...spray over a smooth laquer finish without stripping it off?can i seal the laquer with poly primer? This is my sons car,and after noticing some discoloration on the roof he has decided to go with a lighter shade on top,but he does not want to go with laquer paint again, wants to go with two stage. What do u say fellas?
Bad Idea. Either use lacquer again or strip it down. Or somebody you know is going to say I told you so.
strip it down or you will be redoing it again soon, then it will be twice as much work. i paint for a living and i have fixed jobs that people have just primed over lacquer.
Sand it down with 400 and use an enamel paint ,You can do Enamel over laquer ,Newer paint will not work .Newer paint meaning urethane .Enamel is your only option ,I prefer Centari ,
Lacquer will eventually "check" (micro cracks), whether under new paint or not...strip it off or run it as is... R-
Something that might work is using a barrier coat. Although I wouldn't on that large of an area and expect it to last there are a few products I know of that make a good barrier, RM vp126 is a UV primer, limco h1000, RM DP100 and glasurit 76-71(I think thats the right p#) are all waterborn primers that would also work as a barrier coat. An option, not a cheap one and I question the durability on that large of an area. Ultimately I think those products are great but its like building a house on a swamp.
Hey David, This is a little like pullin' on the devil's tail, one day you're gonna have to pay! "If" the lacquer isn't failing, but only discoloured, you could seal it with epoxy, and topcoat with an enamel. Keep in mind that the roof of a vehicle gets very hot, expands then contracts as it cools. Long term, that's asking alot of that lacquer coat ,beneith a sealer and enamel colourcoat, to serve as a good foundation for the paint job. I'd reshoot it in lacquer, in the darker shade! No different paint product issues, and it will blend well and probably be much cheaper than the epoxy/enamel route. " Humpty Dumpty was pushed"
