You need a diode in the wire from the ignition switch to the alternator . I remember you saying wiring is a challenge, so at the risk of teaching you to suck eggs :D:D A diode is like a one way valve for power.

The wire from the ignition switch should also have some sort of resistor or a bulb in the line too to keep the voltage below that of the regulated output. An alternator light will do the job or an 8 ohm resistor.

  2. If you go way back in banger thread history, you will come across one of the founders of banger threaddom "heyitsnate".

he found one and had it all repaired. if he doesn't pop up and tell the story, I will.

ok- but the other day when I started it before it did not do that. I could put the key in the off position and it turned off.

I had to jump my battery today since I left the key on, does that have anything to do with it?

I don't think the jump start would have damaged anything...unless the alternator already has a diode built in to stop the back current , it is possible to have damaged a diode ......... but unusual just by jump starting .
I think more likely you started it and didn't rev it up, if so , the alternator may not have switched on and started charging...depends on your pulley sizes as to how many revs it takes..You can test that by just starting it , without revving it past idle ....then turn it off.
If it turns off OK then start it again and take it up to cruise revs for 5 - 10 seconds or so, and try again.
If as I suspect, it then won't turn off, just pull the coil lead off..... the low tension 12v wire from the ignition switch , and go put the diode in.
If your ignition switch has two separate terminals for the on position you can just run the alternator to one and the coil wire to the other. Otherwise you could put an "off" switch into the ignition circuit, if you hide it it could also double as a simple anti theft device..... :D

Yeah I didnt really rev. I just got is started, left it on for a couple of minutes and then tried shutting it off. I need to take it for another little cruise around the neighborhood I guess and really buid the charge then try it again.

I have duess set the timing on the banger, do I need to get the timing kit or will i be fine having set it by ear?

I am not running anything high compression or anything. Seems to run good, just wondering how precise I really need to be.

  7. If it cranks over easily you probably don't have too much advance. If it kicks back retard it until it just doesn't kick back. But if your are happy with it just throw your head back and drive!

  8. polecat,

Now that it's running, you need to bring your speedster down to Brad54's swap meet this Sat!!!

I am still getting used to driving something like this! It is so different. I still need to register it and get a real tag. That is about an hour drive in my Altima so I would have to leave today to get there by Saturday. I am still not 100% confident in its running ability. She and I have to learn each other a bit more before I am willing to go more than a few miles away.

Plus it is too damn cold to run more than 30mph in an open cockpit like mine!

I had this problem as well, it had me stumped and I am an electrician, (not auto). I found if you pull the wire of the alternator it would stop. I spoke to my local auto elec and he explained the problem which I thought was a faulty alternator. As you shut off the ignition the one wire to the charge light gets a residual current as the alternator winds down, if your charge light is more than a few watts it allows enough power to pass back through it to keep the coil alive which keeps the sparks coming. The cure is as posted above a diode in the line which I did, or a smaller wattage indicator lamp. Be careful with the smaller lamp however as if it is too small the alternator may not charge as it need some power for excitation, had this trouble in my boat.

just curious are you running the reccommended coil for the petronix, the wrong coil on an electronic set up or a bad coil can cause problems like those mentioned. have you tried a different coil?

    Thanks Bill

  14. I can't give you a dimension but mine just clears the wrench flats on a single lock lifter when it is on the heel of the lobe.

  15. Took the buggy for a spin yesterday and the valvetrain started talking to me. Ah the joys of driving a banger. ;^)

As always thanks Bill. Did you do any thing for the oil baffle that gets trimmed down? I will have to wait to trim the block until after I get my cam back from Jim Brierley. :D

I just looked at my B block and it does not have the oil baffle like the A but it still would be nice to know.

    Hi there banger brothers.

Not really only banger related but I know they most often show up in the banger threads. My latest find is a couple of Winfield carburetors. The two ni front hvae SR bowls and CC bodys. Then there is one more just like them but missing the air horn. The last two have S bowls, one with BB body and one with D. The D is missing the fuel inlet and air horn. But other then that they look complete.

I will probably try to trade for matching pairs and also I need to find an intake so I can put them on a banger. But the look good on the shelf too.

In case I hadn't proved it lately, I've made another "poor choice" and need an oil pan baffle or dipper tray or whateverits called. The one with the fins on the underneath.

PM me if you've got a spare you're willing to part with.

  23. Oof, Jimmy!

Looks like your cam has seen a few too many "fun" days as well...

    Hey fellas,

I thought you might enjoy a little banger p*rn. Dave41 snapped these and sent them to me to post on Moe's T Sprinter thread and after seeing the pics, I knew I needed to share them here too.

This is a tough little car, I'd love to have one like it!

Thanks for pointing out the timing tab - beats the wire one I made on my A.

I also like the gas cap gauge. I like it a lot.

  29. Took my car to March Meets yesterday. Was a hit fellas, lots of thumbs up from everybody when I was driving around and during fire ups for spectators lol. Was only 3 bangers present unfortunately and I was the only one to drive out to March Meets then the dirt track and lastly home late last night. No pics for ya as I was preoccupied with having a good time.

As soon as the rains here in Cali are gone I am gonna daily drive mine back and forth to work. I only get to drive it late in the afternoons to run errands after work as of right now. Drive em' and enjoy em' fellas. That is all happy motoring Banger Brethren.-Weeks

  30. Can anyone please tell me where I could find out about quarter mile times and et's for four banger dragsters?

We have started work on our one and we were curious to see what else had been achieved out there.
