OK, over a thousand visits to this thread. I hope they have all contacted their Assemblymen.

I read that whole list that I attached and could not figure out who the Assemblyman for "At your mom's house naked, CA" was.

Kirk I just called my assembly man Bill Berryhill and was impressed by his office people thanking me for my call and was told that if I come to the Monday the 22 meeting that I should stop their office if I need any thing
they also said that any plans to attend should be check in advanced because of the chance of a delay in the bill hearing, was told that Jeffries office would know about any delays..................:D

FYI HVSpeed is one of the guys working hardest to understand and deal with these types of legislation and how they affect us hot rodders.

Thanks for all the hard work!!!

For those who can attend, the hearing will be at...

    State Capitol Building Room 5128
corner of 11th and L Street
    Sacramento, 95814

Our bill should be heard between 2 and 3PM. Wear your club colors, we want to be noticed. These details seem to change by the minute, so I'll keep updating.

There's a caveat here gang, read the provisions of the bill:

"Vehicles, be inspected by stations authorized to perform referee
functions, for the purposes of determining the engine model-year used
in the vehicle or the vehicle model-year, and the emission control
    system application."

The way I understand it if you want to license a car with little/no smog equipment you'll need a block with an early sixties casting number.

Correct, but it would be a FAR better system that we have now. It doesn't affect cars with viable numbers, just kits (fiberglass Ts) or cars without numbers.

Yes, that is one way, but the way the current law is stated, you are allowed to designate the year of the car by EITHER the engine or the year the body most resembles.

Messages of support sent and calls made. Thanks for the heads up Kirk!!!!!

    .

  18. Correct. The ref will ask if you want to register to the year of the engine, or the year the body resembles. Strange policy, but I'll take it.

    Thanks KIRK!

Right on Kirk! Thanks for keeping your peepers peeled and leading the charge!!!

Going on Route66's caveat, any of you guys running 1998 and newer diesel trucks (or cars like a bio-diesel or whatever)? I ask because I just sold my 1983 Land Rover diesel, my big selling point was no smog ever (in California)... only to find out that the DMV and the powers-that-be are implementing a diesel smog check on all 1998 and newer diesel vehicles.

    * Please forgive me, I'm not trying to snatch this thread, I'm only pointing out the fact that maybe in your support letter/call for AB1740, you could mention your opposition to the new smog restrictions on diesel cars and trucks. After speaking with a few brothers in other states, some long and short haul truckers plus others in constructions with diesel trucks, no one has ever heard of "smogging" a diesel. I only bring this up because (think about it) if they go after those diesel vehicles that are polluting... our hot rods won't be far behind!

Just something to think about and consider. Again, I'm not trying to piggy-back this thread... I'll start a new one if I have to, I'm simply raising a point that was new to me and possibly important to all of us as the "man" goes after our babies.

Thanks again Kirk! for your valued effort!!!

Not trying to pick on diesels, but let's be realistic. Some kind of at least minimal standards for diesels is only fair and makes complete sense. Why should diesels deserve an unrestricted ride? You know as well as anyone, a lot of diesels, particularly older ones, pollute like crazy. Not only gases, but huge amounts of particulates that can be especially damaging. And yes, let's be 100% honest, even the bio-deisels aren't that great if they are kicking out huge clouds of smoke (particulates). I live in Berkeley, so I know all about how nice it is to drive behind an old Mercedes or Hippy School bus burning used french fry oil. And I use to live and have an office on major bus lines. I never opened my windows because I couldn't stand the diesel smoke coming in all the time. Ride behind an Amtrak bus and tell me they don't need some kind of regulation. At least the ones around here look like they are from the 70's or 80's and pollute the worst I have ever seen. Huge clouds of black smoke out of every single one of them. Live with that on half hour intervals every single day and you might appreciate at least a little regulation.

New diesels or ones in good shape can do a good job, but I don't think giving diesel owners a blank slate to run any crap they want no matter how polluting they are is even close to fair. Keep your diesels running well and properly and you won't have anything to worry about.

I just sent e-mails to each of the Assembly persons listed. I got some auto responses back which is fine. But, just and FYI, some indicated I should contact their public websites instead for a better accounting. Go to their sites and hit the contact button, fill in your info and your comment. They all seem to have the same formats, so must be a CA standard website thing. I didn't get any responses back yet from the others, but might be a good idea to do those through the websites as well instead of straight e-mail.

here is the note I wrote:

Dear Assemblyman XXX (don't forget to respectfully change to Assemblywoman if a she),

I would like to let you know I support the proposed AB 1740 legislation to remove the 500 limit restriction on specialty constructed vehicles. I personally enjoy the hobby of working on and driving older vehicles and know many others who do as well. California has a very proud and strong history and community of people building and creating not only automobiles but many other innovative and useful products that have helped keep CA on the leading edge and a role model to the world. Please help keep that traditional alive by allowing for our creativity to continue.

    Sincerely,
    Your Name and address

Just got off the phone with the Jeffries office. His helper Andrew, advised that FAXES are the best way to communicate your support. Emails and phone calls are ok but a hard copy is best. It should have your contact info and reasons you support the bill. He also said that many of the transportation groups are not happy with this bill. Namely the air regulatory folks, environmentalist etc. This is sure to be a hard fight !! If this is to become law, we will all have to fight to support this bill and Mr Jeffries.
