OK, So I go the paint store. Guys I've used before and I tell them I want to use Dupont paint for my next project. Theyre a Dupont dealer. I've used NAPA Crossfire, PPG's OMNI and others years ago. The store tells me why not use Nason, It's the same as Dupont but cheaper. I'm wondering whats the difference? I used the Dupont Chroma once for a patch and really liked it. Is there a short quick answer? Thanks Jim
Nason may just be a lower quality paint made by DuPont.... Just as Omni is PPG's value product line.... Have ya considered House of Kolor or Valspar?
My problem is one that some of you may have. My wife is stuck on a pretty specific color and I may need to buy some pints before I get it right. I would like to deal locally so I can go back and forth. Will be going this afternoon to have them scan something and see how that works. Jim
Painters are the most neurotic people I know...if they shhot PPG they ONLy shoot PPG...same for Acme, Valspar, HOC, yada yada yada. I brought my Peterbilt hood to my buddy to paint and he really didn't want to shoot my Kirker paint that I provided. Ran outta Kirker so my fenders are sprayed with Kirker...the hood will be Nason (cuz i didn't want to spend the $$$ for PPG). I know painters get used to shooting with one product and they don't want to reshoot anything if something gets messed up... but on some things like farm eq., old trucks, etc. it really doesn't matter if the job ain't perfect. Heck I know a guy who won't shoot a "rat rod" with something like Hot Rod Flatz 'cuz they have never used it...pretty anal. May the bashing begin....

nason is the brand that carcoa, earl scheib and those such places used to use. its not asgood as the main lines by dupont or the others dupont aquired nason a few years back, but it is by no means a high end product. as with any line, a good painter can make it look good, but you will get better looks and durability from the high end paints skull
Everything has changed since the last full bare metal to finish paint so I'm starting all over again.
My edselero is Nason, many times they can make up the same color in either Nason or Dupont - like Skullhat said its the painter more than the product
A lot of it is probably the sharpness of the pigments. I know that Shopline has two different Blacks. The cheap one looks dirty next to the expensive option.
the main reason i try to stick to the same product is i always have thinners and hardners left over,so when i use the same brand.i don't have to by anything but the paint
I'll spray whatever the guy paying to paint will buy me.... Whether it's PPG, Omni, Hot Rod Flatz, Forrest Paints or Latex..... I even mix and match my thinners....oh my.....
laquer thinners,. or urethane reducers are pretty much interchangeble between brands, but systems that use a stabilizer really shouldnt be mixed. i have chucked thinner in chroma base and sherwin williams in a pinch for a cheap reapair, but wouldnt on an expensive or regular job skull
The way they reduce the cost of certain mat'ls is to remove the UV fighting ingredients. They're the most expensive element in paint. I base what I use on longevity and intended use, on color availability, and most important is past performance. I pretty much will not shoot DuPont. There was a basecoat issue several years ago where it would just lift and craze with no warning or change in process. At 1st the problem was denied but I did finally hear the truth. I still don't like it and it's usually a whole bunch more than PPG stuff. There was a drying problem with HOK UC annd UFC clears. They'd stay soft for months because of the compliance changes in the hardeners. I'm told tht might be fixed now, or soon at least. I hope so because I'd found the UC line to be as close the the beloved DAU82 Delglo clear from decades past. I'll bash krooser cuz he asked for it, and because I am a bit neurotic...YOU SUCK!!
Paints come, and paints go, but lacquer goes on forever. When I had my 1st car, it got waxed every weekend. It got washed and waxed regularly. Nothing beats polished lacquer...it's not like the car was going into Combat. I STILL take care of the finish on my cars...old habits die hard. If you don't take care of the finish, BC/CC...even enamel. My favorite is still acrylic lacquer...old habits die hard..
My personal experience with Nason and Omni is if your going to try and blend to an old finish the higher end finishes such as Chroma or DBC/DBU (one is discontinued) match better, but if your doing a complete repaint I'd use Nason and not look back. I recently switched to nason from Omni because that's what the shop can mix. I also really like the Nason/dupont clears. The shoot well and are cost effective. I figure no finish is going to be as good as the new finishes that get applied at the factories anymore. Those seem to hold up awesome.
X2... You have to be the painter from Hell to make BC/CC look as good as acrylic lacquer. I only know one guy in my area who can even come close. I just hate restorations (especially old GM cars) done with BC/CC... like putting whipped cream on a hotdog! </snip>
im one of those nuerotic painters chimin in , i have used nason, i mainly use dupont chroma base. for a overall job nason is fine, i can make it look great, for spotting a fender not so much, to repair a fender or hood etc.. use the chroma base it always matches better. just my 2c
I'm thinking Herb Alpert here and no CD will ever match that LP cover art. Look up "Whipped Cream and Other Delights" if you are to young to know what an LP is.
I like the nason line clear to practice with stuff. Its good stuff.(in my opinion, for ur buck.) But the higher quality clears I heard have a little less yellowing. And when ur using things like etch primers its good to use a good quality brand for protection. PCL looked like piss to me when a bunch of it dried in a cup.
ive used nason base coat it dont cover very well and it takes forever to dry its cheap ,and works ok for low end projects . there clear is ok but dulls out after a wile that also takes along time to dry ..
IMO Chroma is a superior product to Nason, but I use Nason all the time for trucks trailers, and jobs where cheap is important, but I ALWAYS clear it with DuPont. For stuff that I want to look good in a base clear I use a full line product, although I do really like the Nason urathane, it flows out pretty.
I like nason, I use it for engines, wheels, and all the little parts. If it's a cheap job I'll use it on the body, but for the most part I like chromabase better when it comes to complete paint jobs. This is sprayed with Nason
