so...i m at Fort Sill (Lawton), OK any car shows, cruise ins, junyards, etc?

Just wondering what there is to do here. Car stuff that is....shows, junk yards, anything out here?

Lawton isn't a big hot rod town. Mostly they want to look at your car and tell you how you ruined by not keeping it all original. There are however some really cool guys there and a couple of clubs. Get ahold of the service manager at the Dodge dealer, name's Tom. He is a good guy and builds cars right. He will know what's going on around the area. There are a bunch of little towns around you. Every one of them has some sort of "Day" Corn Cob Day, Water Melon Day, Finger in My Ear Day, etc. They all use the money to finance there volonteer fire dept or what ever and usually have a car shows. Won't be a lot of cars and very few really high quality cars. Still it's better then drinking over priced beer at the rip off bars right out side Gates 3 and 4. You could go to the automotive hobby shop and check the bullitin board. Are you getting training there? Ugly time of year to be in OK if you are being trained in some job that's done outside. Since most Field Artillery jobs are outside, try to stay warm and dry. I worked for the FA School 3 years as an NCO and then 23 years as a civilian, so say "Hey!" to everybody for me. OH yeah, the Cannoner, which is the fort paper, has a list of area events. Comes out weekly. Might help. Good Luck. Uh Ah.

You're close enough to go check out owens salvage in wellington,tx....flat top bob here on the hamb, his place is great! The last blast down in vernon,tx in august, just come south into texas...plenty of stuff just a few hours south

hit the race track south of town right on the highway on fri nights some good drag racing, and you are only about 65 miles from okc mustang etc... lots going on there too.. and lawton is real big on dirt car racing if you like the dirtheads..........

I was at Ft Sill in the mid-sixties - in that other war. At that time there was a dragstrip fairly close by. It may be long extinct but it's worth checking out. Good luck! And thanks for serving.

 

The old LA Dragway is closed. But they build a new one several years ago right off the interstate on the Faxon highway.

There is a pretty good swap meet the weekend of the the 27th of March at the Duncan Fairgrounds. It is at the south end of town by the airport. It doesn't rate with Decatur Texas or Pate Museum, but there are always bargains. Beville's salvage there in Lawton has a rather large collection of tri 5 Chevy's at the owner Billy's house. Most are survivors or really nice restored cars. The yard is on the south end of 2nd street where it curve's just south of Lee Blvd. It is salvage row for sure, but they don't have any bargains. Most have been there a really long time. The dirt track races will start up soon on Saturday night. The track has been open for 40 years by the same owner as the OKC fairgrounds speedway. Sprint car nights are the best. Be sure and check out Medicine Park and Mt. Scott.

 

And eat al least one Meers burger while you're in the area.

Ft Sill, Is "The Saddle Bar" with real saddles still there? Was in 59.

 

I think the Saddle is long gone. Building and all. I almost got my A** whouoped there by a butch lessie one time. Be careful who you wink at, she might have a girlfriend. I forgot about Meers burgers. Go hungry.

Cruisin for a cure car show in Henrietta Texas first Saturday in April. About 45 minutes south of Lawton, east of Wichita Falls.
