First, they're NOT Astro Supremes, they're Astros. Second, explain to me why these would be prone to the lug hole issues any more than a factory steel wheel that used the same exact style lugnut? Make it good or I'll rip ya. LOL. Oh Hell, it's rhetorical. They had no such issues, I ***ure you. I ran em in the early 70's, as did many of my friends. With a steel wheel with no cushion for the lugs to loosed....guess what....the didn't. You heard of someone....oh Hell, I ain't explaining
Why start a thread asking which wheels people liked if you obviously knew which wheels you liked, and which wheels you were putting on?
Hummm i was just looking at those and had a thought, you can grab a cheap chrome blade type wheels and cut them into ovals and have the same thing for fraction of the cost, cool deal!
Heard of someone? I had three sets. All did the same on three different cars. They all went to the trash. Everyone I knew had the same problem.I had them early seventies ,short time till they seemed to dissapear. I never questioned why. Not wishing you bad luck,I was just trying to warn you.
I knew they were not Supremes ,just typed too fast. If I remember right ,this style was called Gyro`s ,the Supremes were the chrome 5 spokes ran on mostly lowriders. After I had the coming loose problems ,all things with the name Astro were in the same catagory and off limits.
The Astros are not the same as factory steel wheels even though they are made of steel and use the same nuts. The reason they are prone to lugs loosening are the Astros have a flat mounting surface over the drum. As the side forces twist at the wheel it works directly against the lugs where as the factory wheels have raised and lowered pressed hills and valleys to allow the wheel to flex around the mounting surfaces of the lugs. Think of a hammer. If you made a hammer completely of one piece of steel, handle and all ,grabbed it and struck a solid object, you will feel the impact in your hand but if you make the handle of wood or fibergl*** etc.By the time the impact and vibrations reach your hand they are greatly reduced.
I think the American 5 Spokes with the Hurst out back. I wouldn't mind seeing a little color like gold on the spokes and the rim shined up a bit more if you can just to give it a bit of flash. But then again, I miss my old wheels.... Up front I like the spokes too but would mind some halibrand kidney beans or small window wheels.
I understand and it makes sense. My experience however with this style lugnut is that it almost acts like a wedge of sorts. Kinda like peanut spark plugs that GM started using in the early 70's. You can install them lightly, but after a very short time, they're tight as Hell. I had similar wheels on my first car, never checked them, and had no issues. Neither did any of my friends. The wheels on my A now are prolly about 40 yrs old, and all the holes are in XLNT condition. I'll keep an eye on these and see what happens. One thing I noticed is I have 20 of the same lugnuts, and it appears the front lug holes have a different bevel than the rears, and therefore the lugnuts seem to sit at different depths front to rear. Possibly two different brands of the same style wheel
Could be all kinds of reasons and actually I am glad you didnt have problems.I always liked the looks of those wheels.I just had bad experiences with them.
