I found a few threads that mention straight eights but nothing I am looking for, internet search came up with nothing. I am wanting to know anything about building up a straight eight. I mean head swaps( over head cams, maybe a pair off a v8?), piston swaps (stronger options), crank shafts, superchargers, turbos, multi-carb intakes, fuel injection. Anything.
im with you big roy.. btw your avatar? what is that kinda looks like the 46-48 dodge i have sitting in my garage.. btw i scored a mopar straight 8 and******* last fall..... its sitting in the corner of the garage awaiting a nice new home... hope to learn some from this thread.. i too have found very little especially on mopar straight 8s... however search hamb a lil bit more i have found some that have been blown and man do they look cool dunno how they ran but they good.. i remember reading somewhere that some race team took a chrysler airflow (iirc) and made it run 200ish mph with a straight 8 back in the 60s ......... wanna say i found that here on the hamb too.... ill share what i find as i go thru more sites....
Bonneville Salt Flats -The Power Of Bonneville The Lafferre & Walden entry is an***O/Vintage Gas Competition Coupe stuffed with a '40 Buick straight-eight. It's got custom forged pistons, stock 8.250-inch rods, a 44-inch-long crank on five main journals, and 356 ci (stock was 320 ci). The team has about 300 hours into porting the stock head, and they made headers and an intake with twin 500-cfm Holley two-barrels. It has 10.75:1 compression (that's with 0.270 inch milled off the head and block), a set of custom rockers from Rocker Arm Specialties, and an old Crane cam with about 270 degrees at 0.050. It makes 340 hp at 5,800 rpm, but it couldn't beat the team's own 154.245-mph record this time.
yeah i found one about a blown Chrysler in a desto airflow at Bonneville, but looking for more specific info like what kind of parts i can retro fit into one. by the way great find on the Chrysler straight 8 I ve been trying to find one for awhile now with no luck. the avatar if i remember right is a 46 Plymouth biz coupe I photo chopped and painted
yeah craigslist is my friend for finding deals.. i paid the guy $100 and he delivered the combo to me... and yeah that sounds right for the avatar thats exactly what im building in the garage
this is what I'm talking about pontiac,buick,packard,mopar,hudson, other companies? <object width="640" height="385"> <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/tDoA4HJNf-I&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></object>
I would hesitate to say the V8's are more powerful than Inline 8s. Don't forget that the supercharged Duesenbergs made 320 horsepower (some even 400,) when even the V16 Cadillac was pushing 170.
^^Dozier and Hegarty. I think it went ~140; the same engine went over 200, but in a streamliner. Here's the Airflow on a T-shirt:
hot rodded straight eight are cool. i love the sound. heres some u tube vids. <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Oqod79xCkHQ&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Oqod79xCkHQ&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object> <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/71QbhORKCb0&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/71QbhORKCb0&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
^ ya but I think the origional statement was sayin how you can get more power for less $$$ with say a sbc. But then you would have a sbc.
I may be able to help you, Teambuick.com has a whole forum on performance straight 8's. LOTS of knowledgeable guys on there have done some really neat stuff. I personally have been writing a little bit on porting straight 8 heads on that forum and am also going to be playing with a head on the flowbench soon. http://www.teambuick.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15714
John's salvage in Seguin Texas has four '52-53 327 Packard 8s and a '50 Buick 8. The motors are complete and in the original chassis.
Been pondering this for a while. Got a pontiac straight8 being machined for stockish rebuild right now, what could I do? Mill the head, light porting, better carb etc being done, anything else I should do ? BUT got another under the bench for a longerterm project, any suggestions, more time than money, especially here in UK, exchange rate plus shipping kills me. Anyone milled a brand new head, fabbed up an inlet ? Cheers guys.
Here's a tidbit from last year. Check out Salt Cat Racing on you-tube. A couple of video takes from the driver's seat on a 180 MPH run last year at Speed Week. The Buick straight 8 is alive and pretty damn torquey.
Buick Guy is one of those "knowledgeable" guys on teambuick.com doing some really neat stuff. Good to see ya Buick Guy
hey theres a guy on craigslist here in seattle wa that has a few older straight 8s http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/pts/1631096982.html from a 30s chrysler airflow... just thought id let ya know.. dunno how the price is havent really shopped for one.. but thought id tell u.. still lookingfor that other info for ya rob
I believe this was being built by a very knowedgable SCTA racer and the board ruled against it before the project was finished.
39cent, that was pretty cool got any more info on it? like if it requires any special modifications to the block or head?
Lets see. It's two four cylinder heads welded togeather to make one straight eight head with the block cut shorter and a deck that has bolt and water holes to work with this newer hemi head so I guess a new deck to fit. New rods and needs pistons to fit. One off cam blank as yet unground and you wonder if it needed any "Special Modifications". No. Not at all. Strictly a bolt on.
Just thought i'd ask, thanks for being an****. figured rods and pistons would be implied. No***** welding two 4cyl heads together isn't a major modification thanks for clearing that up for me, I meant if i was to buy that kit in the ad would the head have bolted to block or would the holes for the head bolts have to be relocated. A four cylinder cam wont work in a inline eight WOW your knowledge must be vastly Superior to most members of the Hamb. having a cam ground isn't a big deal if the right machinist is doing the job. just looking for a little more info on it
