-40 ???...lol...I'd need a whole chapter in a book to put down the ones I remember...lol...CB
Yea Gary, I'm pretty sure it was Dave. Wish I could remember when I took that shot. It was certainly well after I sold my 56 Pontiac in 1970 and sometime during that really-fuzzy half-decade when I was hanging out with Skip Hamm (The Ned Bug), Doctor Jack Robinson (Lubick Olds) and my good friend Lee Sherman (assorted 65/66 full-size 283 Chevrolets). The funny thing is, I clearly recall the brief prelude to taking that image. Roaming the pits at Cecil I spotted Ronnie having a very-introspective moment. As I fumbled with the controls on my budget manual-focus Nikon he turned his head toward me and smiled ... then, as if to give me his permission to take the picture, he resumed his ever-so-cool pensive posture and I opened the shutter. He was a professional ... and a gentleman. http://www.ronniesox.com/NHRAarticle.html
Thought you guys might enjoy this blow by blow stick vs. automatic coverage in Island Dragway's Competition Copyright. This one is Olster vs. Stein. Hope it's readable.

That was at Cecil County? Wish I had an approximate date for that pic That is the first Dodge Colt built by Logghe and only run for a short time. It is beiing restored now by a collector in Nebraska. I went and saw it in November and was amazed how much was left of the original chassis and running gear. Thanks 67 w30, Here are some of the reason's I felt it could be his old car no.1 the car was traced back to ohio by the previous owner no.2 it is a 69 F85 W31 post car 4 speed with a black bench seat no.3 the car is manual steering and radio delete. no.4 the car had some form of strange old home made looking traction bar or link (previous owner took it off and neglected to tell me it existed until after the sale) however I did see it. no.5 the car is not red but burgundy according to the paint code(it has a decent paint job now but was painted some strange dark blue) no.6 the car has an off white color clearly visible under the 3 newer paint jobs but before the burgundy where there are chips in it at the lower rocker and on the hood which is where the car was painted for chesrown originally in 69. This car was made in lansing and everything boxed arms, fuel line mounting points, black plastic fender wells, ram air, hurst shifter and big balancer are all there. It does not have the original carb, distributor or transmission. It appears to have had a steering mounted tack at some point due to wear. The numbers matching block and big valve #5 heads have been totally rebuilt back to how to supertune the w machine book specs. The interior is about 85% of new and so as of yet I have not tried to find the build sheet there or over the gas tank and even if and when i find it would that be able to verify if it was the car? My teachers name was ERNIE WOLFE he used to run Chrysler and Dodge! DO YOU KNOW HIM 67 W30? I will contact you for those pics THANKS!
Gary, please tell Dave for me ... kudos for the great hair and his (as was Ronnie's) oh-so-very-cool demeanor. Methinks I took the pic in 1971 (maybe 72). Yes, I'm positive it was @ Cecil County and the feature of the day's program was a match race between Ronnie's Colt and Jenkin's Vega. I bet Bill would know the exact date. Alas, he's one of the uber-superstars who has not stopped by our humble little thread to say "Hi."
Heres a few pix. As you can see -- there is NO Chesrown lettering on the hood and the tach is mounted high on the dash - not on steering column. You certainly will not find a build sheet under gas tank or under seats or behind door panels. all those pieces were removed in order to remove sound deadener and insulation etc to shed weight. The black bench manual steering is correct - but the car was not raced with an Olds Hurst shifter. The one pix is in color so you can see what was there. I'reasonably certain that the white trim on hood and around windows was painted on top of the original car color and the logos/lettering was done in "chrome" stick-on material. I think there would need more "proof" to determine if IS or IS NOT the Garey SB car. good luck in your search! Sont remember the name Earl Wolfe! sorry (38 years is a long time -- LOL)
Steve, as far as I remember (and without going through my magazine collection to find the answer) the Pro Stock Hemi Colts didn't appear until 1973. For sure it wasn't 1971 because the first time I saw Dave Christie's name next to Jake King's (below Sox & Martin) was in 1972, the same year Da Grump debuted his new Vega. Regards, Pete
What kind of traction bars if any did he run also how was that tack mounted was it screwed in or just clamped? What I meant about the paint is around the very bottom of the car on the hood and around the roof rails as the paint is chipped you can see the many layers and one of those is the same creme or off white color as the ron garey car. It is one of the paints but not the primer that is showing where as the paint on the sides has some chips around the door and one on the side but show no signs of that creme color! Strange to say the least and unless someone can tell me or find out where it was sold this mystery may never be solved and what a shame that would be! I tried to E-Mail Ron Garey himself on a year old address is he still with us and if so even if I cannot contact him maybe someone here could! Once again MUCH THANKS!
Also I may be wrong about the shifter I think it just has the Hurst knob what did the shifter look like was it just a chrome shaft I beleive mine is just chrome and I just assumed because the knob was Hurst the whole shifter was.P.S all my other drag cars where th400's,350's and jetaways so I am no expert on 4-speeds also I have a set of "O" axle 4.66's and was wondering if running a M-20 would be a bad idea as my m-21 needs a rebuild. I realize 1st gear would tach out in about 20 feet but if I didn't throw a rod it would be impressive!
Note: Jerry McClanahan's grandson, Ryan, was runner up in Stock Eliminator at the 50th Winternationals last weekend. Ryan's father, Brian McClanahan, defending 2009 Division 7 Stock Eliminator Champion, bowed out of Stock Eliminator in round 5. It's a small circle within which we circulate. c
I just wanted to say I really like your avatar. I had an opportunity to buy a 67 442 with tri-power/4speed for very little money, $1800.00, once. Beautiful car, silver with black interior. This was in 1970, and I'm still kicking myself; I had just paid cash for a brand new 70 340 Dart and could'nt swing it. Now, there's no way I could get one. Butch/56sedandelivery. ALMOST 300 PAGES TO THE THREAD NOW, AMAZING!
