    Very cool pic, thanks for all your postings Lowkat and Dog.

    BTW, for those who have never seen this type of thing in person. The motorcycle wheels are turning on a set of rollers. The riders do alot of leaning and weaving back and forth on the rollers to catch your attention. Looks like she is doing a seat standing trick here.

    <o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com<img src=" images="" smilies="" redface.gif="" border="0" alt="" title="Embarrassment" smilieid="2" class="inlineimg"></o:smarttagtype> Here are a few photos of <st1:city w:st="on">Washington</st1:city> <st1:state w:st="on">DC</st1:state> that my father took from the top of the <st1><st1>Washington</st1><st1> Monument </st1></st1>in the late '40s. First is a ground-level shot of the monument base. Cars parked close around it; you won't see that today. I believe that's the family's 1940 Chrysler parked at the street light.
    <o></o>
    While I know the basic layout of <st1:state w:st="on"><st1>Washington</st1></st1:state>, I compared these photos with satellite images on Google to determine how the cityscape has changed in the intervening 60 to 65 years.

All the buildings flanking the reflecting pool and along the bottom are, of course, gone today, replaced by open space. Quite a number of war memorials, including the Vietnam Wall, are sited in the vacated space. The oval pool is where the World War II Memorial is now.

    <link rel="File-List" href="file:///C:%5CDOCUME%7E1%5COWNERY%7E1.000%5CLOCALS%7E1%5CTemp%5Cmsohtml1%5C01%5Cclip_filelist.xml"><o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com<img src=" images="" smilies="" redface.gif="" border="0" alt="" title="Embarrassment" smilieid="2" class="inlineimg"></o:smarttagtype>The third photo looks in the opposite direction, to the Capitol. The prominent change is that the low building at the bottom left has been supplanted by the National Museum of American History. The low buildings beyond the red-brick Smithsonian have been replaced by the Air and <st1><st1>Space</st1><st1> M</st1>useum </st1>and beyond that, the Museum of the American Indian.
    <o></o>
    I'm amazed at the apparent lack of activity in these photos. The curbsides are lined with cars, and there's a bus crossing the Mall. But in today's city, cars, trucks, and cabs would clog the streets, and the Mall would teem with pedestrians.

    <link rel="File-List" href="file:///C:%5CDOCUME%7E1%5COWNERY%7E1.000%5CLOCALS%7E1%5CTemp%5Cmsohtml1%5C01%5Cclip_filelist.xml"><o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com<img src=" images="" smilies="" redface.gif="" border="0" alt="" title="Embarrassment" smilieid="2" class="inlineimg"></o:smarttagtype>The camera is turned slightly to the left from the third photo to the fourth. The red-roofed buildings are Congressional offices and are still standing today. The low building in the foreground is gone, replaced by the <st1><st1>Museum</st1> of <st1>A</st1>merican </st1>History.

    <link rel="File-List" href="file:///C:%5CDOCUME%7E1%5COWNERY%7E1.000%5CLOCALS%7E1%5CTemp%5Cmsohtml1%5C01%5Cclip_filelist.xml"><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:WordDocument> <w:View>Normal</w:View> <w:Zoom>0</w:Zoom> <w:punctuationKerning/> <w:ValidateAgainstSchemas/> <w:SaveIfXMLInvalid>false</w:SaveIfXMLInvalid> <w:IgnoreMixedContent>false</w:IgnoreMixedContent> <w:AlwaysShowPlaceholderText>false</w:AlwaysShowPlaceholderText> <w:Compatibility> <w:BreakWrappedTables/> <w:SnapToGridInCell/> <w:WrapTextWithPunct/> <w:UseAsianBreakRules/> <w:DontGrowAutofit/> </w:Compatibility> <w:BrowserLevel>MicrosoftInternetExplorer4</w:BrowserLevel> </w:WordDocument> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:LatentStyles DefLockedState="false" LatentStyleCount="156"> </w:LatentStyles> </xml><![endif]--><style> <!-- /* Font Definitions */ @font-face {font-family:Garamond; panose-1:2 2 4 4 3 3 1 1 8 3; mso-font-charset:0; mso-generic-font-family:roman; mso-font-pitch:variable; mso-font-signature:647 0 0 0 159 0;} /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-parent:""; margin:0in; margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:Garamond; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman";} @page Section1 {size:8.5in 11.0in; margin:1.0in 1.25in 1.0in 1.25in; mso-header-margin:.5in; mso-footer-margin:.5in; mso-paper-source:0;} div.Section1 {page:Section1;} --> </style><!--[if gte mso 10]> <style> /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} </style> <![endif]--> Turning a bit more to left, we see the White House and the Rose Garden. The Ellipse, in the foreground, is still open space, but the baseball diamonds and football goal posts have disappeared.
