I have a 29 special coupe that im slowly building, Im wanting to build a traditional hotrod out of it, Ive allready got a 59ab motor and a ford F1 for build parts. The coupe is complete from fenders to hood, grill and radiator, it still has the seat in it also. I have planned on not running any fendes at all, and either a 31 or 32 grill with no hood and chopping it 4 inchs and running no fenders. But I have seen a few model As with the running fenders and running boards still on with out a hood and I think they look real good also. My fenders are in good shape so now Im confused on which way to go? Fell free to post pics of hotrod model As with fenders.

    Thanks
    Billy

I dig them both ways. But if you have the fenders, my vote is to use them. It will be different than 90% of them out there. Here's my Coupe with fenders.

'28/'29 coupes look much better with fenders than without...... You can still use a '30/'31 or '32 grille shell and keep the '29 hood.....

Who in their right mind would use a '30/31 shell on a '28/29? That's going backwards in the looks department. I'd even say a '32 looks odd on a '28/29. Stick with using the stock shell on a '28/29, regardless of whether the car has fenders or not.

  13. Keep the Fenders, I think Model A's look better with them on. The thing about fenders is that they have to be full of tires to look right, and the rake needs to be suttle but noticable. I'd keep at least the hood top also. I ran mine without a hood last year and over the winter I built a hood top out of a piece of aluminum sheet, .080 thick and I like the look much better with the hood. But to each his own, do it the way you like it best.

    I love my fenders..
    it makes me "different"

if you have a good set of them..its well worth the look.
it poses some "rules" to your build, but they sure do look nice when done well..IMO

Thanks guys it is a hard decision, but like yall say Ive allread go them. I def dig the look of the big tires with the fenders, so running a 32 grill will not be good? I though that would be hotrod, I like the look with a 32 or 31 grill with no hood?

so why does some people say not to run the 32 grill in my coupe?? I see that alot of people are running 32 grills in ther model A's? Im either going to runa 32 grill or maybe use a 31 or 30 grill and make a insert for it?

IMO, 32 grilles only look good if your also running a 32 frame. Otherwise they look too big/tall compared to the cowl. I personally don't like 30-31 grilles and wouldn't put one on a 28-29 for sure.

I know this is an old thread, but I'm hoping someone can help me out. I am contemplating buying '32 frame for the additional engine room... hoping to put a Nailhead in it. I would like to run my original fenders... does the longer frame have a different wheel space that will make my fenders not fit correctly?

    Thanks for the help.

Yep. Model A is 103" wheelbase, '32 is 106". Better get ready to recess your firewall.

I like them both ways and was going fenderless until I picked up a 31 Victoria that everyone says needs fenders.

The thing with fenders though is that you probably will drive the car a lot more and find less excuses to not drive it somewhere with fenders than if it didn't have fenders. A bit of rain in the forecast ? no problem the fenders will keep the water on the road were it belongs instead of letting the tires throw it inside the car and on the engine on turns. A coupe may not be anyway near as bad about getting you wet in a sudden rain storm as a T bucket but I still remember the water coming off the front tires on my T in the first rain storm I drove it in.

My avatar is a 28 Special Coupe I built in the mid 90s with a V8 60 flathead, I would vote fenders. I'm building a 30 Sport Coupe with a flathead now and it will also have fenders.
