Collecting Licence Plates anyone ?

oregon dmv is a bunch of asses, i just bought a set of the new pacific wonderland for my 56 chevy, mainly because they would not allow me to run my original 56 plates unless i ran them as special interest, and i didnt want to have the stupid looking tree plates,

 

I can't wait till Plate Peddler sees this thread. that brother of mine has some crazy rare wyoming plates. and others of equal importance

 

i am looking for some ohio 1964 and 1973 motorcycle plates if anybody has them for sale.

 

Tommy, what is a YOM plate? That is a cool plate.

There is trick a to running these plates, but that one won't work.

 

I don't really collect 'em, I use 'em! Massachusetts allows YOM plates on collector-type cars and hot rods.

My '35 woodie has a nice set of green 1935 MA plates plus a Cat Island, Bahamas plate just in case we ferry her over for vacation!

My nailhead deuce build has a hard-to-find 4 digit MA plate.

 

I have non of these and want all of them good pics everyone.

 

Year Of Manufacture. In many states you can run plates that were issued in the year that the car was made. One of the first thing I do when I get a new car is get a set of plates that can be used this way.

 

I just got a custom plate with the same numbers as my 57 plates and run the old ones with the new ones in the glove box. That's what the guy at the DMV told me to do if i didn't want the YOM registration. the only downside is you have to have 2 plates

 

Found my pictures. The single plate is from Norway and is about 1/8" thick. The '31 plate and topper are on the front of my Model A. The AAA Club is from a township of about 1500 people that I live in-can't imagine how many members it ever had.

so - some days a guy gets a little lucky...bought a house down the street from where I worked from highschool until 1979...after they tore down a house on the walk home on day...I cut though the yard and stopped at the garage...looked in and shiiii...couldn't get back with a hammer fast enough...he had plate pairs from 1950 up to about 1970...will post later as they are still boxed at the moment...have a 1964 motorcycle plate thats kinda special....to me....

 

Seem that Arkansas had a banner year in 32 plates. I've ran across several large finds of them. Once came across a small building that used 32 Arkansas plates for shingles. They were in numerical order mostly.

 

seems like every time someone see's a building shingled in license plates it 1932 vintage. I have heard the same story but from California and Georgia

 

I don't have very many, but these are my favorite so far.

 

I have a set of my grandfather's Illinois plates. The same number- they issued a new plate each year, rather than tags- from 1948 (as I recall, I might be off) through 'til he passed in '85. Which, also if I recall, was about the same time Illinois switched over to tags anyway.

Every year except the one year they lived in California, and I have those plates too- '63, I think.

Not only that, but I have some of the little key-fob miniature plates that went with them- same number. I can't recall how those came about, if the DMV issued 'em or what, though I think I recall it was something about a local Rotary type club thing.

Have town plates like Hutchinson is a Buick town
Have school plates like Hurtsboro Red Foxes
Have 50th presidental plate

I only have one old plate that I run on my car. Funny thing is that they didn't even check to make sure it was a legit tag. Seems one could get a reproduction to say whatever they want and run it in NC.

 

I can't find the photo, but a friend found a barn in New York that was "shingled" with N.Y. plates that the guy would get from the DMV at the end of the year. All unussued plates from the 1930's, that he took the time to nail up in order. Not much value in half rotted plates.

Here's what I could find, I have since, gathered them all together. Plenty more, but most all from the mid 19-eighties.
The MD 51 plates were on my 51 Chevy P/U, the other were here on the farm, tucked into the barn here & there. BTW the VA 1972 plates look almost new from behind?

 

I have a complete set of bicentennial plates from 1976. Would like to work on a Stae Anniversary Plate collection from the states that did a special anniversary plate.

 

Great thread! I've been collecting Alabama stuff for several years now and here are a few of my favorites.

Here's the cycle collection that I've been working on for about 10 years now. This is one run that'll probably never be complete.


Some low numbered stuff I've managed to accumulate over the years.


I really like Model A year stuff, so here's a partial run of 1931 types and a couple unusual 1929's. One's a sample and the other is a dealer plate.

I'm tring to collect plates for all states for 1940. Doing pretty good but seem to be stuck on the last few. Any helpers out there. Need not be premo plates. Short Alabama, Alaska, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, and S Carolina.

 

Here's a few of my more interesting ones. I love the '57 over size truck one!
