This feature was from the Jan 1990 issue of Custom Vans & Trucks I have photos of it elsewhere, but this magazine was easier to find.
1926,made in Canada for export te Australia, lived for 65-70 years in Australia before coming to England for about 12 years, now resides in Ireland..
Technically it's a pickup Tin Lizzy, there were steep tariffs on complete vehicles and chassis designed to foster the local industry so it's more likely it would have been assembled in Australia with a percentage of local content required to avoid the tax.
are few are left mate- the old man has two of these (NFS)- one an anglia/pop and the other a prefect- prefect has diffrent grille, gaurds and bonnet, both sitting waiting to be done up. There are alot of utes still around, i'm out bush, in a farming area and i find more utes than anything else. Also alot of the reason why the pre 34 cars where cut down into utes was because of fuel rationing during the war- if you had a utility you got more fuel, so alot of the coupes /tourers and roadsters where cut down, some well done others with axes! I must say thats utes on a everyday use level, are great- i've got a 97 holden vs ute as a daily and the amount of stuff i can cart home is surprising. they tray is as wide as a wellbody- but deeper at the front where it indents into the cab, so the carrying capacity compared to that and a pickup is huge- also means less body pannels as it has no protuding gaurds. also because of the way that a ute is mate- all of the new ones 60+ as far as i know- holden (gm) and ford are chassis-less as the tray is part of the body and forms part of the sub structure. - okay i'll shutup now- Hey ksk has ferret still got that ute body in the pic? wouldn't mind the grille- i'd find something to put it on!
Hey how did I miss this thread! That is my 1939 Plymouth Coupe Ute. If you look very closely you will see my 1939 Plymouth 3 window coupe directly behind it (also unique to Australia and similar in shape to a 39/40 Willys coupe!) and my old 59 Chev as well. I still have both Plymouths and will be building the coupe for my daughter in the next few years. I also have an extensive photo collection of Aussie coupe utes and Roadster utes and Roadster trucks. I loved the 40 Ford Roadster trucks we had! I could share some pics if people are interested. What would you like to see?
Always love to see more UTE pics. Also that 3-window is neat because it is a body style specific to OZ
Will dig out some more ute pics then and see if I can post them! The Ozzie built (TJR) 1939 Plymouths and Dodges shared the same body for the 3 window coupe and 3 window coupe ute to the B pillar. Only the quarters are different. Here is another coupe the same as mine (most will know it!) Some more ute pics coming soon!
!939 Ford Deluxe ute A Fargo ute! 1946 Chev one tonne ute (built on the Commercial chasis rather than the passenger one!) Ford Mainline ute 1938 Standard Ford ute My personal Favourite is the 1940 Ford Deluxe Ute!!!! Would love one to match my coupe! Ford and Chevy Coupe utes together! Rare 1936 Ford Roadster ute, these are gorgeous! And a 1936 Ford Coupe ute to compare it to! This one is a 1961 Holden ute with some mild body mods that look 'factory'. The factory never used these rear lights in the ute, only on the sedans and wagons. Another Holden coupe ute showing what the rear lights look like from the factory! That is our old Caddy and Triumph next to it. Another 1961 Holden ute 1948 Popular (Anglia) Coupe ute, will dig out some bigger and better pics of this one. I started building it but it was finished by someone else. Thats a teaser, more if you want them. Have some other unique Oz pics also, slopers etc.
Yep, I really should wear my glasses when I post! You are quite correct, 46 and 48 Ford? Will find some more Chevs to post later!
Okay, some more, will make sure I look properly this time! They are on their way there mate so keep an eye out for them. But from what I hear they have to be detuned a tad to comply with something. Also if somone wants a 47 Chev Ute I know a guy who might still have it for sale. It has had some work done and all ok work to, so if you want one I can still find out for you.
Here are some pix of the new Ford ute.And a 55 Chevy and I don't what the last one is.I wanted to bring home the new Holden ute.We were staying with friends in Mosman, and a neighbor had one.I think they come with a vette engine.Sounded so nice!

The Willys is a Mitchell bodied ute which used passenger car doors. Other Willys utes of the era were made in different body configurations by T.J. Richards - five window and Holden's the latter being based on their coupe body. Willys roadster utes were also made in this 1937 bodystyle by both TJR top and Hope Body Builders bottom. The Hope body used removable windshield posts while the TJR posts were fixed, the body being based on their roadster and Tourer.
Had a couple of those '56 Mainline utes, one had a rear seat like a club coupe, very handy! Would still like another one if it came up.
Last one looks to me like a EK Holden ute - but then I may be mistaken re the lettering but it IS a Holden.
