Nope, regular gold spray paint. The guys that built my 250 for me did mine.

    Here is a better picture:

You can see the gold paint on the exhaust manifold. I don't remember if they painted the intake... but any parts that get hot, paint gold and it will bake to a nice dark gray.

So the general consensus was my intake was not yet ready for final polishing. It still needs more work. Sanding is so hard.

Anyway, I got tired of waiting so I went ahead and installed the split exhaust manifold in the mean time. And as always, it was not without issues. First I had a bad vacuum leak at the center intake port. The alignment rings cut into the gasket a little. I couldn't get it to idle below about 1,200 rpm's.

So I pulled it all off and used some Indian Head gasket sealer on the gaskets and put it back on. I got the idle down to around 1,000 rpm's. That was still way too high, the manual calls for between 450 and 500 rpm's. It seems the throttle linkage (the vertical rod) was hitting the extra exhaust outlet on the way up and down. Also, the throttle return spring was in a funny way by one of the exhaust pipes.

Some buddies showed up to help out. We bent the throttle rod a little to clear the binding. Then we played with the idle speed screw and mixture screw for around 2 hours to get the rpm's down to around 750. That's as low as it will go without cutting out at idle. I think moving the throttle return spring will net a little lower idle.

Here's a pic of everything in place. You can also see the oil line installed...

It also turns out I had one of the most rare inline exhaust manifolds in existance.

I give you the only two piece split factory exhaust manifold in the world...

:D That's exactly how it came off the truck. Funny how that happens.

Now on to the results. The exhaust is LOUD! It sounds like it has a cam in it at idle. Like if a harley had sex with the devil. It is even louder when you mash the stink pedal. I had my buddy Ron (Bloody Knuckles) drive it around the block so I could hear it. The sound inside the truck is nice, outside it's like pure heaven. Or like the sound the apocolyptic horsemen would make if they drove chevys instead of horses. Or maybe the sound a black hole makes. It's hard to describe, but very very cool. I shot a quick video, but it in no way does justice to the amount of ruckus this truck now makes.

Here's a little quick vid of the idle. Again, justice has not been done to portray the real sound...

And here I am taking off for a red light. I'll get a video from outside the truck tomorrow, maybe that'll sound better.

So for now, I'm going to keep working on getting the intake smoothed out to get it ready for final polishing. Once that's done, it'll go on with the two Rochester B's. In the mean time and in the near future, I'll be working on taking careful measurements for the exhaust and gathering materials for that along with taking out a couple of leaf springs to get it sitting a little better. I forgot to mention I changed the engine oil and tranny gear oil. I still need to change the rear end gear oil and flush the coolant in the next few days to have all the fluids good to go. So that's the plans for the next little bit anyways.

Thanks for looking and thanks to Hot Damn!, Bloody Knuckles, and Los Gatos for coming over to help! You guys are the best!:D

I'm still working on the intake. I got my air cleaners today from a local buddy. They are cast aluminum. I'm gonna have to polish these now too. They're cool now, but should look killer after polishing.

    Anyway, here's a pic...

Love the fact that you had The Clash on your Radio, especially as the truck is a 'tribute' to your dad.

Looking good, and seems quite 'nippy' judging by the way it got up to 30mph....

Or is the Speedo wrong :)

That's funny about The Clash song. It's my favorite tune from them.

The speedo is right, it is pretty nippy. Before I learned it was a 261, I thought it was way too fast for a 235. It's almost too fast to be a 261 too, lol. :D Maybe it's been punched out?

    Cheers mate!

He has another pair of air cleaners, but he's keeping those. Make me an offer on the oil filter or trade me something cool. I'm looking for a stock 216 valve cover, some kind of cool 235 side cover, or who knows? :D

Too funny about the big hole in your intake!

    Get out there and polish!

Are you the one that cast the air cleaners?

Love The Clash! And I am working on polishing. I'm taking a little break from the intake and started working on the air cleaners tonight.

Yesterday, I changed the gear oil in the rear diff. They gave me the wrong gasket twice at the parts place. I finally got tired of that mess and made my own. I must've done ok, no leaks so far! Just flushing the coolant system is left to take care of all the fluids in the truck. I've already got everything, just waiting on the next day with no rain.

The rest of my heater parts came today. So I can get started on that. I'll need to clean up and paint the box and it should be good to go.

So basically, I've got a bunch to do. :D

Actually, it's Franke. And Franke couldn't carry FAY's (a.k.a. Fuck All Y'all, a.k.a. King Of Trucks) jock strap. King Of Trucks will ass rape Franke and force that truck to make sammiches and fetch beers.:D

In all seriousness, Franke is a super nice truck. For sure one of my top three Task Force trucks on the hamb. It feels weird to like it so much, it's not the "nicest" ("showiest") truck around. But there's just something about it. You can't quite put your finger on one particular thing, kind of like the sum of all parts. The original paint with it's imperfections and real deal patina (not rust), the color, the 55 year old real shop lettering, the very unique dash (it came factory with no radio hole and only two knobs), the stance, the wheels and tires. It's just perfect. I hope Dustin doesn't change it. I can't wait for it to get here so I can check out that front suspension.

It was 3wLarry's '56 Chevy truck, named Franke after the construction company's name painted on it back when it was new. It is a killer, killer truck. Documentation all the way back to new. Special ordered truck, factory smooth dash with no radio hole and only a headlight and choke knob. Original paint and original door lettering. Killer stance with a straight axle up front. Definately not the shiniest or prettiest truck out there, but perfect in every way nontheless. My buddy Dustin (sin ticket) just bought it and it's on it's way to NC.

    Here's the for sale thread...

I don't know, Franke looks like the King Of Truck dude....this side of the Mississippi at least. You polish that intake all you want, that 350 looks killer in that engine bay. And don't tell me I didn't give you a chance when I offered up that SBC with the Corvette Valve covers. We're not going to even hear that Wet Fart your truck produces over that rumble of the true King Of Trucks....FRANKE!!!

Hahahaha...just messing with you. Built Not bought right???? But seriously, you better call a few of those Japanese guys your rave about to come give your truck a swift kick in that ass and hope some panel paint is left in the aftermath.

I think that was part of your "rare" split exhaust that it shat out not a 350.

I like your thread. It reminds me of when I started building my 56 Trocka. The best part was going for a ride when I got something new added. Here is a couple before primer and Blue primered picts to help motivate....Best wishes and keep at it...

I love your truck! I saved some pics of your truck in blue too a while back. It's a good look, love the fog lights! Do you have any other pics? And how about a better pic of that gold color? Do you know the name of the gold? I dig it! Thanks!

Just read the whole thread... sounds like you are having fun! If you go to a triple carb manifold, also consider adding a third exhaust pipe. On your manifold there is a center dump, and one off to one side, and the other side looks lonely. With three carbs, the three exhaust dumps would look just right.

I'm always having fun! And thanks for checking out my jibber jabber. :D

I've never heard of an inline exhaust split three ways. It's a six cylinder that has three intake ports and four exhaust ports. Splitting the exhaust 2 and 2 makes a sound unlike anything else. Think of a loud chevy v8 that is missing on three cylinders.

Yeah, I'd never heard of it either :) - that's why I thought of it. I think it would look tits, but not sure how practical it would be. Since you are going partly for show, partly for go, I thought you might consider it. Learn to weld on cast iron, all that good stuff :D.

Currently, I figure the gasses from the front two-and-a-half ports go to the center pipe, and the back one-and-a-half go to the back pipe. Not actually restricted much, but not balanced either. With three pipes, each would get one-third of the exhaust gasses. And there is the WTF factor of having three exhaust pipes coming out the back which would be fun too.

Three pipes out the back would be a WTF? for sure! I'm not sure what it would do to flow?

Also, time for another quick update. I got my coolant flushed today. Suprisingly, it was very straight forward and uneventful. Finally, a one hour project that didn't take a week. I'm kind of scared, lol. :D

In addition to the continued polishing, next on the agenda is getting my heater parts cleaned up and painted and then installed. Also, I'll be removing a couple of leaves out of the springs to get the truck down a little. Stay tuned...
