  1. Welp, I'm snowed in...again!

So while taking a break from jobs around the house/garage, I had some time to go through some old programs this morning. These programs had been damaged by water at some point, and most of the pages were stuck together. I was able to gather some information before...but today I learned some neat history...

The objective here in this post, is really to try and help anyone else whom might be looking for more info on drivers, car clubs, etc, like myself.

  2. Crud, my duties call... be back after shoveling.

  3. I was talking with Gater here on the Hamb. I noticed in a thread he was looking for more Gater CC info, and he had talked about having some early SCTA programs that I didn't have. I wrote to him asking if might have any info on the Oilers of Carlsbad as we were searching for more info on our club. He obliged with some info he had found. Thanks Gater!

I then realized that I might be able to help others as well. I have some old Banquet or season yearbooks from the Oilers, along with the Road Ramblers of San Diego, and the San Diego Roadster Club.

Are these clubs still around? Is there anyone interested in any info I might have in these little pages?

I seem to have alot of little info on some of these men, their cars, their clubs, their lives.

I'll share a little with you, and I'd be happy to help anyone searching for any info.

  4. Oilers stuff...

Love any info on drivers, cars, friends, pictures, if anyone out there has any.

Any info on the Dolphins? I'm looking for any info at all regarding Nelson Morris's '32 roadster #807B

  6. From the 1949 program, Oilers record holders.

  7. Man, the crazy thing is... While Chatting with Gater, I told him of the programs I had. I mentioned what a big help he might be for me... and I too was hoping I might be able to help him and others. I told him that I had a bunch of Dolphins info in my programs. But when I dug out the programs... it was all S.D. Roadster Club, and the Road Ramblers.

So for some reason I feel like I may have some info somewhere. Let me look.

  10. Man, I thought I picked a slow morning to drop some cool stuff on you guys. You must excuse me, it's getting hectic around here. Gotta run...

Hopefully we can all help each other with some pieces of these puzzles. Be back later!

  11. Red Halstead and "Red" Ashby, partners, and both from Escondido. Oilers record holders for third place in the 1951 Bonneville time trials.

  12. I forget if I mentioned above? I've had these programs for sometime, but they had been water damaged and most of the pages were stuck together until this morning when I steamed them open with my tea kettle. I found this super cool picture pressed to the back of a blank page. This was from the 1949 program.

Under the pic in the Program it reads...

"Oilers" 4th of July parade float at Oceanside, Ca. The Oilers in their second year of exsistance decided to enter a 4th of July parade float. Through the untiring efforts of Bob Steiger, Gene Shelby, Jim Nelson, and others, the float was considered a greater success then ever anticipated.

Sorry bout the pic, I'll need to replace it later with a scan...

The wagon on top reads hot rod 1849, while the 32 reads, hot rod 1949. Hysterical!

  13. Man, I just unearthed something neat. Gonna take me awhile to get it up here as I have to convey some old see through type.

I've got some stuff I'm doing in between passing this pile, while taking an occassional break and thumbing through it. Bare with me...

  14. I got nothing on Nelson Morris, looked pretty hard. Just mentions of Dolphins club points, duties, and a mention of Dan Busby's No. 321 getting some work done over at Whitey Clayton's Body shop.

    DD,

You'd asked me to look for Oilers info back to 1946 or 47 and I didn't locate anything on my first go round. As I was perusing through the October 19, 1947 SCTA Program, I came across this little tidbit on Jim Nelson. Looks like Jim snuck in late 47.

    DD,

As far as I can tell the Gaters were around from 1946 to 1949. My Pop seems to think they went into the early 50' but I haven't found their car club posted in any of the 50's SCTA programs that I've had my hands on.

I gotta get the stories from my Dad on tape. He has a lot of memories of our roadster back in those days. The dates are hard to nail down with him though. I try and pick at him now and then and he'll come up with a new story I hadn't heard before.

I am not expert, so I may be talking out my ass on some of this. The info I have is from my own observation.

Lots of Dolphin info. Seems that each club was assigned a group number each year. The Dolphin's CC were grouped in the 500 series in 1947. In 1948, from what I can tell of my 2 programs that I have, the Dolphin's ran the in the 300 series. In 1949 they ran the 200 series.

The series was not exclusive to each car club. For example, one club would run from 200-250 and another club could run from 290-310 depending on the number of members. It be interesting to know how the numbers were assigned to each club.

The Dolphins seemed to be a large group out of Long Beach, CA.

From your picture, I am not sure when the club was running the 800 series. I don't see Nelson's name in any of the rosters I have. From the sedan in the background, it was the 50's when that picture was taken.

Car clubs also ran Mojave, Russetta and SCTA. I am not certain that their numbers followed them from each organization.

You might try putting your question to the Society of Land Speed Historians.

Anything helps, thanks dude! You're more observant than I am on the sedan on the background, didn't notice that.

Nelson won that roadster in the 1948 Hot Rod exposition, this is the only pic I can find of it, other than HRM. Now I know that it still existed into the 50's. Thanks again!

Hey Mel...looked through my collection of old SCTA programs. No mention of the Oilers in the first program of 1948, April 21-25. I see them listed for the first time as a club in the June 5-6 program and they are listed only as "Oilers". Starting with the next program, July 17-18 they are listed as "Carlsbad Oilers" and continued to be listed that way in subsequent issues.....nothing earth shattering but some tid-bits I thought you'd be interested in...Gerry
