The one on the top is Chrisman's built in 1954 and the one on the bottom is Pierson Brothers built in 1949. They are BOTH real hot rods AND real ICONS.

I knew i would get some responses from my post, but seriously the first time i ever saw the brown one was here on the HAMB. The other has a paint scheme that looks like the so cal belly tank, the brown one looks bad ass.

Would the first rear engine SWAMP RAT be iconic?

You've got that right. I'd love to have a Deuce five-window. I can see it now, painted black and channeled with a Pontiac 389, Raiders, and WWW.

My buddies '32, which was rodded in the 50's, has the bobbed fenders and a chopped grill shell....

    No. Just ugly.

FWIW. The Chrisman coupe (AKA "The Brown One") is rear engined. If you want an "iconic" rear engined dragster I think the Smokin' White Owl" would take those honors.

Seeing American Graffiti is probably the main reason i got into Hot Rods. i had heard there was "some cool old cars" in it so i rented the DVD.
I agree the chopped grill looks ugly, and the car is not even 100% period correct early 60's, but i LOVE that car. i still think it's extremely cool. i don't know how to say this, but there's something just so "right" about the overall look of the car, that makes it so awesome despite it's faults.

  9. Bwahahaha.. This is the funniest thread I've ever spent 15 minutes reading.

Guys not knowing what the Piersn Bros and Chrisman coupes are, guys arguing over what was right or what was wrong for a hot rod, back in either 62 when it was set, or the 70s when it was made. Bwahaha

just cos it was used in the movie, what makes u think lucas was trying to influence anyone in thinking that the car was the most accurate representation of the ultimate most period perfect hot rod for 1962??

Despite the fact that Milner threads are the HAMB's version of a menstrual cycle, I still love reading them.

I think the moment I really fell for the Coupe, or maybe what it represents was when Milner had to kind of nurse it over the curb to get it out on the strip. I don't know why, maybe because it was just short of street legal.

  12. That car looks better at night...from a distance. The mystic of a dark night and a lurking renegade hot rod and driver looking for its next drag race...The headlights glowing and the headers glistening hints that there is a bad ass car behind the lit-up headlamps. That is what I think is the appeal of that car...and cars like it... to a lot of people including me. Attitude IS everything.

Because Lucas is anal retentive when it comes to detail. He's got a huge case of OCD.

Even O.J. thinks im an idiot because i dont recognize two 50's built lakes cars.

How young does a guy have to be for it to be allright to not know of these fine rides,35,30,25?

How many HAMB members will admit that they have never seen pics of these cars or atleast dont know the names of the owner/builders?

  19.

Takes a strong man to admit that :D

It's not a case of your age but rather your lack of knowledge. If you are young, (or just new to the hobby) and smart enough to realize that you don't know a lot about our history, then I would think that when some listed these as ICONIC (which they most definitely are) that you might have done a little searching before making a statement that opens you up to ridicule (which is what happened). If he had been wrong you could have posted as much, but since he was right, you could have learned something.

personally, I think that they were building the car and all they could find was that sectioned grill shell, they probably had to scramble to get the car together and "fuck it that grill will do" I think the car is 95 percent period correct to 1962 other than maybe the color scheme and the grill shell. Its got bias plys, chrome reverses, and 4 dueces...bitchen.

Age is knowledge! If you go back 40 years, the majority of car nuts didn't care about 50's lake racers or Hot Rods or Customs. They had GTOs, Camaros, Mustangs, Chargers etc.....etc..... and aside from their heydays in the 50's, those "ICONIC" lake racers were pretty much non-existent in car magazines in the 70s. Mr Lucas decided to make a movie based on his experience growing up in NOCAL (someone in SOCAL would have had a different experince in that same era, as well as someone from say New York) and because of that movie, we welcomed back into our arms those long lost Rods and Customs of the 50s and early 60s. And kids today can experience first hand that long ago era.:D

I just turned 30 and I knew about these cars. Hell,I remember seeing the Chrisman Coupe for sale on eBay and asking myself who would be crazy enough to sell it,then I bookmarked and watched the auction every day until it ended.

Your girlfriend is a dog. mine is a fox...who is right? Your girlfriend can't get changes to look like mine as she would be a clone....Please get over yourselves... personally I like the chopped rad with the highboy look.... different, it works and your girlfriend has an overbite which works for you but not for me. The first guy to chop atop was probably thought of not being cool...same for channeling, sectioning.....you get the point. If had the $$ I'd clone it just cause .... well cause.

  29. I know this is an old post but i don't recall reading it before. This is almost poetic, man. You're right, that's a big part of the appeal.
