he Troubadour played an important role in the careers of Elton John, Linda Ronstadt, Hoyt Axton, The Eagles, Bob Dylan, The Byrds, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison and other prominent and successful performers, who played performances there establishing their future fame. On August 25, 1970, Neil Diamond introduced Elton John, who performed his first show in the United States at the Troubadour. In 1974, John Lennon and his friend, Harry Nilsson, were ejected from the club for drunkenly heckling the Smothers Brothers. Randy Newman started out at the club and comics Cheech & Chong were discovered there. It's located in West Hollywood...
I posted a photo earlier in this thread about the c****s of Venice. Here is a gondola cruising the c****s in 1909. Yes, the c****s were modeled after the one's in Italy...
Ed, that ultra panorama shot is awesome! I fear this is a slippery slope, so I'll only take one step . . . but, talking about Whiskey-a-Go-Go and The Troubador, I just have to mention McCabe's Guitar Shop on Pico Blvd. in Santa Monica. Got on my radar screen with the 1976 LP "Live At McCabe's" by one of my all-time favorite flat pickers, Norman Blake. The list of legendary performers since they opened in 1969 (or since they started having performers in front of a live audience, anyway) is mind-blowingly long. The absolute best all-time musicians (a sampling): Finger-pick pickers: Chet Atkins, Merle Travis Flat pickers: Doc Watson, Norman Blake, Tony Rice (the best), David Bromberg, Ricky Skaggs Jazz guitar: Joe P***, Bill Frisell, Kenny Burrell, Barney Kessel, Larry Coryell (my personal favorite guitar player) All-around player extraordinnaire: Jimmy Bryant, Mark O'Connor, David Lindley Dobro: Tut Taylor, Jerry Douglas, Mike Auldridge Blues legend: Lightnin' Hopkins, John Lee ******, Willie Dixon, Lowell Fulson, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee Country picker extraordinnaire: Bernie Leadon, Vince Gill, Pete Anderson Jazz Giant: McCoy Tyner, Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, Freddie Hubbard Fiddle: V***er Clements, Byron Berline You get the idea . . . Tom Waits, Mike Bloomfield, Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks . . . it's like a right of p***age for great players, esp. guitar players.
