Hot Rods Jaguar powered hot rods

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by jrblack30, Feb 17, 2010.

  1. Probably gonna get flamed for this one but.

Got a lead on a Jaguar powertrain, just wondering anyone ever seen a Jag powered rod?

I looked and couldn't find any pictures. This is an mid 50's motor, 3442CC with the SU carbs, running motor.

What do you think? Good idea or bad idea? Pro's and con's?

Actually, I've seen some pretty cool cars done with Jag stuff. What year stuff are we talking about?

There's someone one here doing an early boat tail style racer with one and it's lookin' cool! Bugatti style.

  3. It is a mid 50's Mark I, I believe.

the motor looks like this (not the actual motor)

Very cool looking engine, but I have heard that they are troublesome and expensive to repair. I don't know this from personal experience, just hearsay. In a hoodless car, it would definitely be an attention getter! I think I saw a heavily slammed early 50's Chevy or Pontiac convert w. a Jag 6. If I can find a pic, I'll post it.

Do a search on here, it's not common, but there are some cool examples out there.

I worked in a jag shop just out of high school and I can tell you that they require maintenance, but aren't particularly less reliable than most motors. Parts are a bit pricey though, so keep that in mind as you build.

Personally I think it would look bad*** to have a motor like that sitting between the frame rails.

    I've owned several Jags.

Jag engines themselves are bulletproof, but anything Lucas or anything made of rubber will need to be upgraded.

And the transmissions available thru the mid sixties are nothing to write home about. T-5, TKO, and T56 adaptations as well as the 700-R4, TH350, and 200-4R conversions are well suited for the big six.

  8. What transmission was behind them?

  10. MAn you just ruined it for me. That is permently engrained in my head now!

  11. You might want to get up with TFee here on the HAMB...his HRM-appearing Depot Hack is ****uar-powered I dooooo believe...

Also, off of the top of my head, an older issue of The Rodder's Journal, there was a beautifully executed, highly stylized Modified owned by Carlos Lara ( last-name-???) and I think it was built by Brizio and it too was Jaguar powered....I'd look it up for you, but I'm at work right now and all of my TRJs are at home safe and warm.

The inline-six Jaguar engine sure is beautiful and certainly evokes a similar look to a big Offy in my eyes.

    Good luck! -Mark

The earlier Jaguar sixes are beautiful !

No personal experience, but I'd probably agree with an earlier response .... replace all the Joe Lucas "Prince of Darkness" **** and you'd probably have a very reliable engine. :D

Theres a thread, somewhere on here, with a bunch of cars sitting in the woods behind someones house. There's a very rough T roadster with a 50's Jaguar engine. It looks like it was built 50 years ago.

It might be a little hard to find but I'll look for it.

  19. I am feeling the love for the motor, but that 60's throwback thing called an "A" truck has left a very sour taste in my mouth.

It looks like I have to go talk with this guy tonight.

I have a buddy who owns an 80's XJS. I rarely see the car but am always hearing about what he is fixing on it.

Tell me any "80s" car that you can't say that about. But it's probably not the motor he's having problems with anyway.

To me I think it would be sort of weird looking in a hot rod (depending on the body style) because they're so long, but they would look right at home in something like this:

Most the work has been replacing gaskets and seals on the motor. It always seems to be leaking. Currently its parked because he can't find exhaust parts for it.

The Jag is an '86, my own daily is an '85 Corvette. I drive mine to work almost every day the Jag shows up at the office once or twice a year at most.

While neither car is HAMB friendly its pretty clear to me that one is a much more reliable driver than the other. The only way I'd own a Jag is if it has a Chevy motor.

The Jag motor looks cool but I expect my cars to be drivable too.

I saw a beautiful Duece highboy at Pomona a couple of years ago with a Jag V-12 in it, and in Tulsa, Ok. there's a real nice '40 Ford coupe with an early XKE six in it. I've seen others, but I can't remember specifics. It's a cool looking motor, and they run, as long as you put a proper electrical system behind them. I know where I can get one for $300 bucks near here and am thinking about it.
