Anyone in the Midwest with a COE and large flat bed willing to rent out their truck for a stage at the Pileup?

Just figured I'd post my latest departure from reality, and the cab I would build if money was no object.

They would do some filming by our farm when I was a kid. (I lived at Hwy 7 and Hwy 50, Sunnydale Corners) The old Circle M studio was on Hwy 27. ( Cannonball, Forest Rangers and The Littlest Hobo were filmed there) My Mother, Sister and I had a walkon in the Sunnydale Resturant. I wish they would run it again.

Here's our '46 Ford Cabover. It has a 6.0 Litre Chevy engine on a shortened up 2002 Chevy 3/4 ton pick-up frame. Hope to fire it up soon!

Looking good Tom, welcome to the HAMB! I took a few pics of mine sitting on top the frame to send you. I'm cutting the frame horns off and planning the mounting of the cab. I got the pics you sent, and I can't wait to see the what's next! Jerry

What about the old Ford C-series trucks? Or the Dodge A COEs from the 60's?

    3 pictures from classiccoe.com website.

These would make cool motorhomes. Now I really have to start looking for one.

We are getting some progress on the 48 Ford Coe. We have been filling the door jamb seams & starting to round the corners. First we are starting with the lower right front.

We call this the Frankin corner look.

We managed to get some more progress on the 48 COE in today after getting back from the sand blast shop the first 5 are the first corner welded up & more corners being built. The last is the gas filler hole filled in.

Seeing how quickly Tom has been coming along on his truck has motivated me to make a little progress on getting my COE project started this week. I drug the Chevy dually chassis inside the shop and sat the cab on it to see what I need to do to mount it. I then used a sawsall to cut the front frame horns off and then sat the cab down on the frame. I left a small stub of the bottom of the frame horn to set the front of the cab on. Right now the cab floor is about 1" above the frame rails so that's about as low as it will go. To lower the truck more I'll have to go with drop spindles, shorter springs or lower a-arms The floor and bottom of the cab structure will need to be rebuilt and cleaned up from the butchering it got from one of the previous owners that had tried to mount it on a Dodge pickup chassis. I will also have to cut out the flat firewall they welded in and remove the brake pedal****embly and column mount they put in.

I am also considering a different powertain for it instead of the 500 Cadillac/Turbo 400/ GearVendors Overdrive I have for it. I've found a low mileage (30K) Chevy Vortec 8100 (8.1L) with an Allison 1000 6 speed trans with all the accessories that would fit within the frame rails. Throttle control is drive by wire which would be nice but I'm not sure about the shift setup which could be a problem if it is mechanical. The big down side to this engine is an aftermarket wiring harness costs over $1000 for it!

    Some questions that I have:

What is everyone is using for cushions for their cab mounts?

I would also like to find a GM steering box that will mount in the same place but have a better input (more vertical) angle for the steering column. Would Chevy Van, P30 or motorhome boxes work? I don't want to mount the column so straight up and down and I would like to use a very short steering column like an Ididit shorty style column and keep it more horizontal and out of the floor.

    Hey Jerry,

Good talking to you today. All I'm using for body mounts are the round mounts like you use on a flathead. I think they'd be more than substantial.

The truck looks great sitting on that BIG LONG frame :D

    Talk to you soon, Tom

Here's a pic of how I handled the steering problem on a 48 Chev COE I started putting together 12 years ago and sold in 02. The box was from a Chev van before they were vertical. The frame is a 78 Chev 3/4T. I inlet the frame an inch and tilted the box as much as possible while still using the original steering arm. I also had crush tubes in the frame. The steering column was a Chev van no key that I shortened about 14". As you can see in the pic there is a steering joint just above the box, there was also another one in the cab. Using two this way takes away the problem of too much angle. I use the same type of set-up in my cpe which has over 75,000 mi on it without any problem because of it. I read where you were wondering about the rear end. Have you ID'd it yet? If not check out what a Dana 70 looks like. Many of the duallys came with that rear end. They are heavy duty stuff. I have one in the 85 GMC dually (4.56)I have and also a spare(3.73) . Check here to ID the axle http://coloradok5.com/axleguide.shtml

That looks a lot like the box already in my 1974 crew cab dually frame. I think my Ford cab has less room in front and sits a little further forward than your Chevy did so I can't get the box tilted up enough to do it the way I want. It looks like I'll need to do some more time in the junkyard. I have even given some thought to mounting the steering column parallel to the box input shaft and join the two with a chain and sprocket set up but.......that could be a little scary.

What year/model van was that out of? Would that be prior to 1976 or so? I'd like the no key version column too. I'll go look for one and check it out. Thanks!

  30. Hi Phat rat
    I don't suppose that 3.73 rear is for sale is it ? is it a C30 3.73 ?

    Regards
    Bill
