I really didn't intend to totally hijack the thread. Oh well. The blower is together, it's getting the injection together now that I'm learning on.
Very nice blower! But I was asking about the one going on his Jag engine, it is his thread after all.
Don, I guess you'll have to start posting on Kerry's thread. Also, I didn't see where you were asking for design or fabrication critiques. You're simply showing us what you are doing. I want thank you for all the engine building information you have provided through the many PM's I've sent you. Build on, brother.
Sorry about the hijack. Once I get started.... Now back to your regular programming and Don's spindles.
The blower set up is mocked up in wood but will not be transferred to aluminum for a while. Not in this months budget. Nice front end by the way. Which Harley wheels did you use? I also like your friction shocks. I wouldnt mind a better picture. Back to Dons spindles? Not a chance! Trying to help?Really?! I would never have known. Don
Kerry and Don Both JMP's and Patrick's dragsters Have fabricated spindles and motor cycle wheels, JMP's has been running for three years using 21" Harley Wheels with 3/4" Bearings pulling the front wheels on almost every run we even went to a track with a short run-off the car got into a slick dance and ran off the end dropping 6" onto a gravel road no damage to the wheels or spindles but bent the axle. My altered has fabbed spindles but I'm running hubs and Ansen slots. Here is a like http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=426459&highlight=feds+dragsters Kerry are you running 16"I would like to see more pics of your hubs.
Not by me. I was interested in his stuff. Jeff i went and checked out that thread. Some of the guys were using alloy bike wheels. Any idea what they were off of? I was offered a set back when I did the Sr dragster but i wanted it plain jane nothing fancy no chrome no alloy just old steel wheels etc. Now I would like a set of those spoked alloys or a set of wires. Are they Domestic or Japanese? What ever i have to finalize that before i can finish my spindles. I need the axle diameter of the wheel I will be using. And to that question , a ways back no i wasnt looking for help in case you misunderstood and thought I was. . I am however always interested in sharing ideas and seeing what others have done or are doing. Especialy pics Don
Oh, I knew you were a troublemaker alright. I just couldn't resist the opportunity to harass you about it.
The alloy rims are fine, but you still have to come up with a hub and spokes and lace and true them. Same with any motorcycle wheel you use. OOps I forgot he's making his own spindles. Lippy
Don I'm not sure what there off, they might be Kawa 18" frt wheels they bought 8 of them at a motorcycle recyclers
When I worked at a Jag,Triumph,MG shop and when the 6 and 12 cylinder Jag engines came out to replaced with Chibbie 350s we would rob some of the good parts and usually trashed the rest. We even put a 454 Chibbie in a silver cloud R.R. the R.R. engine sold locked up for 11k if I wanted to run a 6 banger I would be after a 272 or 292 GMC IMHO
I already have a Dragster with an american six. Been there done that. Still got it. Was a jag mechanic early in my career so they dont frighten me. . Jeff what should one expect to pay for that type of wheel? In round figures if you dont mind. what should I approx expect? Don
they got a real good price because the guy had too many and was getting ready to ship them to the aluminum recyclers $5 each the Harley Wheeles were $100 each that the going price around here.
Sometimes just for fun I try to theorize the fail point of a part. Assuming you finish the spindles the way I would, I come up with the fail point being the spindle shaft itself. Assuming you use Harley wheels, they typically have 3/4" axles. From what I know of trailer axle spindle sizing, but then also taking into account that the unsupported span of your spindles is much shorter than that of a trailer axle I come up with your spindles supporting around 1000 lb. each. I'm not an engineer so the guys that are worried clue me in what'd I miss? Jeff, what did you use for bearings in your wheels?
Well your thinking matches mine. The spindle (axle)itself will be the smallest cross sectional area. I did the bracing and tigged the steering arms on which also added more bracing as they wrap around the corner and support the shape. One completed and one tacked as my Alky RED friend was over for the afternoon. I used my Scratch tig to do it. I am now quite comfortable using it. Jeff thanks. I am going to the bike wreckers soon and needed some idea anyway.
the king pin angle has to inter sect the middle of the tire at the ground to lessen the load on the spindle
I hear ya! I finished the main spindles and steering arms assembly today. The spindles them selves (the axle) I will machine once I have settled on the wheels. I am working on the brackets for the upper long links for the front axle. Also got the 1 1/2 tubing for the upper frame . My pal Mike bought all the tubing for his Vintage style rail today as well. It is going to be one cool vintage rail. When i get a chance I will post some pics of his build . Mike is Old School. We help each other out a lot. He trucked my tubing home with his. His is similar to the old Chassis Research style build but revamped to be legal.
Yup. He has a contingincey plan to put in a roll bar of he has to but willl build it to spec as far as bracing, tubing welding methods and so on. it will have double overhead bars and helmut bar but in the old style. Mikes says if they wont let him run he can put the normal roll bar in and position it exactly in line with the other bar so it wont be visable from the side. Since it has only a stock 331 and is just a fun car i suspect they might be willing to let it run. If not he is prepared for that. He is making sure all bracing all tube sizing is as curently required with nothing fudged. We shall see what happens. Don
This morning at church a friend gave me a Holset 3LD turbocharger freshly rebuilt with a spare rebuild kit and some of the hardware. Now what? Don
I personally don't like turbos on drag cars just because they don't make the right sounds, esp. when your other option is a "real" blower. What do you plan to use for a steering box?
