chopped 50 did you make sure the clearance on the main was .001? there is not much there in the way to keep oil from leaking out and a flat main with proper clearance helps. I know you're not supposed to put silicone under the cap but I know a builder who smears a little near the outside edge and his blocks may show a drip or two after many miles.

Been putting together a '31 closed cab pickup with a chassis from one HAMBer and the cab and bed from another. First STOCK A I've ever owned; what a learning curve. Simple and Sweet. The perfect rig for an old retired curmudegeon to take to town in the mountains.

Course the hot rodder in me took over, and I've picked up a header, 2x2 intake and Cyclone head. Just in case ;c)

  5. I did not check, Im thinking of pulling the engine out and doing a double check to see where it's coming from.

I have had the engine for alot of years and it never leaked this way before. I did however change the rear main seal and put a new oil pan gasket on

On the back of the January 2008, Vol. 17.3 Secrets of Speed magazine is a Riley Two Port based Model B engine built by Bob Baas of Alexandria, MN for Ron Limrick of Thunder Bay, Ontario. I am interested in the black oil filter assembly supporting a white oil filter on this engine for my Riley Two Port Engine. The challenge is I am unable to find contact info for either Bob Baas the builder or Ron Limrick the engine owner. The picture in question is shown below. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hey Dave did you call the builder? Its a small pic but it almost looks home made he might have them made up or makes them him self. If you get any info please post it I like it too...

This big news in my Banger World is that the 1931 Banger Coupe made it's maiden voyage this Saturday. Basically assembled the car in seven days. The starter spun the engine about two revs before it started and then proceeded to drive it about 20 miles and had a good but cold (no side glass yet) shake down run. I was going to debut it at Autorama next week but didn't get my application in on time, so I'll bring it to Billet Proof Detroit in May together with its older sister-the 1928 Banger Roadster.

Hey Guys, as far as I have read on these banger threads, you guys really like dual stromberg 81 carbs for them. I cannot afford two of them let alone one. Anybody use the stromberg 48's for duals? Are they too small? I can get my hands on them but not the 81's.

    48's are too big. 48's are bigger then 97's. I'd use 1 48 before I'd use two.

The flywheel looks great Bill, did you follow the blueprint from the soss mag, I've been waiting to get some cnc time myself to do the same thing.

Get a hold of SaltFlatMatt - he made great header for my banger last spring. You won't find a pic on his website, but it is the 4 down, into 1 on an angle style.

Anybody want to trade a polished dual carb manifold for a single? Mine is super shiny polished.

    Thanks FRO...
I cut a little more meat then the soss. I did all the OD stuff in the cnc mill. I used a 1" ball end mill for a nice rad. next to the ring gear flang. I think soss turned a 30 angle.

What about two 97's. I want to run duals and have two holley 94's but what I've read is that the 81's are the best.

  18. You guys probably already know, Charlie Yapp sent out a correction for the specs in the mag article. If I remember correctly, the original specs put the flywheel in danger of failing:eek: FYI, just in case.

What else is done to the engine? You'll need @ 7:1 or higher compression and a cam bigger then a B to really get good use of two 97's.

I bum soss mags from a friend But yes I marked his print. Very good point thanks for the reminder :D

  21. what about running them progressive? My engine has a 'C' head, heavy flathead cam and adj. Lifters. Im trying to jet my 2 down to run on this setup, am I wasting my time?

    Norm,
I don't think a progressive linkage is a good idea. The manifold you are using will probably starve two of the cylinders if it was set up that way.

I think you have a challenge to get your engine to run with out a stumble. If you jet it down too far, it will probably be too lean on the top end. Just make sure to do a plug chop once you get it running the way you want.

I had a stumble in my 3 carb set up, so I made restricter plates to go under the carbs to increase the vacuum and it helped.

    SWEET... I love that thing

  25. I'll be 35 if I make it to the end of March. Started assembling my Johnny Cash Special in the spring of '05 and I was driving it a year later. She's got parts of at least 21 Model A's in her at last count. She's still rusty and half incomplete with no bed and conduit for a bottom body line, but a friend and I rebuilt the engine in the fall of '07 and she runs great. Since my wife and I love to drive her as often as humanly possible, and I don't have a proper garage to work on the old girl in, the beutification process has been slow. FUNction over form I guess. She'll do better than 60mph on a good road and stop on a dime. We're having fun and that's all you can ask for in this life. Luke

I wanted a vertical mounted oil filter, on my A-FORD-ABLE full flow oil filter adapter kit.
Found an adapter from Ford Racing (P/N M-6880-A50) it mounts to the the A-FORD-ABLE kit and a FL-1A oil filter is screwed on the M-6880-A50 adapter.

a couple questions, probly questions a new guy would ask... but do they sell an adapter to fit a 39 trans to the 'A' block?? also, i got my motor back together with the new thomas head (has piston relief), single 81 (getting plenty of fuel)... other than that she's all stock. it fired right up, runs perfect, accelerates like nobody's business!! the only thing is that i'm getting a knocking when i accelerate hard or when she is workin going up a hill.... this is really my first time doing anything 'performance' to an engine... could this be a timing or spark issue or is this a bottom end issue?? i would not call this noise a ping..... this engine had set in a barn for 50 years, then was "freshened up" (oil change) and drove only a bit by it's previous owner, i got it and pulled the head to fix the stuck exhaust valve and then put all the new stuff on... it's also leaking some really thick black oil from the front of the engine.... any input would be greatly appreciated.

i didnt catch this earlier and wondered why everyone was posting ages, i'm 23 and have been fortunate enough to have the space to own two nice 'A's. my first was a 30 Tudor sedan (my stocker) that i got when i was 20 and the newest one i got about 3 months ago is a 31 coupe (my hot rod)... i started with the 4 bangers and they stuck on me! but i'm still new at this so excuse some of the easy questions.

  29. I've seen a scan on here before of the correction but damned if I can find it now... anyone have a link?

  30. I would guess you have a detonation problem, try retarding the timing when the "noise "happens and see if it goes away.
