Cycle Way to Pasadena from L.A. in the 1880's to 90's. Toll booth on path. Great idea today to have paths like that, gets them off the road, much safer.

Had some LA River racing earlier in the thread. Found some more 1957.

Life magazine archives had the LA River shots marked "Santa Ana" in with the Santa Ana stuff. Also in the same batch were these. Guessing they're LA River racing related.

Although I see the "San Francisco" jacket. Maybe they came down to show off.

Helps explain why the cartoon truck drivers were always Brutus mooses!
Always knew it was because of manual steering, but never realized it was that along with solid tires!

The Powell factory made the Powell pick up truck, sport wagon from reconditioned parts in the early 50's. They used 41 Chrysler frames, Plymouth flathead 6's, and a host of other junk yard parts to produce a new truck. I remember KTLA channel 5 in L.A. had a program called City At Night where they visited different companies all over L.A. (early day T.V.) and one night they toured the Powell plant.

I remember those trucks, they were uglier than a sack full of weasel rectums.

    Actually...

The area now known as Los Angeles County has been continuously occupied by several native American nations since prehistory.

The bulk of Los Angeles city was occupied by the Tongva Nation.

Along the Pacific coast the Chumash Nation occupied what is now Malibu north to San Luis Obispo County.

The Tataviam Nation occupied the northern San Fernando Valley

After living here for all of my 20 years, this was my first earthquake, and it was a big one. I was still living with my folks and at 6AM when it hit, was still in bed. Within seconds I was showered with empty Coors beer cans that I had stacked into a pyramid over the bed headboard (classy!).
    What an idiot...
I didn't experience another one until 1987 (Whittier) then 1991 (Sierra Madre) and then 1994 (Northridge)......I've felt dozens inbetween, but nothing to write home about....I can't stand 'em...give me the creeps...

those hills sure do resemble the ones overlooking Golden Gate Park in SF.... Sutro Tower wasnt built until the early 70's, it is possible......

Santa Ana is flat... cant recall seeing hills that high!!

mazooma - like the earthquake this morning... woke me up and couldnt go back to sleep... got some garage time before work though. :)
Loma Prieta was my first big quake.... live in California long enough and youre bound to get a big one.

    Although.....

Special Ed seems to be talking about the city's name vs. those who settled here before the Spaniards. I sometimes wonder what it looked like before settlers.

Anyone know if the Casinos off the 710 and 91 fwy's are Indian owned/operated?
