Started this project this week and I like the results so far.

The idea I drew out to see if I would like it:

I have no idea what the center bar is from (anyone know?) I bought it years ago at a swap meet knowing I would use it on some project.

Started to cut into a donor '49 grill and fit it:

cut center out and mock up the new center:

built the brackets to hold the bar and it is now free floating:

I have a lot work work ahead of me still. Flush mount the grill surround and create all new sheet metal for the lower pan. What cha think?

I dig it except for the bottom of the opening.
Have you thought about mimicking the shape the top of the opening on the bottom?

The floating part looks good, but you ruined a nice grill. I think a 52 buick upper lip would look good with that floating bar though!!

I have some plans for the bottom...

    Sweet thanks!

The grill was in bad shape, rusted. I saved it from the dumpster. Hence why I said donor grill. I had to fix some big dents and straighten out parts to get this far

I keep picturing a set of 56 Chevy parking lights stuck in there.

I would love to do that, was trying hard to locate a Merc suround to do that very look. I just decided to move forward with this concept. Heck I can alway change it later...

You don't need a Merc surround to do that look. Use a couple 3 in. mandrel 90* bends or similar size, to do it.

Looks like it came out purty nice.
    Good job.

The one thing I see (cause I've been staring at mine ) is the funky corners where the turn signals were.

Are you going to do something about those?

What he said. I hereby challenge you to make your own "merc surround". It doesn't have to be perfect, like you said you can always change it later!

Thanks, and yes I will be addressing the marker light sections, they need some attention to flow correctly. I will post progress pics as I get further along.

    ......

Thank you everyone for your kind words, means a lot to a guy bashing away in his small garage.

fixed the "open" area left by the turn signal pods.. small stuff but sure adds to the overall clean look.

Looks real good chopt49....also a 52-54 Willys car has a Merc like surround that would work well in a Chevy...But good luck finding that,huh?.....Keep up the good work!!
