Just got in from the garage, and contemplating a job offer that to some in the car world, would be the icing on the cake.
I just finished a deuce project and now am finishing of some loose ends on an O/T car and planning my return to the merc job in Mexico.

    The story goes like this......
About 3 months ago, I was asked by a retosration shop owner to help him administer his busines for him as it had grown to rapidly.
He has a couple of foreign clients that have soley O/T..Ferraris, Lamborghinis and DeTamosas.
Two weeks ago we had a surprise visit from the ex-heads of Detamosa and Ferrari, that are planning to resurrect the Detamosa-Guara in some form or another.
The meeting closed, with an invite to myself to go to Modena, Italy and see a couple of workshops (secret locations) and talk some more.

Well, I will go to Italy out of curiosty, and see......

    What I am basically, asking......
would you take a job offer like this that some would give their right arm for???...or
    be the rodder instead.....

I arleady know, my decision, I am just curious if you had a offer like this .. what direction would your life take??:)

well what do you do now?

I don't think it matters as long as you do what you love, hell you can always build on the side and use all that fancy equipment to help you :D

Well, of course we don't know your family situation, are there kids involved, school changes, does the wife want to go?? etc. etc.

All things being equal I'd take a good long look at a high paying job in the automotive field. You don't have to stop being a rodder, there's nights and weekends. That's when most of us get to work on our projects.

Good luck whatever you decide to do.

Dude Do it!!! I mean you can always build this for passion and hobby but to work for a company in it's resurrection with such prestige is something that you should not hesitate on. Hot Rods will always be waiting for you when you choose to leave but that opportunity is only going to come once maybe.

Oh wait, what the hell am I saying??? Does this mean your not going to build my '32 for a pie anymore???

I don't think there's a question here at all. I'm a product development engineering for a company that's very well known in the modern sport compact car market aka what most old timers here would call "ricers". But outside of work I'm a hot rodder... always have been and always will be. I LOVE working in the performance aftermarket automotive industry and I could care less if I'm working with a Toyota or a Chevy or a Ferrari. It pays the bill and I really enjoy what I do. So I guess I'm saying, yeah, go for it.

Not really as criptic as it sounds. If your life is happy where you are now I suspect it will still be happy in new surroundings. If you are miserable in your present situation, not sure a big move would help?

Like the others offered the "rest of the story" is important. Is there family involved? Would they go with you? Good luck in your decision.

What you do for a living does not have to define what you are. It can, however, offer the money to fund who you are.

I'd take the job and drive a rod to work every day :D

I love working on cars and I always wish I had more time. But I have always been scared that if I went and workin a shop of any kind all of a sudden it would become work, and no longer what i do to play. It is a fear I have always had, but who knows till you try?

I get the feeling you are looking at taking the position on. Good for you for at least checking it out first, but it would be a huge experience. Don't get put in the box with a whole lot of regrets, it's too late then. Good luck. :)

  17. Regrets are something that EAT AWAY AT YOUR SOUL.

I have a list of regrets in my life, my list has far more lines filled with those things I didn't do rather than things I regret having done.

So oz40 which side of your regrets list is full? Is it the damn I didn't do that - or - I wish I wouldn't have?

First I'd learn how to spell De Tomaso, and then I'd go for it...

  19. I have had plenty of jobs in my life, but when the end of the week comes and the paycheck is in my hand, I don't take my job home with me. Honestly, if I built hot rods for a living, all day, every day, maybe I wouldn't be so gung-ho to do it as a hobby. Jobs and hobbies should be two separate entities.

    Take the job:

    1. If your sure you want it and it doesn't destroy any relationships you have now.
    2. If the pay is good enough to let you save at least 15% after your living expenses including your car activities.
    3. You must get a contract. At least a year, preferably longer. Minimum 6 months pay penalty for early termination. Contract renegotiation completed 3 months prior to completion.
    4. 3to 4 weeks off for visit back to Australia each year.

Good luck to you. Sounds like a great opportunity.

I, personally, would probably do it. It sounds like an amazing opportunity, and if it doesn't work out, then you just go back to where you came from and pick up where you left off (best case scenario). From how you described it I think you are going for it, so good luck if you are.
And as far as the hobby/work thing, I build hot rods for a living, and at the end of the day the ONLY thing I want to do (other than eat) is work on hot rods. I think it actually increases my love for hot rods, so many inspirations and new ideas flow around, just wish I had more time in the day and more energy.

I guess you'd have to ask yourself, are they suits or engineers? Do they want you for administration or more? Are you gonna be "Tucker's" right hand man?

On your fact finding visit, keep your eyes wide open. If you research Guara, you learn the marque has had a number of false starts and unhappy endings.

It could be that all the pie in Italy isn't the pizza pie. Some of it could be pie-in-the sky.

Could be a long walk back, later. And there's that pond thing you'd have to wade.

Id look 'em in the eye and tell them If they want my services they'll have to bring Italy to me..
Then I'd shout out a Rick Flair's "Whooo!!" and walk away. Seriously.

You can do both. Take the job and be a rodder, that is.

I'd be all over that opportunity like white on rice.

    Good luck.

The opportunity to visit and live in another country and culture makes this a go. I have a cousin who played pro basketball in the states and then took an offer to play in Greece. He did it and said it was great. Not only did he get paid more, but he said the experience of seeing and doing things in a whole different country and culture was priceless.

    Do it. Soak it up.

Life is too short to live it saying "wish I would have"
