I started racing in 1949 and we were wearing white then. Mostly white coveralls. Really looked snazzy against the dirt tracks.

 

Plus USAC fined you if you didn't wear white pants. Still have my Bakers Whites. Never fit into them again.

They were mandatory in IMCA also.

 

Rick Vunerable, he and my dad raced together for Hank W. Scott in cars 17 and 117. My dad worked for hank and was the primary driver, normally in car 17 but drove 117 sometimes. Haven't seen any pictures of him here and was hoping to, since I don't have any.

 

I crewed a dirt car for several seasons wearing white Levis when I was young. Don't know how my mother kept them white or why she put up with me wearing them. Still have my old white painters shirt with the patches on it.

 

I don't know where you guys keep finding this stuff, but I can't stop looking at this thread

 

the way pit Whites were explained to me ion my youth was that the lighting in the pits was seldom as good as on the track,and most of the tracks raced at night the white pants made it easier for the drivers to see and avoid the crews.
