I would trade but I also have no interest in a Stude. With that said, I would not even begin a build of a Stude. Just me....

Nice "wrinkle" in the topic. I kinda suspected sumpin like this. About the rest of us...for me, I'd be hard pressed to trade any of my Packards for a late30s Ford coupe, but I'd trade my bubbletop Chevy for one. I'd have to be drunk and stoned to trade my 54 Chev PU because there's a 'vision' there that would make me die insane if I couldn't see it through. Then again nobody in their right mind would offer such a trade for my truck so I think I'm safe. Offer me a 36 3W and a shit load of cash, both equal condition for my 41 160 Packard cpe? No. Believe it or not the 3W is probably worth more on the open market and it took me over 20yrs to find this Packard. I can find a 3W tomorrow with enough $$$$$.

i wouldnt trade because there are more old fords around than studebakers and i like something a bit different to drive , a packard or studebaker , or some of the more unique cars even though not sought after as much would be more fun to me

  4. I would definitely trade. The Ford coupe is more traditional. Is that not why we are here on this board?

  5. Studie all the way.... Ford is a four letter word.

If I were in the middle of a Studebaker build and was enjoying the build, I'd have to assume that I had good reason to have chosen to build the Stude in the first place.

That reason would be enough that I'd eventually have a finished Studebaker.

But... Fool that I am, I'd probably buy the Ford from the guy and have that ripped apart too:D

  7. I would trade,FOR SURE! Especially if it's a 39 Coupe,35-36 3w,or even a 37 Coupe. The only Studebaker I wouldn't trade would be a 53...

Depends on which Studebaker and which Ford. Some of each are more desireable. Tough to beat the Starlight or Starliner coupe. Same for Ford, 3 window verses 5 window, mid '30s verses '37 or '38.

Brand don't matter to me, it is the styling. Besides, I have both a mid '30s Ford Coupe and an early '50s Studebaker project.

    Neal

To answer the question, I would keep a starliner coupe over a '38 Ford coupe.

    I'd keep the Stude.

But then, I always like something a little different than the next guy has....

  13. Just by posting this thread, it sounds like your not really into the Stude build. If you were wanting to see the Stude to completion, you would stay the course.

..... So i think you answered your own question?

    Make the trade!

If it was a Stude, Hudson, or the like, I sure wouldn't trade it for a Ford.

Since this question does not include that you are building for return on investment, just on principle, here is my take. I'd finish what I started. Your friends may tell the story about the car you should have got, no biggie. We all have those stories. Better than stories told about projects you never finished.

I'm not an ODDBALL type, keep the laughter down, and I'm not a OMG ITS A FORD person.........

I am however, all about the I WILL FINISH what I started come Hell or high water.

  20. If it is a 53 or 54 Stude coupe, well, it is the best looking 50's car made and a damn sight better looking than a 35 thru 40 ford. And no, there are no styling cues from Ford there, it was the freshest thing rollin'. and a Ford coupe from the 35 to 40....ho-hum. And to address the statement the ford is lighter, no, the average weight of those Fords is 2800 to 2950 obs, A Stude Coupe is 2700. Parts are easy to get, you can put any motor in in easily, Stude guys won't give you a ration of shit about doing that and you wont pull up next to one at most car shows.
Gee, does it show I own a 53 Stude coupe...lol!

I would not trade and here is why. When I first started to build cars I never had the money needed to make a stand out "popular" make car.I naturally drifted to oddball makes because they were cheap to buy and when you go to a cruise people will look at your car out out of shear curiosity. To get looks with a mainstream make of car you need to have ace seat guy and billybob engine guru and P. Paul the paint man or whom ever the big name flavor of the month is work on your car.It is a who has the most dollars contest not how cool the car is.So that is why I still have a few oddballs in my junk.

  22. i love oddballs, but i like older better. studes are cool, but way to modern for this petrolhead. hell, 35s to modern for me! lol.

So everyone on here should have a 32,'cos it's seen as THE most traditional, huh? I'm on here to check out the wealth of traditional Hot Rod & Kustoms built by people with imagination, vision and passion, not to check out trends and try and tick all the boxes to make me "most traditional" and hang with the "in-crowd".What is this "tradition"? 30's? 40's? 50's? 60's? All I know is that some people (including me) will like the look of '53 studes better than '30's ford, and vice versa. I "get" traditional , but how you define it depends on how your particular mind works, and it's also very easy to become a slave to it.Variety is the spice of life .

    Each to their own, but................

If I were building a real oddball it would be because I couldn't get what I really wanted so yeah Id jump on the trade.
Apart from my 48 Austin (Which is 30s style anyway) I'm not really into late model cars like the Stude. I prefer fat fenders and wind out flat windscreens.

    Doc.

    *EDIT*
I just read through this thread and am blown away at the number of people who are building cars for reasons like,

    'Because it stands out', or.

'It will be worth more money' etc.

I have only ever built cars for me, the way I want them so they satisfy ME, no one else. I couldn't build a car just to stand out, I wouldn't compromise my automotive taste just to 'fit in' or be one of the 'cool guys'.

Build for your self, not to impress others. You will suddenly enjoy this a whole lot more.

Jump on the trade. I'm a Ford fan for probably the same reasons that others are.

i love early fords! there easy to find parts for and resale value is probably higher

  27. Highlander someone mentioned weight as a factor. If the Stude were in my possesion I know that a '53 Commander fully optioned weighs 3100 lbs and in base trim 3000. So if weight is a concern a '38 Coupe in stock trim weighs pretty close to that and the Stude will slip stream.

For those who don't really know me I've always been and always will be a run what you brung type. Its always been a mechanics ride for me no frills and the very best mechanicals I can get ahold of. Someone might call it a jalopy or a beater.

I would trade simply because I like the 30's fords. If is something I want its a good trade.

I'm very impulsive.... so for me it would depend on what I saw when I looked at the 2 vehicles, and how they moved me.
Instinct, and initial gut reaction drive most of my decisions... not the best practice, but what the hell I'll be dead soon enough... no regrets

I would trade because I like late 30's Ford coupes way better than mid 50's Stude's.
