Brian, thanks for the bonus video.

That first bad crash was Bill Horstmeyer at Springfield.

IMCA racer Bill Horstmeyer bought the former Gabriel Shocker champ car to break into USAC. Spingfield 1964 was his first (and last) start, which, obviously, didn't end well.

    Oh no,

    That is terrible news.

My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

  7. No disrespect intended on anything I put in there. The idea was to point out there is a marked difference between todays Indy 500 driver and the kind that BUILT this sport into what we love.

Like soldiers, some gave a whole lot and some gave all. But then, that attitude is what it took to make it what it was.

  8. RIP Ken Coles.

I grew up on artistry like yours, and loved all of it. I'm 42, and many of us studied your work.

<!-- message -->well here`s my first try at putting a post together. Bear with me i`ll make plenty of errors i bet. I am in the process of bringing the old "C rown seven" back to life for one of the original owners out of conn. I will try to keep posting as i go along and hope that many of you are interested in following it`s progress. As far as the history i will have the car owner stop bye on here and provide all the information he has. The owner of this car is Stanley "Skip" Matczak out of Somers Ct. also the owner of Seals-it racing products. Just before the snow had started we went down to ct. and picked up what we had of the car. After getting it home and into the shop we began to take inventory of what we had and what we needed. This is going to be alot of fun....that it quite evident! I`ll start with a few pics as we got it here and will try to give a rundown every week if possible. If you have any questions......fire away later jim

Hey guys, I need help identifying the cars or track in these photos I found in an antique store in Warm Springs, GA about ten years ago. They have Gilmore Red Lions on the cars but the flamed paint scheme resembles the Southern Star car shown on this page of the thread

    http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=3104547&highlight=smith+jiggler#post3104547

The pics in question are attached. The entire crew in in matching uniform. Must have been a big outfit for the day??

PS: These pics have not been circulated since I've owned them. You're the first to see them in ?? years! :D

    Scott,
The car on the left in both pictures ended up as the Southern Star. It was built by Roy Ritcher [Bell helmet] in 38. Frankie Luptow bought the car new and Eddie Zulicki drove it. It was the L-8. During the winter Eddie copyied the car, made it the Z-8 and Frankie Luptow drove it. Eddie told me Frankie never drove the L-8 [which became the Southern Star]. The Z-8 was bought by Carl Ott of Louisville, Ky. Funny how both cars were sold about the same time and ended up in Louisville. That is not a Lion on the cars but a Panther. Frankie later had a coupleof famous cars he called the Black Pnathers. I never have been able to find the Southern Star but the Z-8 is still running some vintage races. It is a Silver[or Gray] number 8, A guy in Ohio owns it. About the only difference is in the grills as Zuluckie copyed the L-8 as close as he could. They both ran 4-Port Rileys.

Josh, that is a professional video. And the car looked great - but what else would we expect? Glad your dad had some fun.

Like Wally Parks told me once when we were talking about racing history, "If we don't remember where we've been, we can't be sure where we're going."

What part of Florida are you in Jim? I understand from reading your previous posts in this thread that your dad was involved with the Star at some point, is that correct?

    sm66p-
Thanks for all the IMCA pics. The last pic in #10564 appears to be Colo. St. Fairgrounds- Pueblo, but can't identify the car. Ain't nobody getting through that "fence" though
