They put a lot of money into the R&D of those engines. I think they had at least a 1/2 dozen different designs in the late 60's.
yeah Olds was deep into the r&d......I guess we can only imagine what could of been... anybody know the where any of this r&d stuff is? (if not destroyed)...
There is also a Hot Rod with about a dozen of those R&D Engines on the cover, I think it was a 1969 issue.
Hey Tman - beat u to it, hehe I love those old toros. The torque steer must have been awesome. Check this out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziYJVoaOeiI
Naw, I am thinking of ANOTHER issue unless that one has the spread with all the engines and the GM suit standing by them? I thought that picture was on the cover of mine?
If it's the one I'm thinking of I've got that issue somewhere too and it's all Pontiac engines. Here's a GM hemi that did get built but never put into a production car. 69 302 Chevy built for Trans Am racing and a few survived. This one is all aluminum but a fellow Hamber posted a pic of one awhile back that has the "hemi" heads bolted to an iron block. Not sure if they came both ways or if the top end conversion was sold seperately as well but I do know the intake & exhaust manifolds are unique to these heads as well.
After working at the GM Tech Center for 10 years, I for one am suprised it did not get up and walk out. Very cool engine. Any clue how many were made or how far it went in trials for production?
Stepchild, that Terrifying Toronado is sick. 2 blown 425's from the factory (sponsered)? It's just crazy. The wheels on that car are a work of art.
I am putting a 455 in my 1953 chevy. Right back inside the lines. just like that. Mustangs are gay, no matter what year.
Yeah, it's not traditional, but it's a hell of a piece of American automotive history. Never again will we see anything like the stuff that was going on in Detroit in the late 60's. It must have been cool to work for GM back then. Is this a great county or what??
Not to piss in anyone's cornflakes here - it's a great thread - but the 455 "hemi" Olds mentioned here actually had '4 valves-per-cylinder' "pent-roof" chambers and therefore, technically was not a hemi. Still, a very cool engine and an absolute crime and shame that it never made production! Mart3406 ======================
I'm not sure, but I don't think the olds was factory backed. I remember going to new york national speedway one summer to see the hurst haiiry olds. the toronado was there also and wanted a match race. didn't happen because the hurst didn't want to take the chance of being beaten by an independent team
Thank you, spark plugs through the valve covers do not a Hemi make. Fact the newer ones from Dodge don't have hemispherical combustion chambers. Makes me laugh. You have the rules wrong 64 is for the classifieds, you also have the vibe of this place wrong. And Mustangs are chick cars.
Anyone who thinks that GM lacks engineering know how is sadly mistaken. The foot sloggers know what they're doing , but the marketing 'holes and accountants have succeeded in destroying the company < rant over> Back to babes, burnouts and rock 'n roll!
I saw some of these engines when I visited the Olds Museum Lansing,MI back in '89. Does anyone know if that place is still open? The museum not Lansing.
