I was surprised to find 3 brands of pistons in my 59 ab. The engine was hopped up many years ago with a 4 inch stroke and bored 1/8th over. All of the pistons are 3 ring aluminum. One was stamped inside 'Speedo Motive' with 'heat treated #28'. Six of the pistons had a 'S' inside a triangular shield with101B stamped inside with STD stamped on top. These pistons have two slots on the skirts. The big surprise was finding one piston was stamped 'Elgin' 102-3 inside, on the top it was stamped 3 5/16 1/8LC. What makes this piston unique is the heavy waffle shaped reinforcing underneath the top of the piston. This 'Elgin' piston had small holes drilled through the pin bosses. My questions for the group are did Elgin Cams also make pistons? What is the purpose of the holes in the pin bosses? Who made the pistons with the 'S' inside a triangular shield? Thanks for your input

The "S" inside the triangle is "Siv-o-lite" as I recall.

I have known Dema for some time and don't think he ever made flathead pistons.

  4. The holes in pin bosses would be to help lube the pin with splash or from the oil ring.

I had some pistons with block letter Eldebrock cast into the skirt. They had the waffle under the dome. They were also marked Jahns.

1/8LC means(I think!) 1/8 low crown to indicate use with a 4" Merc. crank.

I'm a little confused here! I believe that the 1/8LC is also a Merc piston but was not used until the 1949 models and would all ready be 3-3/16" bore and if used without a merc crank it would not raise high enough for the Ford crank.

Gee ! The front of my catalog is printed " SILV- O -LITE "

Also "S" in triangle could be "Sterling"
