Another thanks Josh. Is that Jerry Wall's Yellow Jacket rear engine midget waiting for resto?

Never mind, I looked at my pics of Wall's car and answered my question. No, it isn't.

I had no idea "babe" was still around! That's just awesome. Was Mario's first sprint car a former Horn car?

    More cool stuff.

I like that close-up of Little Joe.

I don`t remember Toby in the #7. Someone will have to fill me in on some of these.

"Was Mario's first sprint car a former Horn car?''

Yes. That Fuel activator Special driven by Mario(1961?) was the Horn car. Hinnershitz and Bill Schindler both drove the car after Ted`s death.

Photographer Bruce Craig found the remains of the Horn car scattered around in the woods behind a race garage.

The story was in Open Wheel so someone will be able to provide more details than me.

Rootie do you have the photos of what it looked like when Bruce Craig found the remains of the car?

It got dumped at Flemington in 62 and then got parted out, what was left ended up in a field in N.J.

The day they finished building it 1939. Amazingly, except for a towing accident, it was never wrecked until it got dumped at Flemington.

As I recall,Ted was practically unbeatable in the car. Hinnershitz nor Shindler had the kind of results with the car that Ted did, although to be fair,it was getting a bit long in the tooth by then.

23 out of 24 features in 1948 alone. It was pretty advanced for the time also. Supposedly he made his own magnesium pistons and change them out after every 5 races.

That looks a lot like Lebanon Valley Speedway.

If it is, I was there that day. I remember Mario brushing the 2nd turn wall several times that day.

Yes, West Lebanon (NY) May 21, 1961. It was Mario's first Sprint Car race, and I believe he finished 8th.

There's not much (if anything!) in "this" from "that pile" - the car in the McConnell collection is a recreation, at best.

Since it was recently discussed, how much of the Horn car was there in the woods when Bruce found it?

Looks like the frame, Tail, Cowl(Mangled) and Nose at least.
Looks like the front bumper maybe hood and side panels, too. There might be more outside of the area covered by the photo. Looks like a tire at the Rt of the photo,so that might be the rear axle and wheels.
More than some "Restorations" that have been built with nothing more than a dash plate left.

Like the "Cheeseman" car, call it what you want, it's outstanding work. If one was to subscribe to the aformentioned 50% frame criteria, I guess it would be considered a restoration.

So one says recreation and another says restoration. It looks like quite a few pieces are there in the picture.

I believe the "pile" was found behind the garage of Ed Greens in Piscataway NJ. Ed was the mechanic for Larry Dicksons Nesler car in 1965 He may have later worked for John Wergland?? Not really sure how much of the frame was salvaged.

    Rootie,

Does that Open Wheel Story talk about what was left and who did the work to bring it back?

    Rootie,

Does the Open wheel article discuss who did the work to bring it back? I would think one of the old Masters(Myron Stevens,Pop Dreyer,Joe Gertler, etc) would have been wielding the hammers.

Sorry for the double post,I was checking something and when I came back here the first reply wasn`t showing.

The debate over Restoration/restoration could rage on for years, but I`m just glad cars like this exist either way.
