Don't panic if you've seen these posted here before, about 100 pages ago. I did some Photoshop work on them to improve the color quality.

Thanks for the update, Ken. I look forward to seeing the restored cars.

As to the your last line, I was wondering why Charlie never returned for the Riverhead Tour Races once he started running for Ernie Wilsberg on the Tour. I though it was possibly that the Wilsberg's did not want to run the bull rings and they were just sticking to the bigger races. But it looks like there was more to it. Charlie would have been the hands down favorite no matter what he drove. At Riverhead, it didn't matter whether he started up front or in the back or if Evans or Cook or the other big names were there or if he drove on four wheels or three. They actually took that one away from him (when CJ went about the last 40 laps of 100 lap feature with a left front flat). What a wild one: the Jarzombek fans were cheering him on while the naysayers were calling for the black flag. I though he was alright when it was just smoking in the beginning, but once the sparks starting flying I though they would black flag him for sure. I'm sure CJ carved a groove or two in the turns at Riverhead with that left front rim that are still there till this day. i though Charlie had lapped the field before his flat. Harback and Sacks were the only once close, but Harback dropped out and Sacks got involved in an accident and Charlie lapped him. However, when Sacks eventualy got around the not so slow Jarzombek at the end of the race they said he was not unlapping himself but going ahead for the win. The scorers sorted it our if Charlie was giving the trophy and the checkered flag. As a Jarzombek fan I didn't agree with the call. However, I believe it was later on in that season that it went the other way and Ted Wesnofske was given the checkered flag at a 100 lap ROC qualifier at Freeport on a last lap past of a CJ car that lost its rear end gears only to find out from the scorers that the race had gone one lap too many and the win reverted back to Charlie after everyone went home. You win some you lose some.

I have a newsprint picture of the flat tire run in the 100 at Riverhead. As soon as tax season is over Bullfather and I get some scanning and posting tips from you, I'll put it up. I know...promises, promises.

    Sorry, back to work.

Now THAT was both an interesting & embarassing night. Charlies pony wheel was flat & soon the sparks were flying from it. O'Rourke wanted him black flagged -- I said no way, not while he's still in control & keeping a decent speed and it's safe. .. Hell, what a SHOW for the fans!!!!! Bob Lee was my/our starter & an aware guy and always looked to me &/or Ed Hawkins, before making a call like that.

No, we didn't take it away from him, as it was never really his.

Long story short as I can make it .. I forget if NASCAR was still using a flop clock or if they had moved onto a digital one by then, for extra distance races. Ilene Sall (NASCAR's scorer for extra distance shows) .. checked the individual car scorers cards (Each car had an individual scorer & they scored their own car using the flop/digital clock) & sent down word to me that Charlie was the winner. Mean while, Carmella Maskuliak (our Head Scorer for regular shows) was outside, but next to the press box, waving her arms wildly at me & I had no clue as to why and no way to find out.

As I handed Charlie the trophy he asked .. "Ken, are you sure? I thought Sacks won it" .. I said .. "No, Ilene Sall said that you did." .. Charlie very honestly said .. "I didn't think so, I thought Sacks got by me." .... The trophy presentation is over -- Charlie & everyone is back in the pits. The next feature is starting to roll out onto the track. Ilene & Carmella are now heatedly in conference. Word comes down from Ilene Sall .. "SORRY, I WAS WRONG!! Charlie didn't win, Sacks did!!" I then confirmed that this was now 100% right & that they now agreed. (Carmella, although she didn't have to, scored the race on her own .. then checked, double checked & checked again before she even started waving her arms at me. Carmella was a GRRRREAT scorer. Ilene was no slouch .. but it's a real task gathering the score cards of individual car scorers .. tallying & checking them all -- recapping it & getting the results and getting them correct .. all in a timely manner. Mistakes sometimes happen.

I QUICKLY sent someone running to get the trophy from Charlie (I knew he'd understand, as he already felt Sacks won) and to get Sacks back down to where I was .. then sent someone else on that first guys heels to see if Charlie would come down with the trophy & present it to Sacks .. which he unquestioningly & very graciously did. Charlie Jarzombek was a class guy!!!

Just scuffs on the track from that wheel .. but the sparks sure put on one hell of a SHOW!!!!! .... If I do say so myself .. a real bring 'em back again (the fans) type of a show .. that was tainted by the initial scoring error.

Yeah .. I'd love to see that picture again & am sure others would too. I think it was in Illustrated Speeway News .. probably a Bob Worthman photo.

Don't know that this old brain retained the full story .. but Harold Seaman relays that he lettered this car for Al DeAngelo & the two brothers that owned it and that he had so much fun with them while doing it, that he dragged out the job an extra day .. just to enjoy the extra time with them all!!!

This was a Richie Evans built car that Vinnie Morabito once owned and then was taken over & owned by Adam Dobrie. It "might" have been numbered 71 with Morabito & 26 with Dobrie, but I'm really fuzzy on that. (Harold knows what numbers it carried -- and I should remember too. Harold told me BUT I now am having a case of brain fade!!) There might also have been another owner in the mix?

Teddy Wesnofski and Joe Krukowsi are two of the chauffers that wheeled this machine before Al De Angelo.

    THANKS HAROLD!!!!

Just spoke to Marty Himes (The Himes Museum of Auto Racing Nostalgia .. here on Long Island, NY) and he advised me that the date for the Annual Show at the Historic Hallockville Farm -- Mattituck, Long Island, NY has been set.

The show will include antique cars, antique trucks, antique fire engines, antique tractors, antique industrial engines (such as the "hit & miss" ones used on farms & other applications) .. there even was some old military aircraft engines there .. and of course historical/nostalgia/antique RACE CARS of all sorts & from many eras.

Something else at that show (that I found fascinating) is the tractor pull contest that features real working farm tractors. The weight these everyday machines, that we pretty much take for granted, can pull is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING !!!!

If you have a race car that you'd like to show .. the guy to contact is Marty Himes. Drop me a Private Message & I'll give you his phone number (if you don't already have it).

The dates are Saturday & Sunday July 17th & 18th. MARK THEM ON YOUR CALENDAR.

It's a real fun and enjoyable way to spend a day or weekend in the country, to show your machine &/or just look around.

Even though they've been posted here before, I'll post just SOME things from last years show.

Thanks for posting the pictures and stories. I went to Freeport with my father in the early 80's and am looking to build models of some of the cars that raced there. If anyone has any pics or knows where to find them of Late Models and Bombers from that time it would be appreciated. I am also looking for a good pic of the Save Our Speedway stickers thay had at the end. I want to make a model of one of my dad's cars and he had a few of them on there.

    Thanks
    Wally

Ed Patnode car looks like another Jake Hafke car, 3 window with a painted vinyl top. He also built the Bob Stefanik car for the Czarnecki brothers, and he built cars for Leo Matte that Lecuyer and Membrino drove.
