I know that 351 heads will bolt on to a 289 or 302 with the correct bolts. What I dont know is if I put 351 heads on my 289 to get the bigger valves and smaller chambers ,will I be able to use the tunnel ram from my 289 on the 351 heads. Thanks for any info.
Yes, A 351W ENGINE IS WIDER THAN A 289/302 ENGINE, BUT THE HEADS ARE ALIKE. I THINK YOU JUST HAVE TO BUY RINGS(SPACERS) THAT GO AROUND THE STOCK HEAD BOLTS, OR BUY SPECIAL HEAD BOLTS FOR THE APPLICATION. you can still run the 289/302 style intake.
Thanks guys.I was a little lost there at first with two different answers. I thought about just using one head to be safe you know split the difference.
Uh which 351 heads. Windsor or Cleavland? You will be alright if your buying or own Windsor heads but if you are bolting on Cleavland heads you'll either need a different intake or spacers.
So, that would suggest that 302 heads from '77 up are the same as 351 W heads and can be swapped to an earlier 289/302 given consideration of correct bolts? What about the chamber size, and if smaller, about how many points of compression increase if no other changes are made? Ray
As from what I can remember. When you use the 351w heads on the 289-302.I think you use the 351w intake I believe.
I installed a set of 289/302 Trick Flow (TW) heads on a '95 351W roller motor with a Edelbrock Vic jr. 351W intake. All I did was use a core drill to open up the headbolt holes for 1/2 inch studs. Killer combo!!
all post 76 are 69CC with same size valves. 289 had 54.5 or 49.2. Pre 77 351W had 60.4. What year 289?
Swapping 351 heads on a 289 will get bigger chambers, as George said. If you want to keep the high compression you are better off putting the larger valves in the 289 heads. The early 351 heads have an extra intake bolt in the water port that won't be used with the 289/302 intake, but it will fit and work just fine with 351 gaskets. Halfway down this page are some pictures of the differences; http://www.mustangsteve.com/intake.html
We had intake spacer plates and a valley plate on our 351 with a 302 tunnel ram. Edelbrock heads. Lippy
