This is all straight bondo, this is not the work of a pro shop, there's not even any fiberglass, mesh, or metal filled bondo, pros would have used that.
Here's the rocker done, I had some holes to weld up on the inner rocker but it was pretty solid back there, there's more rust in the wheel well flange but nothing major, it's mostly the outer skin that has suffered.
Man, you go out and buy an Elky and what do you do... start cutting it up! I need to meet the guy that did that bondo work. Boy have I got a project for him.
Man, That MOPAR wagon is fine! When yer ready to part with her my better half would dig that as a daily-driver!
That's what I thought of, when I saw the back of Nads rocker. Lotsa decent looking bondo boxes around here.
Lots of good ideas on this thread."Great Stuff" may get my car on the road a couple of years early.........
The only problem with great stuff ,The repair is to soft ,I used that stuff to glue my inner skin panels on my fiberglass 29 ,It does stick to everything .To fight the expansion problem ,Good old fashioned drywall screws ,
Welcome to MY world: The front portion of both rear quarters was made of "Great Stuff" and bondo....and this is what happens when it retains water and the effect on the metal around it. it's all up inside the rear....I think there's probably at least a metric ton of it. I think when I get around to doing the body panels, I'm just going to take a large ice cream scoop, sharpen the rim to Ninja blade sharpness, and scoop the sh*t out of it. It was made for your house....KEEP it there.
Here is a few I came across in the last few years. 46 Merc 1/4 panel, the rocker was part of an eavestrough held on with fiberglass and screws Back of 48 Mercury pickup cab. Someone welded in a patch and oil canned it real bad. Corner of a hood with "custom" air scoops. Picture doesnt really do it justice, it's well over an inch thick. The hood springs don't even hold the hood up anymore. This 56 Pontiac fender looked good until it was dipped. This is how it came back... and unfortunately the 1/4's and rear valence were the same.
Wow, I never looked at it THAT way. My Carryall is a perfect example. I gotta shoot some pictures of the quarters, they're embarassing. Look for the pics Tuesday night.
I found a 55 speaker grill for the dash behind my 1/4 panel slathered in bondo an inch thick today. So i've been cutting and welding all day.
I bought a 71 Cuda with a funky looking quarter panel. After I got it home I got to snooping and found that a previous owner tried to fix the dented quarter by GLUEING another quarter panel OVER the old dented quarter panel!!!! Not one single weld or screw, just bondo spread around the edges and pressed on! You can see the quarter panel "cap" on the ground next to the car. The real kick in the pants is that I could have metal finished the original quarter and skimmed it MUCH easier than what he had done!
Yeah idid a 50 shoebox that the fender corners, door corners ,rockers were mede of chicken wire newspapers sos pads and whatever else they could stuff in there! Some peple shouldnt be allowed to do body work at all!!!!!! I hate redoing peoples shitty work !
I grew up watching my Dad, fix shit like that. It's usually people who can't weld, doing damage like that. I was telling a so-called bodyman, about a '30 Coupe I seen at a body shop. It looked like it was dunked in Bondo. His response was.. How do you think they get 'em so straight?! I said something that should've made them think twice, and had to walk away. The bodyman worked there at Ford dealership with me. People make me glad, I can do my own metal finishing work.
Those look like the rockers that were in my 59! I hope your front fenders aren't like mine... 1" thick bondo over NEWSPAPER!
I guess I won't complain about the "minor" rust in my 52 hardtop. The rancher who owned it previously did take any interest in "fixing" it and its flaws weren't hidden under an inch of bondo.
anybody remember the pics/story of a guy who made a 40s or 50s Kaiser into a convertable with a fully functional cadillac top but literally carved the car out of filler then "restored" it with the most liberal use of poorly mixed filler ever
