I just saw the show pickers for the first time, great show, How did he get that job?!!!! gets to crawl around junkyards and old buildings and look for cool stuff all day, and a TV show on top of it!! anyone see this? the one person who has an entire garage full of restored Crosleys, and a yard full of cool stuff. Or the Old woman they bought some stuff from who has the Nash Metropolitan thats been stored in the building since 68? It was gorgeous, probably a couple of months to bring it back to nearly new. Finally a show for the Hamb Crowd, These guys were really enjoying looking for this stuff and were in it for more then the money, It was obvious they loved what they were doing. :) not s**** guys by any means, they looking for old cool stuff to save.

I about dropped my drink when I saw the inside of that Nash, I wish I could have grabbed by by the lapels and yelled BUY IT!! The old lady probably would have just wanted to see someone who would have wanted it. there were a lot of old cars in there if you watched every second, if you blinked you would miss something. And the Lincoln sign that got saved from being thrown in the crusher!!

I also like this show. I dont watch much TV. But this is one to watch for me. I heard these guys on the radio , that is how I found out about the show. And the DJ asked about china and stuff like that. And the dude on the show. Said that they dont look for antiques. They look for Mantiques. Stuff like bikes , signs , cars and such. So I had to watch.

I agree with lostforawhile when he said "finally a show for the HAMB crowd"

Only thing I am worried about is , I think it is going to "Barrett-Jackson" prices on junk that is hard to buy from people anyway. The way that they show what it was bought for and what the guys on the show got for it.

That wasn't a Nash. It was a Hudson.

Cool show.......Anybody can do it. I have been doing the Antique business for many years and have been buying stuff like that (and selling) for years. Anyone can do it, just go out and start looking and knocking on some doors. Or, hit flea markets, swap meets, garage sales, and start buying !

I just got this HUGE old Coke sign last month for $50, I was going to sell but decided it needed to be on the wall in my garage instead.

I think it's "Pawn Stars" about that Vegas pawn shop somebody mentioned.

And American Pickers? Great show, although a bit dramatic in order to garner interest and watchers. They're intentionally vague about exactly where the spots are that they visit. Could you imagine being somebody like that tunnel rat Ron or the guy with all the anti govt signs and the '39 Mopar having your location identified to the world, only to find a couple hundred "pickers" waiting in your driveway next morning after the show aired  ??

I noticed they're based in Iowa but travel elsewhere - didn't they hit Pennsylvania, Maryland and some of New England recently?

As others said - THEY'RE OUT THERE! Places with piles and oodles of junk stashes. Just gotta get yerself a tank full of gas, a pickup or trailer - an updated tet**** shot , maybe a GPS, and a friendly demeanor - then hit the road! Springtime in Michigan is the best time for it.

Best part is when the sellers put the screws to the two pickers. They can't be making much money once you total their expences, TV bucks not counted.

Pickers and Pawn Stars, two of my favorites. You get a real life idea of what stuff is worth and learn a little history as well. I have a few friends that have been doing that for years, buying mostly paintings and such. Once in a while their score is huge but you gotta keep hitting it early and often.

I also watch the show and like it. But I kinda live that life myself driving around in a big box truck stopping and buying stuff from folks along the road. Sometimes my pal Cuzzindeke goes with me on a road trip. We are American Pickers too. But I would never feel good about talking about my profit or loss on TV or any other forum. But it is a fun hobby.

Seems to me that shows like that and the interweb serve only to drive the prices of old stuff up and up. Buy low, sell high becomes buy high, sell a little higher. I may be wrong but, what do you folks in the antique/collectable business think? It is obvious what it has done to the car/truck market. We all see those ads for a complete basket case, rusted hulk: "this is a rare (whatever)- these sell for $30,000 when restored". Then they ask way too much with out a clue what it costs to restore said hulk.

As my Granddaddy Addams use to say,," Television will never be more entertaining than corn liquor."

I know he made it,drank it and sold it,,and I gotta admit he was real entertaining. :D HRP

It's funny how they make it all "feel good", when these guys are just gonna sell the stuff. I've dealt with this for ever and ever, my mother is an antique dealer, has been for longer than I've been alive. I'm glad some of the sellers seem to see through it. If these guys were collectors I'd feel a little bit better about it.

I do find it entertaining as well as Pawn Stars, but both aren't quite reality.

My buddy ran into someone who was on Pawn Stars. The item they took in was real but they were an Actor sent in for the person who owned the item. I guess sometimes people don't want to be on TV so they have hired actors take it in. Also, some items are "invited" onto the show even thought they know they are not going to buy it. Also, when you watch Pawn Stars, sometimes it shows the place being very crowded yet when someone is selling something, there is not usually anyone there. I gather that they shoot a couple days a week and the rest of the time it is a regular pawn shop. I like the show though.......I may swing over there when I am in town for Viva. As for American Pickers, I watch it but to me it is just ok. I like to see some of the stuff they get but some is no better than the stuff I come up with at flea markets or antique auctions.

I'm kind of a #'s man ,we ran the numbers on on pawn stars and pickers with the info we had and found out they are probably bogus.
That being said,it is put on tv for entertainment. Like the bike show where the old man and the kids take parts off the shelf and ***emble them into a theme bike, call it fabrication and then state " weve never done anything like this before" when in fact they do it every week.
The problem with pickers is ,you are there ,the barn is stuffed with ****,buy it all and load it in a semi and sort it at home. Driving 1100 miles to buy 2 items doesn't work.
I prefer Jerry Springer, now thats good tv.

  28. I know this thread will probably get shut down soon, but I wanted it noted that I would like to punch both of those pickers in the face.

I personally just love how much of what they buy is later "valued" higher but very few is actually sold... it gives the impression that they make a good profit on the stuff they buy but reality seems to differ.
