1953 Control towers at new department stores, with electric signals directing shoppers where to park. Los Angeles 1953
The smog in the 1950's was bad. We burned our trash in an incinerator in the backyard along with thousands of other families throughout the area. There were no controls on anything and we all took advantage of that lack of controls until we had just about ruined living here. We had days when we were not allowed to go to recess to play because of the smog. On the evening news weather report they would always include the air quality reports along with the temperatures and forecasts. Smog "alerts" they were called. This was a city intent on killing itself with it's excesses until it became unbearable and everyone had to come to grips with it. Today we no longer have smog reports and you can see the San Gabriel Mountains year-round. Blue skies again today... <table cl***="weatherBox" border="0"><tbody><tr><td cl***="weatherHead">Weather:</td><td align="center" width="10"></td><td cl***="weatherContent">PASADENA, CA | Now: 80ºF | High: 83ºF | </td></tr></tbody></table>
Doug, I drove by the beach this morning here in north San Diego County, and could see snow atop the San Gabriel mountains in the distance clear as a bell! What is that 100 to 125 miles away? I was astounded at the clarity today!

OK so I cheated a little. You guys are too sharp to miss this, so I'll go ahead and fess up. The last pic is Pomona, not Lakewood, but it's the same year and it fit so well.
