  1. Probably about half the jags on the streets have American built engines. There are kits to swap small block Chevies into jags.I have no experience with Jag engines, but know they are expensive and hard to keep propery tuned due mostly to those carbs, and lucas electronics. They do look good polished out.If you are going on a long road trip you better cary some spare parts.Hard to find out in the boonies.

Suprised about your comment about the 40 in Tulsa, I was just getting ready to post about it also. Last I saw it had a pretty good crease in the top from a tree falling on it. Have no idea about where it is now. Joe

British cars have a bad reputation in general because people just don't know how to work on them if they aren't an enthusiast. All gasoline engines run on the same principles... British designed engines just go about it a different way. A lot of the bad reputation came from back in the day when someone would *buy* a cheap British car and take it down to "Joe the Chevy 350 rebuilder" to "tinker with the carbs"...

British cars can be very reliable. Just gotta know how to work on 'em. My daily is a 60's Brit-mobile and I've got thousands of trouble free miles on it. I haven't been under the hood for actual maintenance or tuning for several months. Just oil changes.

Good luck with that Jag motor. They're great engines with hemispherical combustion chambers. I think a Jag inline six would be a sweet upgrade to a Falcon or 6 banger Mustang.

They're no slouches and have a beautiful sound that's unique to them.

One of the prettiest in line sixes IMO - dressed up with triple Webers and polished cam covers they look awesome. The head was designed by Harry Weslake originally for the XK 120 and they came in 2.4, 3.4, 3.8 and 4.2 liter versions. 2.4 is a bit of a wimp but any of the others are great. They did some serious damage in competition form - C Type, D Type three time Le mans winner, Lightweight E-Types as raced by Briggs Cunningham. They are just glorious....

Mine is based on a 1960 Jaguar MK2 drivetrain, but if I'm not mistaken, the engine has the same basic layout as it was designed in 1948.

    Definetly bad ass for 1948.

Hey Jim, back around the late '70s there was a '33-'34 coupe in South Florida that was Jag powered. Made a few magazines. I believe the builders name was Ben Dener or something close. Searched for some info or pics but no luck. On the other side of the coin, back in the late '60s my brother put together a chevy powered '56 Jag roadster. 348 W block, 4 speed hydro and Chevy rear. Sure wish I knew where it was now.

Like anything, old Jags have their share of issues. But the plus is that the motors were put is some of the most attractive cars ever made.

Here is my E. The motor isn't quite as attractive in 1970 form, but she's still a beautiful car.

We are a marginal bunch ! I'm the guy building the boattail skiff-torpedo-demi-tonneau.... I did gather a lot of parts for it and obtained a 3.5 liter Jaguar engine. I also, by incredible luck, got a S head for it. It's almost an Ebay special. A few weeks ago, I looked at the engine with squintered eyes and....just having overhauled a Spitfire engine, looking at the calender, I decided that a motor ready to plop in would be best...Tha darned thing was found on....ebay..... and was supposed to arrive yesterday! NOT....It comes from a pedigreed collection. Now I learn that 4.2's are to be avoided....The chassis is mostly finished. 1932 Chevrolet frame, front axle from a 51 pick-up New brakes, hoses...etc, stainless steel roller bearing king pins...rear end: Mazda 1986 pick-up new brakes etc. The original 6 lug wheels fit! You see 1932 Chevys weren't hydraulic and foot stopping power with a 260 HP engine à la Flintstone won't cut it.
The contruction of the body will start in earnest just as soon as the driving shaft is fitted in a couple weeks. It has parts from a few different makes, mostly American. It also sports real live Bugatti type 44 stanchions! A Jordan steering wheel and stainless Ford huge headlights from 1932. At the Burlington hot rod show years back, I found new reflectors for them WITH the turn signal lights in them. A Dodge pick up radiator, 1932 (again) dead ringer for a Hispano-Suiza will take care of the cooling....I hope.
This Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang type car, called Bois de Boulogne has been in my mind for (don't believe me , I don't care) 45 years. Later, later, one day...HAS ARRIVED! Just as soon as I figure out how to download some pictures, I'll treat you to them, if you permit. Thank you for your patience. Frederick.

  19. A good mate of my fathers built a 40 Ford pick up with a V-12 Jag motor, the whole drive line and front end were Jag. It was a nice looking metallic green.
He sold it some time in the late 80's (It wasnt a typical 80,s rod!) and it just seemed to disappear. I do wish I knew what happened to it, hell I would settle for some pictures of it.

    Doc.

  20. Well Lucas has nothing to with the motor except for the distrubtor so that doesnt matter. 6 cyl motors are wonderful and the early ones the sexiest.
I was a Jag mech in the late 60s. Worked atthe local dealer. Alway liked them. Here are pics of my engine I scored which is from a 87 Soveriegnand is a 24 valve 6 cyl of 3.6 litres. Here is is sittng in its new home.

Jag v12, Homemade fuel injection, all home engineered, in a homebuilt t roadster I htink it is, with really subtle but cool engineering and fab tricks left, right and centre.

Q: Why don't the British build computers?

A: Because they couldn't get one to leak oil.

Seriously, Jag engines are fine; the big issues (as noted above) are the carbs, ignition, and one not mentioned - overheating. If it's ever gotten hot, the head needs to be milled. So in a hot rod a good radiator is a must. And if you want to be double-cool, buy an 80s XJS and swap a Chevy into it for a daily driver. Then take the V12, polish it and carb swap it, and stick it in a hot rod. I've seen a couple with tunnel rams and dual Holleys. You can keep the crowds at car shows guessing for hours.

    I must apologize.
I thought that someone had talked about what I was building. I did mention it when I joined. I just read the 17 page build of Flipper and I am humbled. He is the builder mentioned at the top.
Another case of opening my mouth too soon.
Unfortunately my manufacturing concern prevents me from writing all about my endeavour, still, I do have some pictures in my album.
