  1. Hey Mike.

What is the side chrome on your Merc?
    Is it original Merc?

It is original Merc slightly modified. Typical "'50's" style modification. What that means is it was very common to run the stock pieces on the rear quarter and door. But you changed the piece on your front fender so there were no Mercury words on the trim. You get a rear quarter piece of trim from the opposite side, shorten it, and put that on your front fender.

Here is a pic before I molded the front end, it shows the front trim piece the best.

Beautiful! Was that wheel restored by Dennis Crook in San Diego? Did he also do the horn button?

  4. GReat looking merc!!!!! It sure is NICE to see a 51 with a 51 rear window. This is the only window for a 51 merc custom in my opinion.

Thanks everyone for the compliments. IMHO the trick to using the 51 backglass is it has to be set low, as close to the beltline trim as possible.

    Lifestylz,
I found some more pics of other Mercs that used the swapped side trim trick to eliminate the Mercury lettering.

  6. Yes it was a pretty common thing to do with the trim back in the day.Even the Wally Welch merc did it as well. I like the way it looks but I love stock mercs and since I left the stock bumpers and beltline on my car to show the beauty of mercury I decided to leave the mercury lettering on there. I do dig em either way though.

    19Fordy,
Yes. Dennis at Quality Restorations did the wheel and horn button.

    Ace-K,
Thanks! My friend was over checking out the steering wheel, when I was telling him a stock steering column was going back in the car in order to use the steering wheel. He looks over the wheel, both columns, and ends up building an adapter. I thought he was going to have problems with getting the horn to work, but he figured that out too. Changed out the aftermarket gauges and put back in a stock cluster at the same time..

  8. Looking forward to restoring my wheel too....It will be redone white.

The low priced "thrift" model 1949 Merc came with no lettering on the front fender trim and can also be used to replace the "lettered" trim on 49-51 Mercs. It's exactly the same configuration as the "lettered" trim, but is plain.

  12. Come on guys....this isn't a "Talk Shit" thread! It's a support group thread.

  13. Well if thats what it's called these days, then there is a lot of supporting that needs to be mentioned on these tilt columns.

  14. HAHAHA! There's many different incarnations of a Merc build on here. Some,I agree with ...some,not so much! I'm just glad they are being saved from the Streetrod/Billet guys...
    You're just TOO critical,Jeff,LOL....

True! Dug both your and Jeff's Mercs from the first time I saw them. Both have that perfect look and stance.

  18. Dont take it serious man,im just busting balls.Im sure there plenty of people who dont agree with all the things I have done to my car. It's all in fun.:D For the record, not that my opinion matters but I dig your merc a lot, very tasteful mild custom.

    Thanks Jeff,
You've pretty much hit a homerun with your Merc. Not that my opinion matters either.

  21. Hey guys. This just got dropped in my lap. Lee Lucero passed away not too long ago and his wife just passed also. His parents have a friend who located me and asked me to help sell his '51 Merc, that was chopped by Dick Dean. I'm going to the house to get some more of the details on the car, before I list in on here and on E-bay. It's been appraised at $65k,but they will be considering reasonable offers. Right now i'm the contact, but that mat change.
    Here's some pic's I got from Rik Hoving's site...

  24. It's a pretty amazing car! I've seen it in person and it'll knock your eyes out!!!
$65K would be a steal!!! Couldn't have it built for that...especially by Dean.

  25. I was a friend of Lee's widow Susan, very sad of her passing.I know a lot about that car.It was built by Dick & Keith Dean in the 90's.Paint was done by Tom Rodriguez 15 years ago and it still looks STUNNING.The car is one of the nicest 51's I have ever seen, inspired me a lot on my own car .... stock bumpers, stock trim & reworked stock grill. The chop on this car is sooooo perfect, one of the nicest chops on a 51 no doubt. The rear window is placed right where it is supposed to be its not shoved way up into the roof like a lot of 51's are.Lee Lucero was very inspired by the Harry Mohuff mercury, which was also built by Dick & Keith Dean.Lee loved the mohuff merc so much he wanted his car almost identical. These two cars often get mixed up because they are both so similar. The Mohuff merc was the merc in the movie Book of Love.
