IN the book How to build altered wheelbase cars by Steve Magnante. He references some fiberglass seats that in the picture look just like those in the 65 comet that are available today. APPLETREE AUTOMOTIVE p/n 7250.

I had heard that Rick Kirk out of Oklahoma was making a back seat insert repop.

And on E Bay there is a guy making the fiberglass insert for the dash in the 65 that covers up the glove box.Its a plastic piece thats molded off an original piece. He also has the radio delete plates for both the 64 and 65.

For those who cant get enough of cool comet stuff.

  3. Not an old drag racer but here's another picture of my 65 I'm finally hauling to Oregon after storing in Michigan since 1972. I pull it out of storage twice a year to wash it off & push it back in the barn. Finally "sold the farm" so the car needs to be moved. I've got a few FE's in the works.

The picture/video of the 65 Cyclone & Phil's race reminded me of how much I miss the Comet. Bought it new in '65 in Rochester Mi.

65COMET: That was some good WHEELS UP action !!! I run with a group of stick shift guy United Manual Transmission Racers (U.M.T.R.) hear in Ohio (all sticks all the time) they would love your car... I run a Jerico/McLeod setup too...

  10. 65Comet >>> Roy: so I am lame & didn't search about you powerplant. So if not already posted remind-me Which mill?

I've got probably 10+ fe's but unfortunantly no HR's or SOHC's but the best I can do is a 428 or a 445 "Prison break" in the works. How about some small chamber big port EDC heads for big flow & good quench?

The 428 is going in my 31A roadster probably 2400# 4spd 4.11 gears. Not sure of the induction system but most likely it will be a Latham with 6 94's. (mearly for the look.)

I'm an FE maniac so all FE stuff is like eye candy.

Movin/on;my Comet runs a bored and stroked 289 out to 352" which is .060 over bore by 3.40" stroke.Ported Edelbrock aluminum heads,13.8 to 1 KB pistons,Eagle rods and crank,Crane .672 solid roller,Victor jr intake,750HP Holley,Mallory ignition.I run an aluminum flywheel,Mcleod Soft-lok clutch and a Jerico 4-speed,5.67 gears in a complete Mark Williams 9" with 35 spline axles.I run Phoenix 29.5X15X11.5W slicks,Comet weighs 2985 without me in it.That 428 with a Latham in your A will be a killer combo! Three pedal cars are the BEST!!!! ROY.

Six Gun; what first gear do you run? I have a 2.93 first in mine with a 5.67 rear gear.Still trying to get my timing of gear changes up to speed as I ran a 2.78 first Toploader forever with a 5.43 gear.I have an honorary membership into the British Columbia Super Shifters which sounds alot like your group.I met a guy last night at Irwindale[Calif] who runs a Jerico behind a blown bigblock,TOO KOOL!Three pedal cars forever!!! illflameit1;I don't think a factory rear seat blockoff would work with your altered wheelbase. It basically was a one piece fiberglass cover for the rear seat area.I made an aluminum cover to seal the trunk from the interior and covered the seat riser area with plywood and carpet. How is your Comet coming along? I finally got the locker on the 4:11 gears in and may try to run at Gulfport this wednesday. I ran 12.14 with the 4.57 locker over running my motors rpm range and 12.44 with 4;11 gears spinning one wheel through first gear last fall I hope it will make the 12.14 with the locker in it.

Judd;are you still using the T-5? If so have you solved the issues you were having? It sure would be great if we could find a location mid-country and get a bunch of Comets together!!!! ROY.

ROY, thanks you answered my question. i planned on going with metal too to sep. the truck from the cockpit, and didnt know if that glass would be right in an altered. so i just threw it out there for a pic.

man sounds like your combination is working better and better everytime you tweek it, good luck!

Armageddon is coming along great the full frame is in and i have started tacking the cage in it also. i spent a ton of cash on the 460 motor, with the 496 p.a.w. stroker kit and the hemi crank and rods.

i am running a full reverse valve body g.m. 400 turbo automatic with a 4000 stall, i wanted to go stick but dont think its a good idea to try to shift during full track wheelies. haha.

the ford 9 inch just got back from my buddies who shortened it to 46" backing plate to backing plate. 457 detroit locker, and i have a speedway front gasser kit for the front axle, i also have a econoline setup, if the speedway axle doesnt look like it can handle the abuse. also picked up the mopar springs and comp engineering slider kit for the leafs.

lots of welding to do but hope to be a roller by early may, so i can start back on the body and interior. enough yakking heres a few pics., george

I run a 29.5 by 10.5 stiff wall slick made a big differents in my 60'...

George;WOW,you really are building a full-on tube chassis,it looks plenty strong.A good friend switched from a C-6 to a TH400 and picked up a couple tenths with no other changes, plus it seems more reliable. The silver 65 Comet that has been posted on here runs a Speedway front end and has not shown any issues in 3 years of racing. The Econoline is a strong axle but will need to be narrowed.Your 64 will be AWSOME and one of a kind!! Keep us posted! ROY.

SIX GUN;I would have preferred a 3-something first, but got a GREAT deal on my Jerico.I love the way they shift and agree they make you feel like a better gear banger! I had a guy come up to me last Thursday who swore I must have a Lenco in my car, surprise!! ROY

A bit off topic being a 61' but thought you'd find this interesting...appeared in Wichita Kansas paper on 4/12/2010

Mennonite Relief Sale will offer '61 Mercury Comet

    BY BECCY TANNER

    The Wichita Eagle

Antique vehicles, quilts, plants and food are some of the hundreds of items expected to be sold Friday and Saturday during the 42nd annual Kansas Mennonite Relief Sale.
Proceeds from the fundraiser go to the Mennonite Central Committee, a world-relief organization operating in 60 countries.

It is one of the largest sales of its kind in the United States and Canada, and traditionally attracts as many as 22,000 visitors and raises between $300,000 and $500,000, said Jerry Toews, one of the board members of the Mennonite Central Committee.

Among the featured items for sale this year is a 1961 Mercury Comet with only 50,000 miles.

It was donated by a Hillsboro woman whose family wishes to remain anonymous.
The car was kept in a garage the entire time she owned it. It has its original seat covers, dash instruments, jack and spare tire, Toews said.

"It is very rare that one finds a 50-year-old vehicle in this condition with all its original equipment," said Toews, who got the car running after it had sat idle for 15 years.

It needed a new battery, a gas tank cleaning and carburetor overhaul, he said.
"It started right up and was purring like a kitten," he said. "I drove it out and, well, the brakes stuck," he said. "So, I brought it back home, took all the wheels off and rebuilt the brake cylinders. And now, it purrs like a kitten and I can stop it."
The relief sale also will offer a fully restored 1945 John Deere Model H tractor and a 1929 Model A Ford coupe with rumble seat.

For 42 years, more than 70 Mennonite, Brethren in Christ and Amish congregations in Kansas have donated their gifts and services for the sale.

Along with baked foods, plants, cheeses, hams and sausages, it offers more than 250 handmade quilts, comforters, wall hangings and all types of crafts.

This year it also will include a children's auction. Children, accompanied by an adult, can bid on items such as games, dolls and toys. Organizers say the auction is meant to teach people that no matter their age, all can play a roll in helping people in need.

Hmmn. The baked goods sound ,um,real good!:D
Heres another shot of the 'Rocket, now being put through its final fitment and interior work. Hard to tell the rear wheelhouse opening has been opened up so the axle centerline is now about 4 1/2- 5 inches more forward. It sound like my engine builder is going to have my little unstroked high compression 289 dyno'd, which I am really looking forward to!!! I'm make sure I video it. The average person will never have any idea how much work we put into these cars, and most likely will never appreciate them like we do either!! With each week, a few steps closer:
