I went ahead and bought an Edelbrock and sold the TPI. Sold the fuel injection on Ebay and got enough to purchase the carb and a new radiator. Just gotta set the timing and I'll be on the road again!
Good, now pull the top cover and clean it out, there is a history of production crud. When you are done, set the float level. They don't stay set during shipping. Run a regulator, set at 4-1/2, they don't do well with over-pressure.
My experience with low vacuum and the AFB is not the same. I've had 4 motor's 6 or less on the vacuum gauge at idle. The AFB needs to be tuned for it just as a Holley would. Most overlook the metering rod springs when tuning the AFB which is crucial in the lower vacuum area. I'll agree that a Holley DP will typically out perform an AFB on the strip and the AFB is more streetable and MPG friendly. One could always step up to the "compe***ion series" AFB and dual feed it as well, they are more of a strip condender if tuned well.
I will also chime in on the Edelbrock, since you bought one. Go to their website and download their guide for needles and seats for your al***ude and stuff to set up your carb. If you don't set it up the way they want it, it might run ok but you will not get the full potential out of it. You might not notice it if you don't fix it, but you definitely will notice the difference when it is set up right. I am a Holley man, but I have set up enough of these Edelbrocks for friends that I know them well enough. Easy to set up if you can read directions and follow them. I just know Holleys and I like how they work. My preference.
